Having been fairly new to this list, I've started looking through your archives for our family names associated with Bolton. My husband's grandmother was ADA BODDY, who came from a Bury family, originally from Norfolk around 1860. I see that in 2003/4 there's lots of emails to this list from a Tony Boddy of Bolton who talks about an American cousin in Saudi who knows lots about them. Does anyone know where Tony's disappeared to and does anyone else out there have BODDY links? Barbara

Hello again Anne, I came up a marriage between Emma Bain & George Frankland in 1899. Perhaps they were friends of the Counsells and when Mary Ellen died, the family offered their grave for her burial? Thanks again for looking. Best wishes Joan

Hello Anne, Thank you for looking for Mary Ellen. I found a birth for Mary Ellen D BAIN, Dec 1892, Dec Qtr. in Bolton on FreeBMD. I have no other information on her other than the fact that she was interned in a grave with the Counsell family in 1903. Regards Joan
Hi Roy, Have you looked at the IGI? Hi Valerie, It is my pleasure to share the information. You volunteers and the rest of the listers are very helpful, so share and share alike! Funnily enough, I wondered if any of the listers might be present so I had a quick look at the sign-in sheet but couldn't recognise any names. Will be going again in the not too distant future so we might bump into each other. My next step is to try and get beyond Joseph Horrobin born 1793 in Manchester. He married Betty Warburton on 4th Sept 1815 at St Peter's Church, Bolton. If anyone out there can help with suggestions as to the next step I should take, I would be extremely grateful. regards Roy
Hi Roy, Thanks very much for sending all this information to the list. It sounds as though you had a busy day, and fortunately, despite not being able to get a reader straight away at the archives, you were able to make the most of your visit. By coincidence I, too, was at the archives that day, and had I known you were there I would certainly have introduced myself. Hope you found all the information you wanted. Hi Roy, I'm deeply disappointed to see that all that effort hasn't turned up any clues to any of my lot, but just to show that I won't hold a grudge here are a pair of Horrobin twins that you didn't mention, just in case you're not aware of them: 18 April 1824 Bapt. Hi All, With regard to the differing policies of allocation of readers at Bolton Archives; I did attend there on 4th April and was immediately told that I couldn't have a reader for the 3 hours that I was promised by email (Josh). I was told only an hour at a time and that I would have to rebook each hour. Fortunately I didn't need a reader immediately but later was able to get one without any trouble. This system appeared to work for all visitors with hardly anyone having to wait too long. I found the staff very helpful and found what I set out to verify. I took time at both Wigan History shop and Bolton Archives to peruse Parish Registers and whilst there is a lot of information I am posting it here for anyone out there who may be researching Horrobins from Bolton. I have also added details from grave-stones. Bolton Horrobins - Grave Headstones St Peter's Parish Church, Bolton The grounds around St Peter's Parish Church Bolton have been cleared of most of the grave headstones and monuments; only a few large memorial graves survive in the name of prominent Boltonians such as Pilkington and Crompton. All other headstones have either been placed around the graveyard propped against the cemetery wall or as paving stones in the pathways and drip-gully against the church wall. Paying particular attention to the Horrobin name I found the following all damaged headstones:- 1.. "Here resteth the body of ALICE daughter of WILLIAM HORROBIN of Little Bolton who departed this life the - - - Day of May 1752 ? (date virtually unreadable due to damage) in the 9th year of her age" 2.. "JOHN HORROBIN of Bolton Le Moor was here interred the 15 day of July 1699" "WILLIAM HORROBIN died the 28th June 1712" 3.. "E. H. 166 - " ? (piece broken off) "Here resteth the body of DOROTHY the wife of WILLIAM HORROBIN of Bolton" 4.. "Here rests the body of RICHARD the son of JOHN & MARTHA HORROBIN of Gt Bolton he departed this life the 8th ? (damaged) day of April 1780 ? (damaged) in the 6th year of his age". There is then several lines of verse most of which is unreadable, then .. "also JOHN son of JOHN & MARTHA HORROBIN who died May 11th 1788 in the 16th year of his age". Then more lines of verse. St James' Church, Breightmet, Bolton The older section of St James' churchyard has been extensively vandalised with many headstones face down and many others missing. A fairly detailed search found the following:- 1.. "WILLIAM HENRY HORROBIN the beloved husband of LUISA HORROBIN who died April 11th 1900 aged 36 years. Also LUISA wife of the above who died June 11th 1931 aged 70 years. 2.. "To the the memory of our dear sister EMILY HORROBIN who died October 2nd 1925 in her 63rd year. Also Enoch dearly loved husband of LEAH ALICE HOWARTH and brother in law of the above who died December 22nd 1946 aged 80 years. LEAH ALICE HOWARTH who died May 6th 1949 aged 78 years. Also NELLIE beloved wife of THOMAS H HOWARTH who died Jan 31st 1967 aged 65 years" 3.. "In memory of MARY the wife of THOMAS HORROBIN who departed this life January 15th 1873 aged 38 years. Also FRANCIS THOMAS FARNWORTH grandson of the above who died January 29th 1893 aged 16 months. Also JAMES OPENSHAW great grandson of the above who died Dec 2nd 1922 aged 9 months" 4.. "Sacred to the memory of THOMAS HORROBIN of Breightmet who departed this life April 16th 1870 aged 83 years. Also ANN wife of the above who died Sept 15th 1872 aged 66 years. SARAH daughter of THOMAS and JANE HORROBIN born Sept 12th 1831 died January 23rd 1866. JOHN THOMAS son of THOMAS and JANE HORROBIN and grandson of the above who died Feb 2nd 1886 in his 18th year. Also the above named THOMAS the beloved husband of JANE HORROBIN died August 8th 1904" 5.. In memory of HENRIETTA daughter of WILLIAM HORROBIN and ELIZABETH SLATER of Haulgh died Oct 21st 1876 aged 6 months. WILLIAM HORROBIN SLATER who died on the 13th December 1883 aged 34 years. Also LEAH daughter of the above who died Oct 22nd 1892 aged 18 years. Also WILLIAM beloved son of the above who died May 8th 1908 in his 29th year. Also ELIZABETH wife of the above who died May 17th 1913 aged 68 years. Also VICTORIA ADELAIDE FOGG beloved daughter of the above who died Jan 12th 1973 aged 91 years" Marriages - Bolton Parish Registers 1750 - 1826 A cursory search of transcripts of Bolton Parish Registers revealed the following marriage entries of HORROBIN or variations:- James Horrobin, weaver & Ann Yates 1st Jul 1755 Thomas Parkinson, weaver & Ann Horrobin 22nd May 1756 John Horrobin, weaver & Mary Tong 14th Oct 1756 William Horrobin & Ann Cartwright 6th Jul 1757 John Horrobin, cooper & Martha Crompton 18th Feb 1760 James Horrobin, weaver & Betty Barlow 21st Sep 1760 James Lever, weaver & Mary Horrobin 31st Sep 1761 John Stauton & Hannah Horrobin 21st Oct 1765 Abraham Fitton, weaver & Mary Horrobin 26th Nov 1765 Ralph Holme, weaver & Betty Horrobin 25th Mar 1772 James Horrobin, collier & Ann Oldham 24th May 1772 William Horrobin, groser (sic) & Ann Whittle 18th Nov 1772 James Horrobin, weaver & Alice Openshaw 5th Nov 1773 Thomas Horrobin, weaver & Alice Sharples 5th Nov 1781 Jas Bury, weaver & Alice Horrobin 18th Nov 1783 Abraham Entwistle & Mary Horrobin 7th Jan 1784 Jas Horrobin, weaver & Alice Rothwell 24th Dec 1785 William Horrobin, weaver & Alice Rothwell 16th Mar 1788 James Horrobin, weaver & Alice Brownlow 11th Feb 1790 James Horrobin, weaver & Ann Lomax 18th Apl 1790 James Richardson, cotton spinner & Mary Horribin 23rd May 1790 Richard Crompton & Betty Horrobin 8th Apl 1792 Thomas Horrobin & Hannah Hurst 20th Aug 1792 James Edge, weaver & Betty Horrobin 10th Oct 1792 John Horrobin, weaver & Betty Hall 2nd Oct 1793 Thomas Settle & Alice Horrobin 1st Mar 1796 George Taylor, weaver & Hannah Horrabin 28th May 1797 Barnabas Donoghue, tailor & Elizabeth Horrobin 23rd Oct 1799 Robert Lever, weaver & Mary Horrobin 8th Sep 1800 John Horrobin & Grace Davis 4th Oct 1802 John Entwistle, weaver & Esther Horrobin 7th Mar 1803 Peter Pinington, finisher & Ellen Horrobin 17th Oct 1803 James Howarth, weaver & Ann Horrobin 10th April 1807 Thomas Horrobin, miner & Mary Booth 18th July 1808 Joseph Walwork, bookkeeper & Nancy Horrobin 17th Aug 1809 John Rothwell & Betty Horrobin 1st Nov 1812 William Horrobin, weaver & Ellen Ainscough 20th Dec 1813 Joseph Horrobin, collier & Betty Warburton 4th Sept 1815 Jonathan Pendlebury, weaver & Grace Horrobin 28th May 1815 Edward Priest, stonemason & Mary Horrobin 10th Aug 1818 Peter Entwistle, plaisterer (sic) & Mary Horrobin 16th Aug 1819 John Lever, weaver & Betty Horrobin 3rd Dec 1820 Paul Crowther & Marianne Horrobin 31st Mar 1822 Joseph Horrobin & Betty Gerrard 11th Nov 1822 Francis Marshall & Ellen Horrobin 7th Apl 1823 Joseph Pollit & Mary Horrabin 11th Apl 1823 Peter Horrobin & Ann Cunliffe 6th Sept 1824 Joseph Eckersley & Nancy Horrobin 1st Jan 1825 William Greenhalgh & Jane Horrobin 14th Nov 1825 Thomas Horrobin & Mary Pendlebury 20th Nov 1826 Baptisms (limited search) Hannah of Thomas & Hannah Horrobin 29th Sept 1793 Andrew of John & Betty Horrobin 5th Nov 1794 Samuel of John & Ann Horrobin 16th Aug 1795 Betty of John & Lucy Horrobin 15th Apl 1798 Baptisms, Marriages, Burials - Hi Valerie and listers, Some time ago you sent me an article on the Boltonrevisited web site which mentioned some ROONEYs thus: "In summer, on warm days, aunty Mary Ellen Rooney who lived next door, would get the tin bath down off the wall and between them gran and her would fill it with warm water and bath me and Jacky Rooney in the backyard. We loved it because we were outside and could splash about and make as much mess as we liked. Jacky was a boy with red hair and freckles and a devilish sense of humour. We used to get a couple of pieces of wood and pretend we were rowing to America. That old tin bath would become a train, a boat or a plane or whatever we wanted it to be. We were kept clean with Wrights Coal Tar Soap and regularly got our heads soaked in "nit" lotion even if we didn't have nits. We were kept "regular" with Angiers Brand Emulsion, Syrup of Figs, Carters Little Liver Pills and Andrews Liver Salts" taken from: http://www.boltonrevisited.org.uk/184.html by Jacqui KILCOYNE I am now of the belief that these ROONEYs are mine! Hoohaa! I would love to get in contact with Jacqui to see if she can recall anything else about the family. I will post my theories on this new family in another email to the list. Thanks for any help. Best wishes, Sharon in Perth, Western Australia http://users.bigpond.net.au/bunter/bury_parish.htm Bury Parish Pages - just beginning
Hello My GG-Grandfather Jesse Kay was born in Halliwell abt. 1814/15, I have found an entry in the IGI for a Jesse Kay chr. 20 August 1815 Deane by Bolton (Father: James Kay, Mother: Betty) but this is for a female with a query against this fact. I have looked at the film of this index transcription and found that indeed it is for a d (daughter) but hoping this has been transcribed wrong from the original entry I am asking if someone could possibly help me. Hi Jannine, The CD 'St Mary's Deane Parish Church Baptisms 1813 to 1886' transcribed by the Bolton & District Family History Society, has the following entry Kay, Jesse, 20/08/1815, Son, Jas & Betty, Halliwell, Miner This fits with your expectation and, although it's still not the primary source, I think it's fairly good evidence, particularly given the male spelling of the name (as opposed to the female Jessie). Hello Margaret, Thank you for responding to my HART search! I do know that THOMAS HART was born in St. Helens in 1790. He married Margaret Robinson from Kirby Stephen, Westmorland in Liverpool in 1834. He had been married before this, but I am unable to find any information. I think he had a son named Thomas (possibly Michael Thomas) born in Liverpool in 1828. I do know that Thomas (1790) was living in Bolton in 1837, when his daughter MONICA was born. But I can't find any family members on the 1841 census. If anything fits with your information, I would be delighted to hear from you! Regards from Canada, Sue
Hi everyone, In December 1916 and February 1917, the two and a half year old twins of my grandparents died as a result of drinking boiler fluid the previous September. An inquest was held after the death of their daughter Ivy CROSS and was reported in the Bolton Journal and Guardian on Friday, January 1st. 1917. I have just discovered that there was a separate inquest on Ivy's brother Herbert Cross on February 8th 1817, two days after his death. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could check the Bolton Journal and Guardian around this time to see if this second inquest was reported. I believe that the Bolton Journal and Guardian was published each Friday. My grandparents were Isabella and Herbert Cross although only the names Ivy and the twins babysitters were included in the report. Thank-you Pat
Hello List. Can anyone offer any suggestions? I am looking for Daniel BENTLEY born 1853 in Pilkington. I have him with his parents on the 1861/71 census and again, this time with his family on the 1891/1901 census. On the 1881 census I have his wife (Hannah) & children living with her parents but no sign of Daniel. Regards. Perle Brooking. Younghusband. South Australia.
