Hi again Joyce, I have just been going through my notes, and I realise that the Patrick Scott, whose birth I found on the GRO Index, is probably the one whose baptism record I sent to you - Parents James Scott and Ann Daghery. Hi Joyce, Which Censuses have you got Patrick Scott Jnr. on? Have you got him on the 1871 Census visiting Stephen Darcy? I have tried to find him in 1861, but so far I have not been able to find him. I have found a birth, on the GRO Index, for Patrick Scott, born in the March Quarter, 1854, Bolton. I know the census says he was born in Newcastle, but it may be worth applying for the Bolton one, just in case they have his place of birth wrong. Patrick Snr. and Alice's other children were born in Bolton. Best Wishes, Anne in Bolton. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joyce Lennard" <joycelennard@shaw.ca> To: <ENG-LAN-BOLTON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, May 06, 2006 1:09 AM Subject: Re: [ENG-LAN-BOLTON] SCOTT BAPTISMS - ST. Hi Valerie, Mary was born in Ireland. That's why I was thinking that Co may have meant Cork, or County-something-or-other. I'm not quite sure how to go about finding any records in Ireland. From what I have heard, many of the records there have been destroyed. I had forgotten that the ages were rounded down to the nearest multiple of five. Thanks for reminding me of that. Hi Anne, Yes, I have Patrick living with Stephen Darcy in 1871, also in 1881 living at 56 Reservoir St with Charles Darcy and his sisters. The other Scott family ie James Scott, I am sure are somehow related. In 1891 they are living at Bk Soho St where most of my family lived. I did send for the birth record of the other Patrick Scott but of course he had the wrong parents. The other person whose birth record I have never been able to find is my grandmother Mary Alice Scott b. 1883, mother Mary Gryer (Grier). I wonder if she could also be registered at St Peter and Paul's? Patrick and Mary were married at St Patrick's Church. Any help with this brick wall is greatly appreciated. Hi Valerie, Thank you very much for looking up James Rodgers for me. James age is right, and his wife Mary is slightly older than he is. That fits, too. Actually she is a couple of years older than the one that I was looking for, but they do have a daughter Mary, too. The daughter Mary is probably my gt. gt. grandmother. The mother and daughter's ages are a little out, but all through Mary (the daughter)'s life she varied her age quite a lot. So, I think that I will pencil them in as gt. gt. gt. grandparents. Thanks very much for that. Would you have any idea what Co. stands for? As in Mary, 20, born in Co. I know that she was born in Ireland, so do you think that it could be Cork? or County ? Hi Jacqui and Martin, Thanks very much for your interest and help. I'm sure that Jacqui's suggestion will turn out to be correct and that Auntie Florrie's mother will have been buried at the Bethel Church. I'd overlooked that one, and of course it's further away, off Park Road, although that is effectively a continuation of Market St. Returning to St Bartholomew's, as Martin Briscoe has said, the churchyard functions a Westhoughton Cemetery and is used by several denominations. It has been further extended in the last few years. This can be seen clearly by visiting http://maps.google.co.uk/ entering the post code BL5 3TL when the map appears click Satellite. The new section can be clearly seen to the north of the cemetery. Illustrations of St Bartholomew's as it was originally, as it was following rebuilding but before the 1990 fire, and as it is now can be seen on http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Westhoughton/stbartholomew/stbartholomew.html I suspect that perhaps any discontinuity between the church and the new building probably relates to the very different construction materials, and the difficulty of keying in to the stone blocks. Hi Sylvia, In this case, born in the Co. means county. Do you know where their daughter, Mary, was born? If it wasn't in Bolton, then the family were unlikely to have been living in Bolton in 1831 when the census was taken. Bear in mind that in 1841 adults' ages were rounded down to the nearest multiple of 5. Could someone please check the 1831 and 1841 censuses for James Rodgers, b. 1801 Ireland and his wife Mary, born 1799 Ireland? In the 1851 census, they were living at 9 Velvet Walk, off Bradshawgate. Thanks very much, Sylvia Wilcox
I don't know the area but I note that Pevsner says of St Bartholomew's that "the churchyard has been extended West to form the town cemetery". That seems to fit with what is shown on MAGIC if it is the church at SD 652 059 http://www.magic.gov.uk You can see the different layout in the two parts but perhaps not so obvious on the ground. The LFH&HS book on Lancashire Cemeteries lists the town cemetery and St Bartholomew's separately. By the way, I am puzzled about the comment that when the church was rebuilt in the 1990s they made sure that the new buildings did not quite touch the tower which meant that it was exempt from VAT?
