Anne Thank you for the data - a bit more for you:- Margaret Nuttall is more likely to have been a sister in law to Catherine. Both Margaret and Dionysius are noted as widowed when they married by Licence in Bolton (23Oct1769). The licence would be worth rooting out. (I note that the marriage to Catherine was also by Licence) Additional Baptisms of first marriage:- James Jul 1757 (IGI) Bolton John 3 Jan 1759 Turton as all below and from transcripts or microfilm of PR at SoG Betty 3 May 1761 Sarah 29 Aug 1762 Robert 4 Dec 1764 Alice 27 Sep 1767 bur 18 Jul 1768 Catherine 19 Jul 1769 - seems mother died in/soon after childbirth Peggy 17 Jun 1771 Robert 14 Mar 1779 Carpenter when Married Anne Brown in 1797 Alice 9 Feb 1781 (according to my notes) I have not yet seriously tried to build families for the children above. I would be interested in the Memorial inscription if it holds genealogical info or anything else of interest on Dionysius. I have been told that he was a very large man. Hi list I have just been sent three photo's of headstones of HURST graves. One of them is my elusive Jesse HURST and second wife Ann. I am over the moon. <Smillie> The person in Manchester does not know the name of the cemetery. They say it is at the top end of Moses Gate Country Park near Farnworth. Can anyone tell me the name of the cemetery please. Gracie New Zealand
Dear Listers Apologies as this is a little bit off topic but can anybody help with the question below? Is there any significance to the Lions on Bolton Town Hall steps? I know Bolton has an elephant as its symbol and wonder if the Lions have been there since the Town Hall was built. Any information would be appreciated, Thanks Sue

Thanks Anne, that means that the other Betsy wasn't "mine" so I wonder who she was and what happened to her parents. Sue has pointed out that the same family, still with the "odd" Fielding appear in 1851 and she's noted as Daughter-in-Law even though she's only 14. Need to work on this. The John and Ellen are very interesting as I don't know who Thomas' parents were and this MAY be his brother. I'll see if I can find them again in 1851 and see if that helps. Hi Brian, I have looked on the IGI for a possible baptism record of Nancy Davidson. There are too many to guess which one is yours but the majority of them either come from Scotland or England. I have a book of Scottish Surnames and this is what is says about Davidson. Davidson - David was a royal name in Scotland as well as in Judea and was one of the Christian names widely employed at the font. The embryonic surnames of fiz Dauid and filius Davidi appear frequently in the records up to the 14th century, but the first genuine surname is that of Robert Davidson, provost of Aberdeen, who was killed in the battle of Harlaw in 1411. Although mainly a Lowland surname, there was a Highland clan of Davidsons in Badenoch, so given to sanguinary feuding that they became virtually extinct in the Middle Ages. The Roxburgh Davidsons formed themselves into a Border clan in the 16th and 17th centuries. Thomas Davidson was master of the Sang Scule in Aberdeen in the 1680's. In common speech, David was frequently contracted to Davie or Daw, and this gives the additional patronymics David, Davison and Dawson. Hi Listers, I am hoping that someone with access to the 1811, 1821, 1831 Bolton censuses will kindly check for Horrobins. I'm particularly interested in trying to ascertain if there is any record of Joseph born around 1793. Joseph married Betty Warburton in 1815. In the 1841 census he is recorded as living at Clap Row, Darcy Lever, with wife Betty and 9 children. Any information that might connect to him would be greatly appreciated. kind regards Roy Horrobin.
Hi Margaret and Colin, Thank you for the Burrow information. I have seen them on the IGI and the ones you have listed have a lot of our Burrows names, Betty George, John Mary, Margaret, and Robert. We go to the Thornton in Lonsdale area quit a lot, as some of my ancestors were from Burton in Lonsdale. There is, of course, Burrow Hall at Burrow with Burrow. I wonder if this is where the Burrow name originated. We always have a joke about Burrow Hall being our ancestral home. In your research for your friend, have you come across any of the Burrow family coming to Bolton. Hi Brian, I thought it might be interesting to do a search for your names on Ancestry in 1841, as that's earliest available census that gives the relevant information. I've listed the numbers of individuals based on specified search criteria. The exact numbers can't be relied on, of course, because of mistranscriptions and errors and omissions in the original data, but I think orders of magnitude can be taken as significant. Fidler in England 1095 Fidler in Lancashire 172 Fidler born in Lancashire 143 Davidson in England 4158 Davidson in Lancashire 391 Davidson born in Lancashire 224 Davidson born in Ireland 98 As the name Davidson takes the patronymic form, I would think it probably had many different geographical origins. I hope that's some help, Rgds, Bob Thornley, Bolton From: "Brian Fidler" <brfidler@netspace.net.au> > Hello List People > I have a relative (Valentine Fidler) who married a Nancy Davidson in the > early 1800's, I'm not sure exactly when. Thank you for the 1841 census page, Sue. That's great and it answers two questions, my Fieldings were not in the Volunteer in 1841 and there are still three distinct dwellings listed as "Volunteer" so it must be a block, not the pub itself. The census page throws up another question (as is so often the case with these things!) On the right hand page, about half way down we find Betsy Fielding aged 4. There's a very strong chance that this is Betsy, the daughter of Thomas and Alice who are in Volunteer in 1851 and 1861, but if so where are the parents and the other two children who had been born by then (John, 1837 and James 1840). Another little mystery for me to investigate :-) Cheers, Pete -----Original Message----- From: Sue Chapman [mailto:susan.chapman4@ntlworld.com] Sent: 15 May 2006 07:00 To: Pete Hulme Subject: Re: [ENG-LAN-BOLTON] Volunteer in 1841 Here you are Pete Thanks I have 1851 but would appreciate 1861 if not too much trouble Sue
