    3. Hi Sylvia, Electoral Rolls are made of Wards within the local council Boundaries, They consist of streets in any particular Ward with the names and address's of occuupants. I don't know how many wards there were in Darcy Lever, but Hacken Lane should be suffcient for your search Norm and Sylvia <[email protected]> wrote: Hello everyone, I'm back on this list after a break. I was born in Eden St, Astley Bridge. Could SKS on this list please tell me if there is any way at all that I can find out who(meaning which members of my family) were living at 13 Hacken Lane, Darcy Lever, say, around the 1920 - 1935 era? My family, the WILCOCK/WILCOX's lived there for many years. My grandfather died there in 1919. From then on, we lose track of them. I know that members of the family still lived there well into the '30's, because my grandfather, Lawrence Wilcock stayed there for a time in the 3o's with them. How is the electoral roll checked? Does a person need to know the surname of the family or just look up the address? And is it so that only men had the vote, and so only men's names are shown? Can anyone give me any ideas? Please? I'm trying to find addresses for my Grandfather Lawrence WILCOCK after he came home to England from Massachusetts in 1919. He was a carpenter and for sometime-but I don't know which years-he had his own business. He lived the whole time around the Bolton area, but 13 Hacken Lane Darcy Lever is the only address that I have, from his naturalisation papers dated 29 May 1935. By then he had changed his surname from WILCOCK to WILCOX. Can anyone give me any help? I would greatly appreciate it. 3. Martin, I would love to see a map of the Halliwell area, and as you say it will probably add to my confusion. I hope it proves that William Horrocks was living near his nephew, I just do not know why he moved from his farm in Horwich to Halliwell to be an Out Door Labourer, and died in the Work House. Thanks in advance for sending me the map. Margaret

    3. Hi All: Just doing a simple Goggle search will turn up an endless list of websites with both the bibliographies of various publications of the magazine, (http://www.papuaweb.org/bib/hays/ng/NGBIBPIM.pdf) and also a number of sites that have access to the actual publications. It seems that the magazine was published in the 1930's to about 1970. There seems to be publications available up to at least 1954. Hope this helps some. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Robert" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, May 29, 2008 5:35 PM Subject: Re: [ENG-LAN-BOLTON] Ebenezer Vicessimus COOPER > Hi All > With regard the Pacific Islands etc > There was a publication called The Pacific Islands Monthly and [The > Pacific > Islands Year Book] > This was being published during the mid 1900's > However as I can not recall when it first started operation it may be > worth > a check if the time span seems appropriate > The publication generally listed all Europeans on the various Pacific > Islands > Regards > Robert > From the Roaring Forties > > > > > > > :-+-: :-+-: :-+-: :-+-: :-+-: :-+-: :-+-: > > Except for personal messages, please post replies to the list. > Other people can learn from them! > > :-+-: :-+-: :-+-: :-+-: :-+-: :-+-: :-+-: > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without > the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. Just having a look at the 1850-ish 6" map and 1895 25" map The 1850-ish 6" map shows Nuttall Row but it is not clear which it is referring to! It is half way between Boot Lane and Delph and by Doffcocker Mill. There is a large building which I presume is Doffcocker Mill then just past it there seems to be a row of houses at right angles to present day Chorley Old Road. On the 1895 the mill is Delph Hill Mill and the houses just past it are aligned along the roadside but there are four of them which fits with your Nuttall Houses. I notice also that on the 1881 census it is written Nuttall Row then with "Row" crossed out and replaced by "Houses". There seem to be four of them I can send you map extracts if you want so you can make up your own mind (or get even more confused) Martin Briscoe Fort William M&LFHS | Gwynedd FHS > -----Original Message----- > From: [email protected] > [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of > Margaret Horrocks > Sent: 30 May 2008 15:45 > To: [email protected]rootsweb.com > Subject: [ENG-LAN-BOLTON] Halliwell > > Could anyone help me to find where Nuttall Houses were in > Halliwell, I had a great uncle living there in 1881. 3. I'm hoping that some knowledgable person on the list may be able to advise me...please. Thomas REED, b.1811 and Elizabeth ROSTRON, b.1814 were my Gt Gt Grandparents. They were married on 26.4.1835 at St. Peters, Bolton le Moors. I have a copy of the parish record. It gives no helpful detail for going back another generation, other than 'both of this parish'. So, I have searched for a Thomas Reed born in 1811, and an Elizabeth Rostron born in 1814. The nearest that I have found is an Eliza Rostron christened in 1815, but as there are both Eliza's and Elizabeths among the grandchildren of Elizabeth and Thomas, I don't think that this could be the one. I don't like the idea of taking 'pot luck', but I don't know how I can go back accurately for another generation. Could anyone please advise me? Sylvia Wilcox, Sydney,

    3. Margaret, Delph Hill is on Chorley Old Road beyond Johnson Fold, in a district of Bolton known as Doffcocker, I have a 1882 map of the area but can't find any reference to Nuttalls house's. Top of the Crop.might mean top of the Hill , there s a steep rise in Chorley Old road from Johnson Fold to Old Kiln Lane.

    3. Some years ago, maybe on this list or maybe elsewhere, I read of a road in the Bolton area on which a/some murders occurred. I think the name Hobgoblin comes to mind, but not positively. Because of those murders on an old, scary road, the word hobgoblin came into usage as part of Halloween vernacular. I remember there was a map pictured showing the road. Of course the word hobgoblin is minimally used in the States, but I would very much appreciate being refreshed on the subject. Joyce Stevens Livonia, Michigan

    3. If you google "e v cooper" "London Missionary Society" and pick "Chapter x" from the hits you will get this: "We met the Rev. R. V. Cooper in Auckland immediately after he had handed his work over to the French missionaries, and we traveled with him to Sydney, whither he was going on his way to England. Mrs. Cooper, who was with him, is a granddaughter of William Henry, one of the first missionaries who landed at Matavai Bay in 1797, so that in them the earliest and the latest work of the Society were represented." from the following page it is clear that the "R" is a typo and this is your man. Hope this helps to make the connection. Judy

    3. The key work seems to be London Missionary Society : a register of missionaries, deputations, etc. from 1796 to 1923 / prepared by James Sibree, D.D. If you go to the School of African and Oriental studies catalogue http://libnew.soas.ac.uk/search/ You will see they have three copies. They also have a book by Cooper in the local language. The Register is supposed to have biog details so I suggest emailing the SOAS staff to see if they will take a peek. A photocopy of the relevant pages should be available via the inter library loan service at your nearest large library. cheers Judy On 29 May 2008, at 10:20, judy olsen wrote: > Not sure who made the original query but.. > > The London Missionary Society would seem to be the key to all this. > This is now the Council for World Mission and the papers for the LMS > are with the University of London.
