Hi, All, Sorry about all my questions: I truly am! . I just want to work out all I have 'found' over the last week or so.(Help, is that all the time?! In the Turton Burials, there is a Mary SUDDEN GARTSIDE, wife of Thomas GARTSIDE of Sharples, (born about 1753). As far as I know this Thomas was married to: 1. Alice(?) - 3 children before she died prior to 1763. 2. Betty BROOKS (of Turton bapt. about 1735; died 30 Aug, bur. 2 Sep, 1805, aged 50). Who could this Mary SUDDEN G. be ?? Perplexion has set in.........................................??? 2nd Question: In the Turton baptisms there is a Peggy chr. Turton to James and Anne GARTSIDE. He was a Labourer, Bradshaw. Plus an Alice chr 1793, Turton to a James and Anne GARTSIDE. He was a Labourer at Quarlton. If they are GARTSIDEs and at Quarlton, I feel sure they must be related to me. They seem to have gone on from there according to the IGI and there are more baptisms (Extracted Entries):All at St Peter's, Bolton. How would I find out about this marriage? I have a James GARTSIDE bapt. 9 Apr, 1758 at St Peter's, Bolton to John GARTSIDE and the mysterious Alce/Alice, with no marriage for him. Any suggestions, anyone, as to where I could find information on yet another GARTSIDE et al surnames.? Best wishes, Carolyn. Australia. (P.S. Seeing I am 'asking' for so much, I hope I shall soon be able to 'send' details to other List members. However, I seem to be the only GARTSIDE researcher on the List. Still, I have asked to join the opr lists as a researcher, so I can do the above. I still have to be 'checked out' by the Vicar ! (Yet to learn more). I am trying to help others! I don't want to be just a 'receiver' and asking Qs all the time. It's just because I'm so new to the list and new to researching in England. Please understand ! C.
Thank you for your reply. I don't know if your WALLWORKS have any connection to mine. Tom is the only one I know of except his daughters Alwyn and Vera. I do know they came to Canada sometime before the outbreak of WW II. I met Violet in Fort Erie in 1967 when she was on her way back from Florida. I have found two possibles for Violet ALDRED on the FreeBMD both in 1893 one in Barton upon Irwell the other Bolton. Most of my other ALDREDS were registered in Barton upon Irwell. They should be on the 1901 census if anyone is able to look them up for me. It would be very much appreciated. It might give me an idea about parentage if I have the entries. Thank you again Elizabeth ewright@wwdc.com
Greetings to All, My Gx 5/6/7(?)Grandfather was John GARSIDE (of Quarlton "w. Lancaster") Farmer. chr at St Peter's, Bolton 10 Feb, 1734; d 19 Nov and was buried at St Anne's, Turton, 22 Nov, 1793 aged 59. (Will dated 5 Nov, 1793, proved at Chester 6 Sep, 1794 & 27 May, 1816. Effects under 50 pounds.) Questions: 1. He was 1st married to an "ALCE" ?. There were at least 4 children bap. to this John and Alce/Alice: - Thomas bpt 16 Mar, 1754 St Peter, Bolton - Jane bpt 25 Dec, 1755, St Peter, Bolton - Jas bpt 9 Apr, 1758, St Peter, Bolton - John bpt 1 Feb, 1760 St Peter, Bolton & Turton. Alce/Alice must have died before John's 2nd marriage on 6 Mar, 1764, St Peter's, Bolton, to Betty/Elizabeth BROOKS (of Turton b. abt 1735; bur. 2 Sept 1805, Turton, aged 70). Thomas married Mary KAY 3 Jan, 1776, St Peter's, Bolton. Jane married John ISHERWOOD (of Edgeworth, weaver), 1774, St Peter's, Bolton. (She died at Turton, 1778). James married (?): Could he have married Ann (?) John, (my researcher tells me, "died young"). Could some kind soul please tell me how I would find out Alice's maiden name ? There are no burial records in Turton before abt 1777 for my ancestors. There is no listed marriage for John and Alice on the IGI Extracted Entries. Hoping for help/advice. Best wishes, Carolyn. Australia.

A special message to Valerie, Linda, Fred and Charlotte : Thank you all sooooo much for helping me ! Have no idea where I'd be without your help ! All my best wishes and thanks, Carolyn. Australia.
Thank you Cassie. 1860 is far too early I'm afraid. There must have been something else between WW I & WW II. I think Violet must have been born around 1900 give or take a couple of years. There may be new information on the FreeBMD or the LANCASHIREBMD. I'll check to see what I can find. Elizabeth ewright@wwdc.com

Hello List I am trying to fit the above people into my family tree. Violet was my father's cousin and worked for my grandparents in a small bakery in Watt Street, Bolton. I'm not sure which side of my father's family she belonged to so her maiden name could be ALDRED or SMITH. My cousin favours ALDRED. Tom & Violet had two daughters Alwyn and Vera. The family emigrated to Canada during the Lancashire Cotton Slump but I don't know when that was except it was prior to WW II. In the 1930s my grandparent had a bakery in Newhall (Newall) Lane, Bolton and another in Ashworth Lane, Astley Bridge, Bolton. My parents Ivy (KILLCROSS) and Arthur ALDRED subsequently took over the shop in Ashworth Lane they sold it in 1951. I would like to know when the cotton slump was and if anyone knows anything about the WALLWORK family. I met Violet in the 1950s when she visited England and again in 1967 or so when I came to Canada. Oh how I wish I'd been interested in genealogy then! Elizabeth ewright@wwdc.com
Sorry, senior moment here - was someone looking for Adam GAR(T)SIDE, because if so he was in Turton Union Workhouse in 1861. He was aged 7, scholar, born Great Bolton. No other GARSIDEs there that I can find. Hi Elyse, I had a look at 4 Kingsley Street yesterday. Unfortunately, there has been a lot of redevelopment in the area over the last few years, and whilst one side of the street (the odd numbered side) still contained a row of houses which were probably pre World War II, the evens side only had one modern looking house - No. 2. Next to this was a gap, probably where the sweetshop would have been. The other (modern) houses backed on to Kingsley Street. This area now is predominantly Asian. In view of this I thought it pointless to take a photo. Hi Carolyn, I have James with his wife and daughter on the 1871 census as follows: 71 Weston Street, Great Lever James Smith, 24, Clogger empl. 1 man, born Bolton Eliza, wife, born Bolton Mary G Smith, daur, 2 months, born Bolton Weston Street is in the parish of Holy Trinity, so it is possible that this was the church where James and Eliza married. However, you do not say what religion they were. If Catholic, then it could possibly have been Pilkington Chapel. Another possible church could have been St. Mark's. Re the Flander's Arms, I think this should be the Founder's Arms, 18 St. George's Street, in what was then Little Bolton. I have a picture of this taken in the 1920's, which I will scan to you. It is quite possible that this pub is still there. Valerie

Hi, All, Is there SKS who would have the 1891 Census for Bolton and would be able to look up a family for me ? (Alternatively how would I look it up)? James A SMITH m. Eliza GARTHSIDE in the June 1/4, 1870, Bolton. They appear in the 1881 Census as living at 71 Weston Street, Great Bolton, Lancashire. James SMITH Head 34 b Bolton Master Clogger Eliza SMITH Wife 34 b.Bolton Charles E. SMITH Son 3 b.Bolton John A. SMITH Son 18m b.Bolton Eliza SMITH Dau 3m b.Bolton This was the James SMITH who made shoes for the Bolton Wanderers. I just wonder whether he is related to the Phil GARTSIDE of that Club ? Eliza SMITH's M.S. was GARTHSIDE). How would I locate the Church at which he and Eliza were married? Eliza was always called "Mrs J.A.SMITH" in letters my family have. One is dated 1909 and addressed to her at "Flanders Arms Hotel", St George Street, Bolton. (Or possibly George Street Lane). Does anyone know if this is still standing? There is also a photograph taken by "Hargreaves Photographer", Bolton. Eliza died on 6 Dec, 1960. I would greatly appreciate some help. Best wishes, Carolyn. Australia.
