    3. Farmer Street is shown on the Alan Godfrey 1908 map Lancashire Sheet 87.13. Heading north along Fletcher St, Bolton you pass on the right first St Mark's St, then Doman St, then Lake St. The next street along is Albion St, followed by a block of terraced houses, then the junction with Bridgeman St. Half way along the terrace and behind it, is the very short Farmer St, running to the east. 3. Hi Margaret, Bolton Archives might be able to help, as there would probably be an obituary in the local newspaper, which would give details of his life and service as alderman. E-mail address [email protected] Give them as much information as you can, including his date of death if you have it. 3. Margaret: According to my own family tree, I was related to a John Horrocks who was born on January 12, 1777 in St. Peters, Bolton, Lancashire, England/Bolton, England and died on May 12, 1850 in Little Bolton, Lancashire, England. I really have no idea whether these records are completely accurate as I do not have copies of the either documents. I do, however, have a christening date of January 10, 1783 in Lostock, Deane, Lancashire, England and a burial date of May 12, 1850 in Chewmore, Lostock Deane, Lancs, England. I apologize for not having a middle name for John. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Margaret Horrocks" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, April 28, 2008 11:04 AM Subject: Re: [ENG-LAN-BOLTON] Old Wills > Many thanks for the replies to my question about John Ainsworth Horrocks > who > died 1841 and John Horrocks who died in Fishpool Workhouse, Farnworth on > 4th > December 1871. When I send out notifications of LancashireBMD updates, I usually send them to the lists relevant to the BMDs that have recently been added. Many times I think this may be a waste of my time and RootsWeb archive space because I wind up sending out 10 or 11 copies of the same two messages every month. In order to help me determine if what I'm doing is useful, your assistance is needed. What I would like to know from you is twofold: 1) do you also belong to one of the 'main' (in my mind!) Lancashire lists, i.e., LancsGen, Eng-Liverpool, or Eng-Manchester; and 2) do you want to continue getting copies of the Lancashire BMD update and family history events messages on this particular list? Please send replies to me privately off list at [email protected] Thanks for your help! Best wishes, Lynne

    3. Hi All The question I pose probably has an answer in the 'hidden' gossip of many families When married convicts were transported to Australia they were, with the approval of the Colonial authority, and the Church allowed to remarry [if they did not choose to seek permission for their families to join them] For the wives who for whatever reason remained in the UK [and there were many], what was their social standing/position Research to date suggests that many wives classed themselves as widows, but this act in itself did not in many cases allow for even a meagre type of subsistence Did they receive assistance from the Parish Chest, or did they find a suitable sponsor with whom to cohabitate? In some cases did they actually remarry? In one of the few cases that has come to my notice, the 'law' in the colony was overridden by the UK laws if there was any conflict of opinion All thoughts are of interest Robert From the Roaring Foerties
