>From another list............ I'm trying to track down a quarry accident, near Bromley Cross, where my grandfather lost an eye. His wedding photo in 1905 shows his with 2 good eyes and I believe he never served in WW1, so I'm assuming it happened during these 9/10 years. Further information from the writer............ In the late 30's to 40's he was living in Arnold Rd (next door to the Flag Inn) Bromley Cross and I was told of the quarry accident (with vague indications of it being up the road and quite near!). He always wore a patch over his eye, which I found fascinating as a child. He married MaryA BRENNAN in the parish church of Astley Bridge. By 1914 he lived at 50 Hamer Row, Turton. William Orrell was the son of James Orrell & Mary Ann Entwistle. James & Mary Ann had nine children that I know of. The first was George, born 1839. The ninth was Elizabeth born 1859. William was born about 1857 and married Elizabeth Thompson Sept Qtr. 1881 in Bolton. Their children were: William Thompson: Baptised: 6 Aug. 1884 Holy Trinity Church, Bolton. Florence: Baptised: 21 April 1886 Holy Trinity Church, Bolton. Percy: Baptised: 18 July 1888 Holy Trinity Church HTH Joan
Hi Joan, Wow thanks that is exciting. I had read the message on the list about Orrell but didn't know the connection to James and Mary Ann so will reread the list. My husband is the grandson of Percy Orrell and we live in BC, Canada. If anyone has any more information to share on this family please email us as we would love to know more about them. We have information about the families of Florence and Percy who came to Canada but would like to know more about William Thompson as well as the parents, brothers and sisters of William Orrell and Elizabeth Thompson. Thanks again. On Dec 15, 2007 9:13 AM, Joan Bridges <[email protected]> wrote: > William Orrell was the son of James Orrell & Mary Ann Entwistle. > James & Mary Ann had nine children that I know of. Hello everyone, I'm back on the list after some time, when I gave it all away so that I would have a chence to do some renovations and get myself organised. I still haven't finished what I wanted to do around the house and I'm still not organised, but my addiction has gotten the better of me, (even though I have tried to fight it) and so I have had to resub to both the Lancsgen and Bolton lists. I don't have any requests for help from SKS, and I know that this is the slow time of the year because of the festive season but still, so I want just to wish everyone: Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, and may all your 2008 brick walls be little tiny ones! There is a photograph somewhere that shows a police sargent in the middle of the football pitch, directing people. That is my grandad James Brownlow. My dad was also at that match, he would have been about 14/15 and was passed along the heads of the crowd and onto the pitch to get him away from the crush. Regards, Margaret.
Ah yes this is a definite possible (if that makes any sense). Ancestry has it transcribed as Walkow :( So took a bit of finding even with your hints :) Definitely looks like Walkden to me. Class: HO107; Piece 537; Book: 11; Civil Parish: Bolton Le Moors; County: Lancashire; Enumeration District: 8; Folio: 31; Page: 9; If anyone else wants a peak. Hi Michael, Could be another for the "possible" pile, as the Mart is said to be born in Nottinghamshire? Hi Jeremy Following on from 1841 it looks as though James married twice, the second time Mary who was born in Newark, Nottinghamshire - James died between 1861 and 1871 leaving Mary a widow with stepchildren and her own and James' children and in 1871 John is there as her Father in Law - RG10 3932 Folio 75 - Hulme Street, Little Bolton, the only snag is that John is only 66 in 1871 but wrong ages are normal. James and Mary in 1861 RG9 2820 Folio 43. There is a death for Alice aged 62 in 1866 in Bolton (FreeBMD). Just see what you think, I might be wrong Best wishes Charlotte
Hi Jeremy There is a possible Walkden family in 1841 in Powder Mills, Little Lever - HO 107 537 Book 11 Folio 31. John and Alice both down as 36, all the children's names are there (apart from those born after 1841) except that the six year old who should be Ann is down as Hannah (this is quite possible). There is an extra child James, 16 in 1841 so he could have married and left home before 1851. John was a Cotton Spinner. Best wishes Charlotte

Hi all, Is anyone able to trace this family in the '41 and '71 censuses onwards? I subscribe to ancestry but am just not having any luck with finding them. There are a few possibilities but I can not be sure. In '71 there are one or two Alice Walkden's on their own without a husband or noted as widow. Again I can't seem to pin down a certain death for John Walkden between '61 and '71. In '51 I have them Class: HO107; Piece: 2210; Folio: 251; Page: 18; GSU roll: 87220. Alice Walkden 47 John Walkden 47 Sarah Walkden 26 Mary Walkden 21 Ann Walkden 16 John Walkden 14 Alice Walkden 6 Joseph Walkden 4 Thomas Walkden 4 In '61 I have them Class: RG9; Piece: 2826; Folio: 19; Page: 31; GSU roll: 543034. Alice Walkden 56 John Walkden 51 John Walkden 23 Alice Walkden 16 Both are in the parish of Holy Trinity in Great Bolton. Am I even right in thinking these are the same family? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Regards Jeremy
My mam attended this match,if she had been in the wrong place, I might never have been here! She was 3 months pregnant with me,I arrived on 23rd Sept. Jean.
Hi Derek, somewhere I have a newspaper for 1946 with photographs and the story of Burnden Disaster, i'll look it up tomorrow , maybe the editorial will give a better insight rather than memories. regards Jim [email protected] wrote: Thanks to Lori for pointing out the list of names killed. http://www.merseysidepotters.com/Burnden.htm Would have thought Bolton Wanders would have put a bit more in their history summary! Hence my look up on boltonrevisited. So it not just me pushing wrong buttons as normal. Total co-incidnece but topical. I started reading Fred Dibnah's biography last night. His father was one of the turnstile operators at Burden Park on the day of the tragedy and his mum was on the Embankment End, but was not injured.
Hi, The rest of the error message says: "Alternatively, the site you are trying to reach may no longer be hosted at this address." I think that this is the most likely answer. I'll wait to see if anyone knows what's happened.
