I'm new to this list. I actually found it by accident. Maybe someone could help me with my problem. I was at the History Center in Bolton last August. I found my gr. gr. grandparents - George & Elizabeth (Betty) Howarth Howarth (yes her surname was also Howarth) in a marriage record book for February 1831, Deane, Bolton. I'm not very familiar with Bolton so I apologize greatly. In this book all of the handwriting was the same so I'm assuming that someone copied it from Parish Records. I'm trying to find who George and Betty's parents were. I think that George b. 1804 parents were George Howarth and Ann Acton. I'm at a loss for Betty who was b. 1798 or 1799. It didn't state in this book where or what church that they were married. Actually no info was given for anyone and that's the reason that I think someone copied it from parish records. Would there be any way that I could find this information? George & Betty Howarth immigrated to the U.S. in 1852 with 6 children. Thanking you in advance. I'm keeping my fingers crossed?? Hi All Can anyone expand on the word Nurse in the 1841 census What services was it likely to cover, and was it a common occupation? The person in question was an Elizabeth Molyneux, aged40, head of household, living with 4 of her children aged between 17 and 4 All opinions welcome Regards Robert From the Roaring Forties
Hi Robert, I too have come across the occupation of "nurse" in my family. In quite a few cases they are children themselves but not directly related to the family so I assume they are "mother's helpers." I also have seen a photo circa 1915 depicting mom, and two or three children. The people are named as family members and the girl who appears about twelve years old is named as the nurse. Hope this helps. Pat
Hi Charlotte, Many thanks for helping out - my problem is now solved thanks to your records! I have a marriage certificate from 1847 for my gt-gt-grandfather Joseph Phethean and his second wife who was reputed to be named Mary Pilling before she married. However, she had used the name "Phillian" as her surname rather than "Pilling" on the marriage certificate and no father's name is recorded. The plot thickens with a copy of a letter that I have been sent from a Bolton resident dated 1954 which suggested Mary was the illegitimate daughter of a liaison between one Jas Longworth, farmer, of Green Fold and a domestic servant working at the farm! I can now confirm that Mary Pilling is present on the 1841 census living with the Longworth family as a servant herself so there is certainly a connection. As to the illegitimacy claim I guess I will never know! Charlotte, That would be useful, otherwise if you could give me the GRO Piece numbers for Green Fold I could look them up on Ancestry. Could anyone out there help me please? I am trying to find out the inhabitants of Green Fold, Farnworth (Deane?) in 1847. Does anyone have any indication of the which Enumeration District it would be on in the 1841 census? Back in 2006 Anne found this Marsh family at 48 Weston Street. My John Marsh was at 85 Weston St. in 1861. I wanted to revisit this but I can't find the entry on any census. 1851 48 Weston st. Richard Marsh, head 58 Rachel, wife 56 Ellen, dau. 36 John son 24 David son 21 Eliza dau. 19 Elizabeth dau. 15 Between 11 and 12 Weston Street was an Alice Marsh, Head, unmarried 62 born Westhoughton. Could someone see if they can find this entry again for me? Many thanks, Val Chadwick

I was just looking something up on GOOGLE BOOKS and came across this fully downloadable book A Glossary of North Country Words, in Use: With Their Etymology, and ... By John Trotter Brockett Published 1829 E. Charnley COCKERS, or COGGERS, properly half-boots made of untanned leather, or other stiff materials, and strapped under the shoe; but old stockings without feet, used as gaiters by hedgers and ploughmen, are often so called. Cockers occurs in Bishop Hall's Satires. In Lancashire the word is often used for stockings. There is a small place not far from Bolton, called Doff-Cocker, where, my friend, Mr. Turner, informs me, it used to be the fashion for the country people who came from church or market to pull off their stockings and walk barefoot home. Hello everyone, I've added C, D and E surnames to the site now (from the Roll of warrant officers, non-commissioned officers and men in the 2/6th Battalion of the Liverpool Rifles "The Kings") and I've added 4 photographs. Please don't forget to let me know if you recognise a relative in the photos so that I can add their name to the image! The site is very basic (I'm new to the whole web building thing) so please let me know if you spot any errors or have any troubles with it, I'd love to hear from anyone who might have anything to add to the site (on the 2/6th Battalion) Thank you, Tamara (Australia).
