Can anyone advise me on how to trace my paternal grandmother, as her trail has gone cold. She was shown as MARY HANNAH WADDICAR when she married my grandfather JAMES THOMAS HALSTEAD in Bolton (1889 - Q3 - 8c/385). In the 1891 census returns (RG12/3119/3/50a/33) she was shown as MARY H HALSTEAD (aged 25 - born in LITTLE LEVER) living at 4 Back Rose St., Bolton (Holy Trinity Parish) along with my grandfather JAMES HALSTEAD (25) and his children ALBERT (1) and ELIZABETH A (3) (another enigma). In the 1901 census returns (RG13/ 3631/40/13) she was shown as MARY B HALSTEAD (a transcription error!) (aged 35 - born in BOLTON) living at 19 McKean? St., Bolton (St Bartholomews Parish) along with my grandfather JAMES HALSTEAD and his children ALBERT (11), HARRY (9), EMILY (7), MABEL (4) and HILDA (2). I can see a HANNAH WADDICAR born in Bolton (1886 - Q2 - 8c/293) but I can't confirm that this is her - all of my grandparents had died before I was born and now, alas, so have all of their children. I know that she is none of the following 1885 births:- MARY HANNAH WADDICAR born in Bolton (Q2 - 8c/377) MARY WADDICAR born in Bolton (Q3 - 8c/276) , who is a Mary Hannah MARY HANNAH WADDICAR born in Blackburn (Q1 - 8e/372) nor either of the MARY H WADDICORs born in Darwen in 1985. I don't want to give up on this lady so any help that anyone can give to this novice would be much appreciated. Regards, Allan Halstead

Thanks to Bob for the extra info on the Higsons. As it happens I am descended from a line of Deane parish Higsons who migrated downhill to the warmer climes of Atherton, but that was not my reason for searching the births of these people. They were all victims of the Pretoria Disaster and I have been gathering info for a project with Pam Clarke and the Westhoughton Local History Soc. So Cassie, to answer your question, I have no personal family interest in the Ball family other than that Job died down Pretoria too. I note that Job Ball's parents (James Ball & Hannah Higson) married in Bolton district in 1854, but maybe James came into the area from further to the SW. Regards Peter Wood
Many thanks Valerie Can I take those are all baptisms and not births? Regards Peter At 10:14 31/07/2006 +0100, you wrote: >Hi Peter, > >I've found these on my CD of St. Mary's, Deane baptisms: >

In the 1861 census I find two grandchildren of Daniel and Elizabeth Brady listed in their household. They were Jane Rosthorn, age 7, born abt 1854. William Rosthorn, age 5, born abt 1856. I have no idea who their parnets were. Is it possible to find a baptism for them? I feel that their mother was a daughter of the Bradys. I only know of two daughters, Mary Brady, born Ireland and Emma Brady, born Heywood. there may have been others. Thank you for any help or sugesstions you can give. Nancy
Yes, these are baptisms. There weren't any giving the date of birth. Thank you to Dot, Iain and Jeff for you help. I will be making a trip to the UK later this year and as I am travelling alone I can spend as much time as I like at the Bolton Archives. regards Robin in Oz
Robin, Being an ex-Boltonian, there is only one Newspaper in Bolton that covers Births, Deaths and Marriages, and that is the Bolton Evening News. If you type that heading in to anyone of your search engines or Newspapers in Bolton, Lancashire, then you should be able to list your search details. Good Luck. Hi Thanks for youre help I thought that in the case of a widdower getting it might give his age or the name of his first wife thanks Jim
Jim, the parish records of Deane are all in the Bolton records office. St Mary's has an archivist but not sure if they retain any records themselves. Barbara
Marriage Certificates only began with civil registration from 1837. Before that date there is just the entry in the church register which can be viewed on film at various places which is presumably what you have seen. There are transcriptions but it is best to have a look at a film of the original because there might be more information than has been transcribed. There also might be a record of the banns before the marriage, if one of them came from another parish then there will also be a record in the banns for that parish.
