My grandfather's brother Samuel Simms was killed in France in October 1914. He was buried in France and I have found the memorium on the CWG site. However, few months ago I found a web site that gave me a link to the memorial at the local Church which the family attended. I traced my grandmother's brother who was in the Army in the first world war but died at home on this memorial. He was buried at Deane Cemetary. The local Church is St. Helens Road Methodist Church, St. Helens Road, Bolton. Does anyone know the web site? Regards Margaret Booth --------------------------------- Sent from Yahoo! Mail. Hi Jeremy, At the moment I can't find any connection with your John WALKDEN. Although Daniel was born 1808 I'm certain he came from Horwich ( the census also bears this out ) . The first WALKDEN in my line to live in Bolton was Daniel's son Robert( my Gt.GT. Grandfather ) who married a Ann WALKER 1850 and moved from Blackrod to Bolton. So beginning my line of WALKDENs in Bolton itself. Yes, dates do help ! ! Daniel was born 1808 to a James WALKDEN and Nancy/Ann FINCH. At the moment I have James b.c.1785, I think in Rivington but possibly Horwich and then baptised at the Presbyterian Church, Rivington. If this is the correct James then his Father was John WALKDEN and mother Sarah BROWNLOW, possibly tenant farmers in Rivington . At some stage they had to move off the land and in to Horwich. It is roughly at this stage that I first picked up the Walkden name in this area. The children of Elizabeth Whalley 1849/1913? and William Walkden 1848?/1918? from Horwich are as follows: Alice Walkden 1868-9 John H Walkden 1869 married 1893 Elizabeth Starkey Stanley Walkden 1875/1876 Stafford Northcote Walkden 1875/1876 Alice Walkden 1876 married 1904 John Calderbank Fox 1879? Mary Ann Walkden 1878 William Walkden 1881 married 1908 Charlotte Harrison 1882 Septimus Walkden 1883 married 1908 Eleanor Woodworth 1884? Stafford Walkden 1885 married 1909 Elizabeth Brierley 1886? Arthur Walkden 1887/1887 Fred Walkden 1890 married Annie Dickinson Is there any connection here? .
I have some information on the family of William Walkden and Elizabeth Whalley Walkden from Horwich. They had 11 children that I've found from 1868-1890 so this could be a later generation to yours. I don't know anything about how they ended up in Horwich as the Walkdens married into my family so are an auxiliary branch. Horwich Heritage has put out a CD of parish records for Holy Trinity Church. It had a lot of christenings for this family. Not all years are included on the CD. If you want further information on William Walkden, let me know. Regards, Linda
