Would anyone know which sub-district Kersley would be in on the death index? I can't find it in the list of towns for each district. I also need the Region, which is used for marriages and births. Hello everyone, Now that we have finally migrated to the new mailing system, this might be an appropriate time just to remind subscribers of one or two differences in the system. You can choose to drop the "-L" in the list email address when sending messages to the list. That means messages sent to ENG-LAN-BOLTON@rootsweb.com will be sent directly to the list. Sending a message to ENG-LAN-BOLTON-L@rootsweb.com will also continue to work. You can unsubscribe from either List or Digest mode by sending your "unsubscribe" message to a single address: ENG-LAN-BOLTON-request@rootsweb.com. You can use either ENG-LAN-BOLTON-L-request@rootsweb.com or ENG-LAN-BOLTON-request@rootsweb.com to subscribe to the regular List. To subscribe to Digest, continue to send your "subscribe" email to ENG-LAN-BOLTON-D-request@rootsweb.com. Please remember that if you don't like the way the new digest appears, you can have it changed to something that looks more like the old digest. Just write to me privately off list and I'll be happy to make the change for you. PLEASE NOTE THAT IT IS NO LONGER POSSIBLE TO SUBSCRIBE TO BOTH LIST AND DIGEST MODE WITH THE SAME E-MAIL ADDRESS. Best Wishes, Valerie
I wonder if someone could possibly check a marriage for me in Bolton Archives when they reopen. I have the Marriage Certificate but not been able to find any trace of them after the marriage. The entry in the Marriage Register might give an address or indication if the husband was from that parish as it just gives an address of "Farnworth" for both of them on the certificate. 26 June 1853 Parish Church of Farnworth John COOKE Age 22 Joiner (Father Joseph COOKE, Tailor) = Caroline BRISCOE Age 21 (Father Peter BRISCOE, Hair Dresser) Witnesses Thomas HOROBIN Margaret WYNN Martin Briscoe Fort William M&LFHS | Gwynedd FHS
Hi Martin There is always the chance that the church register contains information that is not on the official certificate. But this is one fo the registers extracted through the Lancashire OnLine Parish Clerks site, which may be viewed here:- http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Farnworth-with-Kearsley/index.html All information in the register is presented. It would seem in this case there is no additional information. The extratcion shows the followng:- Marriage: 26 Jun 1853 St John the Evangelist, Farnworth with Kearsley, Lancashire, England John Cooke - 22 Joiner Bachelor of Farnworth Caroline Briscoe - (X), 21 Spinster of Farnworth Groom's Father: Joseph Cooke, Tailor Bride's Father: Peter Briscoe, Hair Cutter Witness: Thomas Horslin; Margaret Wynn Married by After Banns by: Richard Birk Register: Marriages 1849 - 1858, Page 111, Entry 222 Source: LDS film 4089879 It seems the withness name must have been hard to read, I will correct that later. Hello Valerie Thanks for taking the trouble to ask some questions about Pretoria victims. I'm afraid your informant may be misremembering what she has read. As far as we know there is no complete reliable list of victims yet published, let alone a record of where they were buried. But I live in hope. A book was published this year by Jack Nadin from Burnley called "Lancashire Mining Disasters 1835-1910". It includes Pretoria with a list of names as recorded by a Mr Gerrard, an Inspector of Mines at the time - one of the best known lists, but still some short of the 344 total, and nothing about burials which was not the Inspectorates' concern. Thanks to the BOLTON list and Bob Winder's help I contacted the current Superintendent Registrar for Bolton, who confirmed for me that only 343 deaths were ever registered from the Pretoria disaster. That includes 16 Unknown Male deaths. Yet we have reliable information about 344 victims. Nothing is ever simple. Regards Peter Wood
Hi, All, Just to add my WARBURTON connection. I have Elizabeth WARBURTON married to Thomas WALLWORK BLACKBURN in 1867. She died in about 1903. No idea of parents as yet. HTH someone. Carolyn.
Hello, Does anyone have any information about the SHANKS family in Bolton from mid 19c onwards. Thanks - Irene Lee.
Hi, All, I haven't been receiving any messages from the List lately. Could some kind soul please make some suggestions as to where to look for the above two families, from the marriage in 1730 of James GARTHSIDE (+ other spellings) of Turton, Weaver and Jane ISHERWOOD of Quarlton.? Their son John was a Farmer at Quarlton, but as I continually search through the IGI (so far up to 575) I can find no references to Quarlton or Turton any earlier. All I need is one link to any GARTHSIDEs further back who may have been James' parents. Thanks for listening. Carolyn. Australia.
Hi List, I understand that the book with regards to the Pretoria Disaster is lodged in Westhoughton Library. Rgds Jim Riding
Hi Carolyn, You wrote on the 29th August 2006 <I haven't been receiving any messages from the List lately.> It appears that the mail caught in RootsWeb's servers has now been delivered. If anyone posted to the list over the past five days or so and haven't received a response, please consider re-posting. With all the confusion caused by mail being delivered slowly and out of order, it's very possible that your message was overlooked. Valerie
Hi Peter, I was talking to a member of the Turton Local History Society yesterday, who told me that she had a book containing all the victims of the Pretoria Pit disaster and where they were buried. Unfortunately, due to domestic circumstances, she is not at present able to locate this book, but has assured me that she will do so over the next week or so. Hope you can wait that long! Valerie
Thanks Maureen It would be handy if I could find the marriage of my great-grandfather Charles Warburton but I can't. I couldn't put all of the information in my first message but I do know his wife's name - it was Maria Thompson. They lived in Gorton and then in Oldham, When when she left him in 1894/5 he moved to Bolton with their five young children, where he worked as shoemaker. He died in 1922 and was buried in Tonge. Was he really married to Maria? Was he married before and not divorced? I don't know. Hello Barry, I found a marriage for Charles Warburton to Maria Norton, Salford, 8d, 210 Sept, qtr 1880. If they lived in Hulme they could be on the damaged part which Ancestry don't have, but MLFHS have recovered a good part of this and you may find them on this. Hope this helps. Maureen.
Thanks Valerie and Martin I received some help yesterday (off list) from Charlotte Ryan. She had found both of the families that were named on the certificates. Joseph and Elizabeth on the 1851 living at White Street in Hulme. Yes Martin, Joseph was a pattern card maker. No Charles. Joseph and Ann on the 1841 living at Lombard Street, Manchester. Joseph was a porter. Charles had not yet been born. She had tried hard but couldn't find either family on any other census. I would have liked to have found Joseph and Ann on the 1851. She found a death registered for Charles Warburton June Quarter 1847 Chorlton. I'll send for this certificate. Thanks again Barry Bain Martin Briscoe wrote: > There is a Joseph & Elizabeth WARBURTON in Hulme in 1851 - are they one of > the set of parents. There is a Joseph & Elizabeth WARBURTON in Hulme in 1851 - are they one of the set of parents. They don't have a child aged 4 so is there a Charles that died between 1846 and 1851? That would eliminate one birth if there was. Joseph is a Pattern Card Maker, does that fit with the first Birth Certificate. Living at 38 White Street.
