Dear Friends, May you and your families be blessed with peace, health, and happiness during this holiday season and throughout the coming New Year, and may we all continue to experience the good will, friendliness, and helpful spirit that is exhibited on this list. Special thanks go to those of you who provide answers to subscriber and message board queries. Your gifts of time and expertise are most welcome and gratefully accepted. Thank you, Sally, for keeping us apprised of progress on the Lancashire OPC site. My sincere best wishes to all of you now and throughout the coming year. Warm regards, Lynne list admin. P.S. As has been the custom in recent years, the rule that messages must be strictly on topic will be relaxed through New Year's Day. If you'd like to share holiday greetings, family Christmas stories and traditions, or holiday recipes, now is your chance. If unrelated to Lancashire family history, please begin your subject line with "off topic." Of course, if the messages are somehow related to Lancashire, all the better!

Happy Lancashire Day, everyone! Kind regards, Lynne >From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lancashire_Day Lancashire Day is held on 27 November. It commemorates the day in 1295 when Lancashire sent its first representatives to Parliament by King Edward I of England to attend what later became known as The Model Parliament. Curated by the Friends of Real Lancashire, it was first observed in 1996 with the loyal toast to "The Queen, Duke of Lancaster", and is open to celebration from everywhere within the county palatine.[1] The day since has been widely publicised, including mentions on the BBC website[2] and in the local press.[3] The day receives support from both district councils[4] [5] and Lancashire County Council;[6] Bolton Metropolitan Borough Council has resolved to support the day every year.[7] Many towns throughout the historic county host events on the day,[8] most notably readings of the Lancashire Day Proclamation.[9]

On old OS maps this was also shown as Starkie St : https://maps.google.com/maps?q=Starkie+Street,+Blackburn,+United+Kingdom&hl=en&ll=53.749409,-2.478704&spn=0.003305,0.006888&sll=53.861162,-2.56481&sspn=0.843907,1.763306&oq=starkie+street,+blackburn&hnear=Starkie+St,+Blackburn,+Blackburn+with+Darwen+BB1,+United+Kingdom&t=m&z=17 When you examine the 1881 census Starkey Street abuts onto Cleaver St which is also the case for Starkie St on the old O.S. maps. I'm sure the two were the same and that Starkey was a mis-spelling of Starkie in the 1881 census. There is no Starkey in the 1871 census only a Starkie, the same is true of the 1891 census. Thanks Geoff Strange thing is that the 1881 Census definitely has it as 'Starkey Street' not 'Starkie Street'. Do you reckon it is the same one? David > Today's Topics: > > 1. Hi David, Starkie Street was on the right off Penny Street (A666), just beyond the junction with Salford, which led into Eanam. Geoff Lightbown
Any ideas where Starkey Street, Blackburn was in 1881? David
This is an extract of a letter written to my 16 year old father from his elder brother on the 14th July 1916 :- "Well my lad, I suppose you have seen in the papers about July 1st and our advance. I was in it and how I came out untouched gives one a faith in a divine power which no amount of churchgoing could do. I was twenty hours in the front line under a terrific bombardment and I never expected to see the old College again. However I came through and at present we are in a pretty French village resting and I don't care how long we stay here. My CO has recommended me for my second star for my work in the front trench but he seems to have got the idea that I am a bit slack out of the trenches which is quite wrong. Whether I shall get the promotion or not I don't know yet but I think it will be alright. The sub who came out with me from Brocton has been killed poor lad. I am very sorry indeed for his wife and kiddie to whom I have written." He was killed 6 months later.
