Hi List, Could someone please give me a list of the cemeteries in Farnworth or tell me where I would find this information? Are any of these cemeteries on line to browse through? I do have a photo of a head stone at St John's cemetery, but that is the only one I know of. Thanks for any help. Gracie New Zealand
Hi Mary, Just wondering, out of interest, whether you have come across any KENYON connection with Hartlepool in Northeast England. I've been in touch for a number of years with a chap who now lives in Canada, but who originally came from Hartlepool. He seems to think his ancestors were from t'other side o' Pennines. Are you aware of any KENYON's who crossed to the other side, so to speak? Regards... Hello David I have no idea what became of any of them. Of course, the only part of all that lot called Kenyon were Thomas and his family. If your friend can throw any light on the matter I should be very pleased. I've come across a brick wall. Mary Pryce (born Knowles, Bolton)
Do you know of this man? My godfather was called Alan and, I believe, organist at St James, Breightmet, around 1942/3, where I was christened. He was a younger cousin of my father Colin Knowles, on his mother's side (she was Sarah Ellen Knowles, born Kenyon c1880, called Nellie). He may have been a son of Nellie's sister Jane Lee, mother of Zipporah (sometimes spelled Zepporah). Alan had twin children, Stephen and Elizabeth, b c 1950. I last saw him in 1954 and would like to trace his son and daughter and find out who were his parents. Mary Pryce (born Knowles)
Can you help? I want to trace the descendants of any of these people, who are the children of my great-grandmother Jane Kenyon. Jane had eleven children, nine of whom survived until at least 1911, when she made her Will (I have the original). There was only one surviving son, Thomas b Bolton c1860 m Martha ?. In 1901 there were 3 children living at home, Arthur C b Bolton c1881 (age 20), Bertha b Bolton c1884 age 17), Martha b Bolton c 1895 (age 6). The gap between Bertha & Martha suggests that Thomas could have married twice. Mary Ann b Bolton c1862 m Jones (I can't find her on the 1901 census so don't know if she had children), Martha b Bolton c1864 m Alfred Helsby, no children living at home in 1901 Alice b Bolton c1866 m 1. Isherwood (one son Ernest b c1887) 2. William Wood (one son Samuel b c1899) d before 1911 Susannah b Bolton c1868 m Cornelius Brooks, no children living at home in 1901 Elizabeth b Bolton c1871 m James Fielding, no children living at home in 1901 Jane (above) b Bolton c1873 m Thomas H Lee, one daughter Zepporah age 4 in 1901 Hannah b Bolton 1876 m James Norris d before 1911, 3 children living at home in 1901, Fred (later became the Olympic miler then emigrated to Australia), Samuel & George) Sarah Ellen b Bolton 1880 m Ben Knowles d c1941 one son Colin b Bolton 1910 Lettice b Bolton 1881 m ? Hi everyone, I'm very happy to tell you all that, as a result of last night's 'Looking Back' column in the B.E.N. one of the photos that J Winstanley took has been identified. It shows a family of four outside their house, Ref: 1R. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~boltongenealogy/photogallery_3.htm A gentleman rang to say that it was his father, aunt, and grandparents, named VALENTINE, and was taken circa 1905, which makes it the earliest photo to date. The gentleman in the photo is John Edward Valentine, quarry owner of Cox Green quarry, his son John (behind his mother), Anne Valentine his wife, and daughter Alice Maud. The quarry itself, though not visible on the photograph, is to the front and side of the house. Imagine my surprise when I realised that the house is only 20 minutes walk from where I live, on Cox Green Road, and I have passed it many times when walking to my mother's home. The house has changed quite a bit, as you will see from the photo I took this morning, which explains why I didn't recognise it. I should hasten to add that the posh car parked outside is NOT mine! Hello Barb, In 1881, these are the children with Patrick Comer and his wife Eliza in Lancashire. Thomas born about 1865 Bilston, Staffs William Comer born about 1868 Bilston, Staffs Eliza Comer born 1869 (My great grandmother) Bilston, Staffs Mary Jane Comer born about 1872 Bilston, Staffs Mark Comer born about 1878 Bilston, Staffs. John Henry Comer born about 1880 Bilston, Staffs. Sarah Comer (who was born after the Census in 1881, Lancashire. In 1901, Patrick (Patsy) is living with his children William, John and Sarah. His wife Eliza died in 1887 and is buried at Farnworth Cemetery. I sent for the grave deeds, hoping that Patrick was buried with her, but she was on her own. I have accounted for all the children in 1901 and they were all still in the Walkden/Farnworth area apart from Thomas. I can't find him in 1891 or 1901, nor can I find a marriage or death record. Perhaps he went to live abroad. I can't think why my Patrick would have moved away from all his family, apart from going to visit Thomas abroad or to go to Ireland. I can't find a death for him on the GRO Index anywhere in the country after 1901. As I mentioned before, I did find a burial for a Patrick Comer in Farnworth Cemetery. He was about the same age as my Patrick and born in Ireland. He lived quite near to my Patrick in 1901, but I have accounted for him and he is not mine. Kind regards, Anne in Bolton. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Barb Baker" <bbaker48@sympatico.ca> To: <ENG-LAN-BOLTON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, April 06, 2006 2:29 PM Subject: [ENG-LAN-BOLTON] COMER > Hello Anne: > > Can you tell me the name of his wife and/or children ? Hello Anne. Yes, my cousin Brian sent me the info...his grandfather Richard and my grandmother Emma were brother and sister..I met Brian on here through a geney site...isn't this internet just so wonderful. Seems like his grandfather decided not to leave England..Actually I'm not sure it isn't his great grandfather...have to look that up.. Anyway..he sent me the info on Frederick being here in the US when Emma and and here brother Hugh came on the ship..other sisters came at a different time. He also sent me a copy of that census...not sure how we would prove it is our Frederick? The wife didn't die until 1911 and he is calling himself a widow..well, guess he could if he wanted to..Plus his birthday is 7 Oct 1842...so it does have the Oct in it...and the census taker could have made a mistake transposing the dates... Unfortunately everyone is long gone here that would know of him. I asked my sisters who are older than I am, and they never remember Grandma Barnes mentioning her father...in fact they had no idea he was in this country until I showed them the ships manifest that Brian sent me.. I wonder how I could find out more about this one in California? hummmmmm.. .now i am curious. Thanks again...Jean in Rhode Island, USA . -------Original Message------- From: pneanne Date: 04/06/06 16:49:18 To: ENG-LAN-BOLTON-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [ENG-LAN-BOLTON] FREDERICK TOMKINSON Hello Jean, Do you have this information from the 1900 American Census. Hi Anne...I have an ancestor like that...my Gr Grandfather, Frederick Tomkinson, was born 7 Oct 1842 in Birmingham, Warwickshire and married Mary Anne Naylor ofPrescott, Lancashire. My grandmother was born in Bolton 12 Oct 1874....After 1886 Frederick left everyone there in Bolton, including children and wife, and came here to the US.His wife Mary Anne died 1911 in the Workhouse Hospital . In 1894, Emma, my grandmother, immigrated to the US with her little brother to meet up with her father Frederick..and that is the last we hear of him. Emma met him in Boston, but nothing further is found until she is in RI and married to my grandfather. Her father Frederick was an Insurance Agent, both in England and here in the US..but he has vanished forever I guess.. not to be found...or still alive and 150 years old..LOL..
