Hi, all, Sorry to be such a pest!....................... Would anyone have an 1841 Census for James GARTHSIDE/GARTSIDE/GARSIDE with wife Ann ? (Could she have been Ann HOWARD)? They seem to have had the ff. children: - 1790 Peggy bpt Turton - 1793 Alice bpt Turton - 1797 James bpt St Peter's, BLM - 1799 Sarah bpt St Peter's, BLM - 1802 Jane bpt St Perer's, BLM - 1804 James bpt St Peter's, BLM - 1807 John bpt St Peter's, BLM. Any information would be very much appreciated. Father, James was bpt 1758, St Peter's, BLM to John GARTSIDE and a mysterious Alice/Alce. So he'd be about 83 years of age ! Probably not alive. I wonder if his wife or children are? Best wishes, Carolyn. Australia.
Hi, All, My ancesor, Peggy / Margaret GARTHSIDE/GARTSIDE/GARSIDE, daughter of William GARTHSIDE and Betty HAMER (bpt. 1798) married James SHARPLES in 1818. Children: (at least): - 1819 Sarah St Peter's, BLM - 1820 William St Peter's, BLM - 1824 Henry St Peter's, BLM - 1827 George St Peter's, BLM. Would any kind person be able to look them up in an 1841 Census? Peggy/Margaret would be aged about 41. Grateful to SKS.......... Carolyn. Australia.
Hi. The surname may be listed as above or GARTSIDE/GARSIDE. Thomas GARTHSIDE married Elizabeth SMITH, 3 Mar, 1828, St Peter's, Bolton Le Moors. They had the ff. children: (at least).................... - 1828 John (Jno) bpt St Peter's BLM. - 1831 Mary bpt BLM - 1833 Margaret bpt BLM - 1835 Margaret bpt BLM - 1840 Thomas bpt BLM - 1843 Emma bpt Tottington. Would anyone have them in an 1841 Census? Maybe they would be at Tottington in an 1851 Census with more children, or hopefully some of the above. Best wishes and hopeful, Carolyn. Australia.

Hi Rachel, Try www.old-maps.co.uk click on Co-ordinate and use 370500,416512 in the top rh corner of this map you will find “shore” you will also see Kenyons & Moss houses the next two places on the 1841 census. The James Walch at Kenyons was my GGGG Grandfather, I believe his wife was a Margaret Holt! With regards to Globe Cottages I would think that these are on what is now Bedford St,looking at the 1851 census as the next property after the Globe is on Blackburn Rd. My Grandmother retired to one of these in that late 1960`s and they are not very big at all. One room and a small kitchen down stairs and two rooms upstairs and they still had an outside toilet, not a very big home for a family of 8!!! I don’t think that your Shore Farm is still there but I could be wrong. He had left the Quarry and was working as a Bobbit Cleaner in a Cotton Mill as were a number of his children. Was there a Cotton Mill in the area? Other children are showing as working in a Factory, again was there one nearby? By this time Benjamin and Ellen has 10 children! As you can see, I have many questions - if there is a book about Turton and Egerton I would love to know so that I can get a better understanding of the area - does one exists? Not being familiar with that area I would love any info anyone can give about the history of both places. Hi there, back with more questions......would anyone happen to know about the above records and where I could find them? What was Turton Manor? Cheers, Rachel
I would say that you need to check the electoral roll for that period (presume the family lived over the shop?) so you can be sure of the spelling of the surname, obviously she will not be recorded but her parents will. If one of her parents have an uncommon name then you might be able to find a death in Death Index, she or a relative might be the informant which will give an address at that time and possibly her married name if she was the informant. You could try GRO TRACELINE, it is not a free service but you really need the exact name. http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/research/traceline/index.asp#0 Martin Briscoe Fort William M&LFHS | Gwynedd FHS -----Original Message----- From: eng-lan-bolton-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:eng-lan-bolton-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Pete Hulme Sent: 15 September 2006 11:28 To: ENG-LAN-BOLTON@rootsweb.com Subject: [ENG-LAN-BOLTON] Sheila Fair, can anyone help, please? Hi Barbara, Ive looked for the death of George Hart in the GRO index from the September quarter 1837 to June quarter. The only one I found was September 1837, George Hart, Manchester. HTH Valerie ________________________________________ From: Barbara Forsey [mailto:forsey@socal.rr.com] Sent: 11 September 2006 01:45 To: v.lirakis@ntlworld.com Subject: George Hart Hi Valerie, I would be grateful if you could look up George Hart for me when you can. I am also trying to find his death info. I suspect he died prior to the 1841 census. Let me know if you could look it up for me. Thanks, Barbara Los Angeles, Ca Hi Barbara, You wrote <Could someone look up the marriage record of George Hart married Betty Rostron 1st Jan 1822 at St Peter, Bolton Le Moors (IGI).> I have the indexes of St.Peter's marriages and can confirm that George Hart married Betty Rostron (Rosthorn on the transcription) in 1822. Unfortunately these indexes do not give any more information. You wrote <Can I order a certificate from the Church?>. I would doubt this. You wrote <I am interested in place of birth and names of parents.> The actual marriage records for this period do not normally give place of birth (only the parish), and do not give names of parents. The only other information you are likely to get are names of witnesses, and occupation of groom. I could look up this marriage record next time I go to the Archives, which are closed at the moment for stocktaking. Valerie
Does anyoe have any suggestions on how to trace George Hart. He married in 1822 at St Peter, Bolton Le Moors but it seems there is no information there that is of any help. In the census his children say their father was born in Ireland. He is gone ( as best I can see) before the 1841 census. Is there any way to trace him at this point? Any immigration records from Ireland? I have not found his death information either. Any suggestions welcomed. Thank you, Barbara Forsey Los Angeles, CA USA
Hi Mag, Thanks very much for this information. Bank Meadow still exists in Horwich. Any more info you can obtain will be very welcome. Valerie
