    3. Hi Michael, I have looked at all the Turton records which appear at the back of Bolton Parish Church records, but have not found my Richard. I have, in my notes, a Memorial Inscription for Dionysius Haworth of Turton, who died on the 31st December, 1782 in the 48th year of his age. 1. FW: [ENG-LAN-BOLTON] Introduction
    2. Pete Hulme
    3. Hi Colin & Margaret, the honest answer would have to be "I don't know"! I have a definite link back to Joseph Middleton, born in Dent in 1822 whose father was Thomas. There we run into a problem because there are two Thomas' born in Dent in the right period, one in 1793 and one in 1784. The one in '93 has a good lineage backwards and was the one I THOUGHT I'd traced my line to. The one born in 1784 may have been illegitimate, because there's only a mother's name at his birth and I have no other information yet. Some people who share the same line believe that we descend from the 1784 Thomas and I haven't yet formed a final opinion. In the family of the 1793 Thomas, whose father was also Thomas and whose mother was Elizabeth (nee Nelson), he has 8 children with his wife Jane (sometimes Jennet) Allen none of whom were named Mary. Thomas and Jane were married Christmas Eve 1814 Not much help, I know, sorry abut that :-) Pete Hulme

    3. Hi Colin and Margaret, I am researching my husband's Burrows family, sometimes spelled Burrow or Borough. His gt. gt. gt. grandfather Robert Burrows married Betty Mayoh of Turton on 26.10.1796, at Bolton Parish Church. I have been unable to find a baptism record for a Robert Burrows in this area and I am wondering if he came from the Dent area, as Burrow is a common name up there. Have you come across a Robert Burrow born about 1770 during your research. I have found a Robert Burrow c. 5.4.1763 Dent to John and Elizabeth. My husband's gt. gt. grandfather was named John and he signed himself John Borough on his marriage. 3. Hi Pete and Sue, I have looked at the 1851 Census. It shows the following Club Houses Volunteer - Fielding family Volunteer - Isherwood family One uninhabited house Volunteer Knowles family (Inn Keeper) Lower House If there was an uninhabited house between 'Volunteer' and the Volunteer public house, it looks to me as though they were separate houses. My Kay and Howarth families in Toppings must have been neighbours of both your families. Kind regards, Anne in Bolton.

    3. Hi Sue, yes please, I'd love to know who was living at The Volunteer in 1841! My ancestors, Thomas & Alice Fielding were there in 1851 and in 1861 before Thomas died in 1862 and they moved to Toppings. In 1851, Alice's widowed father, Thomas Redford was living next door at 16 Club Houses with some of her siblings and in 1871 he was on his own and had moved in with the widowed Alice Fielding, his daughter. Also in the Volunteer in 1851 were James and Catherine Isherwood and their children, but in 1861, James and Catherine were gone but their eldest son, Richard was there with his wife and daughter. The landlord changed between 1851 and 1861 and in 1861 it was Henry Hamer, whose family owned the pub into the 20th century as I was told by James Riding and as shown in the picture which Martin Briscoe kindly sent to me (thanks to both of you) I'd very much appreciate a copy of the 1841 census, and will send you the 1851 and 1861, if they are of interest to you? Cheers, Pete Hulme

    3. Hi Andrea, If it's the same Smith Street (Farnworth) then I had ancestors (the Mitchells) living there in 1881 and 1901. In 1881 they were at number 17 and in 1901 had moved to 31, with their daughter, Charlotte, now Brierly living opposite at number 34. I have copies of all the census pages for 1901 for Smith Street if it helps, though its a bit after the date you were looking for. Cheers, Pete Hulme

If you go the old maps site http://www.old-maps.co.uk Search on Folds Road, Bolton Follow Folds Road up towards the top right Find the "A" in the name "FOLDS ROAD" A road goes off to the right at approximately East North East. It goes towards the word "Folds" and bisects the words virtually on the "l", to the left of "Folds Cottage". That road is Smith Street Martin Briscoe Fort William M&LFHS | Gwynedd FHS

The map below shows its position:- http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=372213&y=409728&z=2 The arrow show its approximate position as it ran from Folds Road to Turner St. I have c1920 map that shows the area much as it would have been in the period of interest. I can send it off list if you would like.

    3. Hi I have details of the 1841 census for the Volunteer and there were 15 people living there at that time. The houses next to it were called "Club Houses" and my ancestor lived in one of those. If you would like a copy of the 1841 census for this let me know. Sue

    1. Harrison & Clarkson Bolton
    2. Hi All Sorry to ask, but could someone please help on a search for me. Looking for Clarkson & Harrison Families on Smith Street, Bolton in 1841 - I did buy the 1841 census on disc but unfortunately my 'd' drive is not working properly at the moment (typical)!! Looking for Seth Clarkson (born circa 1827) and Sarah Harrison (born circa 1829) (Living at Smith Street at time of marriage in 1842) fathers names to both above are John & Thomas. If anyone can help me out on this one temporarily I would be grateful. Thanks & Regards Andrea
