    1. [ENG-LAN-BOLTON] Morris & Bulmer
    2. Ian
    3. Hi, I was wondering if anyone can help me push down 2 walls? In Aug 1886 John Morris married Sophia Bulmer in Bolton but I cannot get any further back than this. Their marriage certificate shows John’s father as William Morris, a painter, and I believe his mother’s name was Nancy (from census) but I don’t know her maiden name. There were way too many Morris’s around for me to locate the right one. The certificate gives no information on Sophia’s father and I so far have been unable to locate her on any census prior to 1891 when she was married to John. Any information on either family would be most welcome. Thanks Ian

    3. I would invite my gt gt gt grandfather Joseph NUTTALL who fought in the Peninsular Wars 1808-14. I would ask him who the other Joseph NUTTALL was in the same 6th Foot Regiment at the same time! His first child Ellen was born in France so when did his wife join him and for how long. Did he travel with his regiment to Niagara to fight the Americans after being wounded in The Pyrenees or did he stay in France through injuries. Finally I would ask him why he was listed as a widower in 1851 when his wife Jane was in Boltron with their son Joseph! Question questions..... Chris in snowy Lancashire.

    2. Valerie lirakis
    3. I would invite my g.uncle, Samuel Ashworth, whose place and manner of death has long been a mystery. Rumour has it that he died somewhere in Ireland in 1883, as a result of a pub brawl over someone's pet dog. I do recall my father telling me that he had an uncle who was stabbed to death in 1922 by a member of the IRA as he was boarding the ferry at Holyhead with the Black and Tans. I have never been able to find anything to corroborate this story, nor any uncle who would have been of the right age, and wonder if these two tales have become garbled over time. I would ask him how he came to be teaching in Ireland (as the story goes), when according to the 1881 census he was a cotton piecer in Bolton! I suppose tripe and Lancashire hotpot would be an appropriate dish! 3. I'd invite SARAH ANN BARROW (b. 1869 Longcauseway, Farnworth; d. 1901 Bentinck Street, Moses Gate) my great grandmother. Was my great grandad really James Mitchell? Why did you not get married to him when you were both young and single? Was he the father of your other two children as well? Are there any photos of you anywhere? Those... and a thousand other questions which keep me going in family history. I have no idea where he came from though I think he was from Bolton. I would love to know more about him as my earliest ancestor. Alternatively, Peter BRISCOE was my Great Great Grandfather. He was born in Bolton and married Mary DALEY in 1829. He "cut his own throat in a temporary fit of insanity" in 1848 but I have no idea why. He had eleven children including one newly born that year. 1. [ENG-LAN-BOLTON] Hugh Duffy MCBURNIE - December Holiday Theme
    2. Marian Young
    3. I would invite my husband's great-grandfather Hugh Duffy McBURNIE and his "de-facto" wife Mary Jane REA (no marriage ever found) to ask him about a few of the stories that have been passed down through the generations. Were they ever married? Did he really flee from Ireland to Liverpool in the 1870's and change his name to escape capture? His "wife" Mary Jane was in Walton Jail, Liverpool, in 1881 with their two-month old son Charles - just what crime had she committed? And what made them move to Halliwell from Liverpool? Merry Christmas Marian Canberra

    1. [ENG-LAN-BOLTON] December Holiday Theme - Robert WALLWORK
    2. Keith Wallwork
    3. It is good of you to join us Robert as there are many questions I would like to ask you. The only definate thing I know abour you, was your marriage to Jane WYLDE in St Peters Bolton on the12th Sep 1824 and the fact that a daughter Ann was baptised in the same church on the26th Mar 1826. My ggrandfather John WALLWORK always maintained that he was born in Bolton in 1820 and you are the father. Is this correct or did Jane have a child by another party. I suspect, well its the only relevant baptism that I can find that John's baptism is at St Saviors Ringley on the 19th Nov 1820 with mother Jenny WILDE and no father given. Jenny's residence was stated as Outwood which I know is near Bolton. If you are the father why did you wait four years to marry Jane? If John is not your child do you know who the father was? When and where were you born and who were your parents? Jane remarried in 1834 in Manchester so you must have died before then- I cannot find your death so perhaps you can tell me what happened? John followed your occupation and eventually became a journeyman papermaker, living most of his life at various mills in Derbyshire. His first marriage was childless and he remarried after his wife's death. The second marriage had three children. Jane remarried after your death a Matthew RYON at Manchester cathedral on the 6th Apr 1834. They had three children. Matthew was also a papermaker so were you friends before your death. I cannot tell you what happened to Ann, the 1841 Census has a probable listing for her living on her own in Harperney near Manchester. Matthew and Jane lived there for a while before moving to Derbyshire Christmas wishes to you all Keith in Oz

    3. Henry HARGREAVES born ca 1800 Bolton father John Who was your mum? Why did you put your family onto the path of crime, taking your wife Jane (CROMPTON) and sons John, Howarth and Holden with you to Van Dieman's Land in 1848? Luckily Howarth went onto the straight and narrow and produced some fine children, grandchildren, g/grandchildren (my husband). Come to Christmas dinner in Brisbane Australia where the temperature is likely to be about 30° c. We will have seafood, salads, champagne and beer!! I would invite my GreatGreatGreatGrandfather Daniel BENTLEY who I have been chasing for years. I have him from birth up until his death and on every census in between that period except for the 1881 I would ask him where he had been for that particular census and why.. For the menu I would serve him a typical Aussie theme making sure that one of the courses would be "shrimps on the barbie" Perle Brooking. Younghusband South AUstralia.

    2. Stuart Phethean
    3. My great-grandfather William PHETHEAN 1853-1907. His body was found on second August 1907 in the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Rufford, Lancs. Cause of Death: ³Found drowned but jury had not sufficient evidence to show how he came to be in the water². Certificate received from Harold Parker, Deputy Coroner for Lancashire. Inquest held 3 August 1907. He was at some time, cotton mill manager (John Phethean & Co, Moses Gate), and later publican/manager of the Church Hotel in Bolton - but his probate document states he was an "insurance agent". What events befell him and what caused him to die in such tragic circumstances miles away from home? I have a family photo taken in about 1887 and it looks like a typical Victorian middle class family. What can he tell me about the cotton industry - the good times and the hard times - and what were the economic or personal circumstances that influenced his life in such a dramatic way? This was a well-kept family secret - the event that was never mentioned by my father or by my grandfather - I only discovered the facts when I came across a copy of the Probate certificate last year. 3. For reasons which you will understand when reading post no surname has been given. I would invite LILY ***** Who is my father?, I bear no malice to you, but the rest of the family have shunned me for something I had no say in. It is not knowing of any health related info that has caused me problems, along with losing one part of my heritage. I think I can understand what went on in your life, & in a way dont blame you ! You gave me life, you left me far too early through death, but I still LOVE YOU. Jean.

    3. Would anyone know anything about Edmund Collinge? He was buried at St. Michael's and St. Bartholomew's Church of Great Lever, next to five of my Collinge relatives. My Collinge's relative's grave has fallen over and I wanted to have it put back, but no one could help me when I was over there The graves are right in front of the church. I thought Edmund might be a relation and I might be able to find something off his gravestone. Thanks for your consideration Donna Collinge Martens, Muskegon, Mi. DJMFLAG@aol.com

    1. [ENG-LAN-BOLTON] ELIZA MAYOR - December Holiday theme
    2. Linda Pauwels
    3. ELIZA GENT MAYOR, my great grandmother born 1865 in Chorley and died 1924 in Bolton. She was one of 12 children who had 4 children of her own. She & her husband ran the Millstone Pub in Anderton until he died at age 51, and she had to give up the pub which she had run for years while her husband raised and showed his Millstone dogs. She then had a shop on John Taylor Street in Bolton until her death. Question I would ask: Did the death of your 2 yr old daughter have anything to do with your moving from Aspull to Anderton? Was it really because you were a woman that they wouldn't renew your liquor license to run the pub after the death of your husband even though you'd been doing it for years? Was it a difficult adjustment going from the pub to running a shop in Bolton.
