Hi Lynne, I suspect the surname change on the military papers occurred because his birth certificate was produced for some reason. Perhaps they preferred that the records were made in his registered surname as opposed to the one he used in every day life. Hopefully, Frank's birth certificate could reveal the truth behind the surname. It's possible that Mary is a Mary Buskey who was at least honest enough to register the children's births under her own name (whether it be a maiden or previous married name) whilst not being married to George Walker. I'd be interested to find out what the papers say :o) Regards, Sally ---------------------------------------- > Date: Mon, 14 Nov 2011 11:16:26 -0500 > From: lklein@mindspring.com > To: eng-lan-bolton@rootsweb.com; lancsgen@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [LAN] Frank BUSKEY et al. > > > Hi Sally > Brilliant! > Many, many thanks for all of the BUSKEY info. Hi Sally Brilliant! Many, many thanks for all of the BUSKEY info. I needed another pair of eyes to find that family. They have been sitting on the back burner for a long while now, ever since we dug up Frank's military info at Kew. Looks like Frank and his sister were illegitimate and Frank adopted the WALKER surname. I wonder what caused him to change his surname back to BUSKEY when he re-enlisted. His mother is listed as BUSKEY on Frank's military papers and, as you pointed out, on the 1911 census. Looks like Mary was never married to George WALKER. Off to search for birth details. Hello Mark, Hill Farm is still listed on modern maps. The nearest address I can pinpoint it to is Riding Gate, Bradshaw, which you should be able to find online. Riding Gate is off Tottington Road to the north, whilst the farm is situated to the south of Tottington Road. Hope this helps. Can I remind people again that they might be able to find a photograph of their ancestor's war grave on the War Grave Photographic Project's website. I often find when I see someone asking about ancestor lost in WWI or WWII that they were unaware that they could get a picture. http://www.twgpp.org/ The main Commonwealth countries have their own projects though graves in the UK should be on the WGPP site. Also if they have an ancestor lost in WWI or WWII who is not on the CWGC Debt of Honour then they can submit the name for consideration using the In >From the Cold website. http://www.infromthecold.org/index.asp Also Ancestry UK have free access to their military records for a couple of days, there was a Tweet about it but can't find on their website. Hi all I am researching background on my ORMROD relatives from Harwood and am related to a number of the Oliver Ormrods who lived on HILL FARM, Harwood.(see auction reference below) I am trying to track down, map-wise, where the farm would have been. I sense that a number of you on this list live in the Bolton region. (I’m in Canada.) I know that local knowledge counts for a lot. Can anyone tell me: - Where Hill Farm was located? Is it still farmland? - The old reference to the auction of Hill Farm say it was on the Affetside Road. I can’t find a modern reference to this road. -I know Bradshaw and Harwood are close by each other, and Affetside is to the north. On modern satellite pics there’s a lot of green space – farms? Hills? Is this where a farm such as this might have been located? Also, a reference I found in an online family tree has this unsourced info: > Hill Farm, Harwood, Lancs: > Oliver Ormrod inherited the farm on his marriage to Elizabeth Hill. The > freehold of the farm was purchased in the mid 1700s by Sir Ashton Lever > of Alkington, with Oliver Ormrod remaining as the tenant. Does anyone know if this might be correct? (Seems odd to me that this Oliver Ormrod would have owned the land, rather than renting. I get the impression that his first wife ELIZA HILL came from less affluence than his second wife, ALICE HE(a)TON who was noted for having more money & I would think the farm was named for its geography rather than the Hill family?) Many thanks Mark Hall AUCTION SALE REFERENCE: ORMROD, in Barton's Historical Gleanings 3rd Series, 1883 An Old Family Estate (written by J.D. Greenhalgh) page 174:- The estate put up for auction sale at the house of Mr. Gardner, the Boar's Head Inn, Bolton, July, 1786, is known as the Hill Farm, overlooking premises used to be held as the Britannia public-house, on the Affetside Road, in the township of Harwood. One of the name and family line still resides there, in the person of the venerable and much-respected Mr. Thomas Ormrod, parent of Messrs. Peter and J. Ormrod, brickmakers and stone dealers, 24, Walker Fold, Derby-street, Bolton. Oliver Ormrod, who held it in tenancy, 1786, was great grandfather to the present tenant. This Oliver Ormrod succeeded his father, Oliver Ormrod, the next tenant being the present occupant's father (Oliver Ormrod), and it is remarkable to state that this particular farm has had one of the name of Ormrod as occupier for near 300 years, the Christian name (Oliver) prevailing. James Ormrod, Esq., who died in 1825, father of the late Peter Ormrod, Esq., and James Ormrod, Esq., of Halliwell Lodge, near Bolt on, purchased the estate in the year 1814 or 1815, and it now belongs to Oliver Ormrod, Esq., son of the latter.
