Hello to Every One, I was wondering if anyone could tell if it is possible for John Hardman to have married Rachel Hardman. I can't find their marriage anywhere. I do know they had 6 children. John 1818, James 1820, James 1821, Rachel 1824, Edward 1827 and Robert, 1832. I'm pretty sure John ( the father ) died between 1841 and 1851. I have searched Ancestry.com and The Latter Day saints site as well and the BMD. Could anyone help Thank You, John Hardman
Hi again Tamara, I don't know where the Ind. Methodist church records are kept - without looking them up, but I have about 50 baptisms 1895/96 and just four marriages for the same period. As I mentioned in an earlier post, my Hartley ancestors from Westhoughton and Wingates often appear in the registers with the surname spelt "Hartliff" and sometimes "Hartcliff" (and with variations of these). Does anyone know how they would actually have pronounced their name? For that matter, how is it pronounced in the area nowadays? Searching the IGI for Hartliff shows most of them to be in the Bolton-Wigan-Leigh area, with a few in Cheshire and Yorkshire, and mostly before 1800. None from Colne, which is where the biggest concentration of Hartleys with the usual spelling was. -- David Hartley

HI, I am most intrigued with your police detective father and his address on Peel Street. I'm only guessing, but was his police station on Peel Street and he lived close to work? Of course I am referring to Peelian Reform and the possibility the street was named after the great man, Mr. Peel. Love this list for the trivia about Bolton to be learned here. Hi Jim, Sorry I can't see a link with any of the Partingtons I have listed but I haven't gone far back with many of them. However I know that most were born in Westhoughton but there is a Joseph Partington born in 1840 in Westhoughton, who I haven't traced forward. I know nothing about him except his parents, who were Henry and Margaret Partington. Henry from Westhoughton born 1804. There may be a connection with Joseph's descendants but not a line I know anything about. Sorry I can't be of more help at the moment. Regards, Anne
Hi Anne, I noticed your reference to the Partington name, I have a relative who married a Edith Partington of Wingates 1904 . Her father was Joseph Partington a collier. regards Jim [email protected] wrote: Hello fellow listers, My name is Anne and my direct ancestors were born in Chequerbent and the Chew Moor / Lostock areas. Hi all, Is it possible for SKS to look in the cemetery registers the next time they visit for information on Ann (Brindle) McPartlin age 65 whose death is registered Jun 1919. One reference is Bolton 8c 389 and another is Tongue w/Haulgh TWH/31/171. She was the wife of Thomas McPartlin. Thomas McPartlin died 19 Nov 1937 age 82 and was buried 24 Nov 1937 in Astley Bridge Cemetery, R.C. services. Ref: 8087. I would like to know if Ann is buried in the same grave as Thomas. Through the LDS I ordered a film index of Astley Bridge burials/graves but I wasn't able to understand the material. Joan in Virginia, USA
Hi Anne & Lynne, I have been reading your very interesting stories about Chequerbent. I too, went to Chequerbent Mission Church which was built in 1888 and closed January 1970, to be demolished to make way for the M61 motorway Junction 5 slip road & roundabout. The infant school building is still standing, just opposite the roundabout. I started there at 5 in 1950 then went 'across the road' to the big school until I was 11. I will contact you off-line, because we might have much more to talk about. Best Wishes. Pam Clarke, for Westhoughton Local History Group
HI Anne I was so interested to read about your conncection with Chequerbent - I lived there from 1948-53 and attended Chequerbent School. The Mission was the junior school and was also used for social occasions - I recall attending dances there on Saturday evenings in the early 1960's because although we then lived in Atherton I had a cousin who still lived in Chequerbent. The junior school was demolished to make way for the road improvements (?) when the motorway was built. The infant school was across the road (this was the school I attended) and I have a photograph of our class taken in the school yard (c.1952). The building is still there, and I can't recall what it is used for now. It consisted of two classrooms with a sliding wooden partition between them. I have a photograph of the class at work in the classroom which opened on to the road. You mentioned the Smith family. I don't know if they are connected, but we lived at 487 Manchester Road 1948-53 and our neighbours (at 489) were called Smith. The row of houses is opposite what is now the Mercury Motel, but in the 1950s was the site of Sagar's Farm. The Smiths had a son called Percy (probably in his 20s or 30s) who I recall had some kind of learning difficulties, and who I think worked on the farm. I'm sorry I don't recall his parents' Christian names, but they seemed to me (as a 5 year old) to be very old, so they probably weren't as old as they seemed. I hope that this information is useful to you, if you need any further information, do drop me an email. I have seen that will, but I haven't found a connection between Christopher and "my" Hartleys, although Nicholas Pendlebury was a cousin of Catherine Pendlebury who married Peter Hartley - my ggg-grandparents. He later farmed at Ainscoughs, near Wingates. Christopher and his family are in the Westhoughton MIs in the archived list, which I see were posted by you. Yes, Hamlet Hartley does seem to keep popping up, lovely name. He has a large number of descendants in America and some collateral ones in this country who I've contacted, but we haven't established a link there either. He's in the Wingates MIs, also posted by you. They've been useful, thank you. Best Wishes David Hartley
Hi Everyone on the List, I thought I might say Thank You to the List Host and to say how useful this resource is to have the facility to give researchers on similar topics to be able to exchange information. Thank you to Derek, David, Andrea and Stuart (nice talking with you today, Stuart), for sharing information on this particular area in Westhoughton. I took a ride down Top o'th Slack today, and the area now has become so desolate! It is hard to imagine the vibrant little community that was there in years gone by, and the lovely stories you have told me about how you remembered the place...today was rather creepy! Best Wishes to Everyone, Pam Clarke for Westhoughton Local History
