    1. [BLACKBURN] New Functionality on UKGDL - Occupations and Apprentices
    2. Lynne
    3. News from UKGDL (Genealogical Directories and Lists), the companion site to UKBMD: "New Functionality on UKGDL - Occupations and Apprentices. "We have gone through all the sites we link to on UKGDL making note of all occupation and apprentice lists and indexes, plus ones with specific information about an occupation. "There is a new menu button on UKGDL called Occupations. This new Occupations option allows you to refine the search of occupations/apprentices to your specific area of interest, or browse through the list of occupations. "For example: "Refining the list using the word 'farrier' will bring up a shortened list of 'apprentice farrier' and 'farrier', you can select one or more of the available occupations and list the sites that have related information. "Lots of occupations included, blacksmiths, railway workers, photographers, public house licensees, miners, seamen and many many more. We have also included sites which list mayors, freemen, churchwardens etc. "There are also links to sites which list old occupations and descriptions. "Remember to look for similar occupations. Seaman, Mariner, and Merchant Navy may bring up a slightly different list of links." Happy searching! Lynne

    1. [BLACKBURN] Plan to demolish Burnley mill
    2. Lynne
    3. >From the Burnley Express, 4 February 2013 (http://www.burnleyexpress.net/community/peek-into-the-past/plan-to-demolish-burnley-mill-and-build-new-homes-1-5380405): "A FORMER Burnley cotton mill could be bulldozed to make way for new houses. "There are plans to flatten Queen’s Mill to make way for 18 new affordable homes on the site in New Hall Street. "The Victorian-era mill, which was build during the 1880s, is currently used as a storage unit for a manufacturing firm. "But developers Great Places Housing will be able to redevelop the site if the proposals are given the green light by Burnley Council’s Development Control Committee on Wednesday night. "Two, three and four bedroom homes with private rear gardens and parking spaces could be constructed on the site which borders Cameron Street and Elm Street. "Outline planning permission for 15 new homes had been granted on the site in February 2008 but the permission was not implemented by developers and lapsed in 2011. "But if the latest application is granted, the plans would see the mill completely demolished along with an existing sub-station to make way for the 18 new homes. "Planning consent was also given for 12 new homes at Livingstone Mill in Elm Street last March to Oriental Developments. "A further outline application for residential developments granted for nearby Cameron Mill in Howsin Street has now lapsed." Hope this is of interest. Lynne

    1. Re: [BLACKBURN] Margaret Nuttall born abt 1842
    2. familyhistory
    3. Sally, Just had another look at the 1843/Darwen Margaret - I think we can rule out that one as it looks like she died the same year. The birth records of the children in the 1861 census do give the impression that someone was using the name Nutter indiscriminately with Nuttall. I suppose about the only thing you would get from a certificate that isn't in the Parish record is the address, I don't think the way that the civil certificates were completed gave any scope for a reputed father, the fathers name was either there or it wasn't. I can't see a bastardy order in the Lancashire Archives that would cast any light on it - the Blackburn Petty sessions ones seem to start in 1845, before that I think it would be either the overseers or Quarter Sessions and searches on "bastardy" and "Nutter" or Nuttall" come up with nothing useful. Did you locate the family in 1851 - I would expect them to be in the Brindle/Withnell area but I haven't found them yet. I couldn't see the death of a Margaret Nutter between 1842 and 1851 of about the right age, nor could I see a likely Margaret Nutter in the 1851 census which is why I suspect Margaret Nutter was an alias of Margaret Nuttall (or vice-versa). 1. Re: [BLACKBURN] Margaret Nuttall born abt 1842
    2. familyhistory
    3. Sally, Is your Elizabeth Nuttall the Betty Nuttall living at Moor St in 1841 at the house of Betty Pemberton ? Could Margaret be : Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1843 Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference NUTTALL Margaret Darwen Blackburn TALBOT D/6/92 With Elizabeth having been previously married ? The other odd thing is that in your 1861 Census I can identify Edward & Thomas as having a mothers maiden surname as Nuttall, John is clearly the one where the MMS is recorded as Nutter (born Brindle/Withnell) as is James (1843) but Alice don't seem to match - the 1844 on in Tottington seems unlikey as there are other Haworth/Nuttall births around the same time. All this leads me to think this may be your Margaret : Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1842 Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference NUTTER Margaret Blackburn Blackburn NUTTER B/13/64 Baptism: 12 Mar 1842 St Mary the Virgin, Blackburn, Lancashire, England Margaret Nutter - [Child] of Elizabeth Nutter, Spinster Born: 11 Mar 1842 Abode: Blackburn Notes: P: [in margin] Baptised by: C. 1. [BLACKBURN] Margaret Nuttall born abt 1842

    3. Hello all, My great great grandmother was Margaret Nuttall, born abt 1842 according to census entries, in Blackburn. She was the illegitimate daughter of Elizabeth Nuttall, and her mother married a Thomas Haworth 16 July 1842 in St Mary the Virgin, Blackburn. The Haworth family lived for many years in Fort Street, and Margaret also lived in Manner Sutton Street and Forrest Street after her marriage to a John Slater in 1865. Here comes my query.... There is no birth certificate for a birth of a Margaret Nuttall/Nuttal at that time in Blackburn. There is an entry on the OPC... Baptisms: 3 Jun 1844 St Peter, Blackburn, Lancashire, England Margaret Nutall - Child of Betty Nutall, spinster Abode: Cleaver St. Blackburn Notes: P [Written in margin] Baptised by: T. Sharples Register: Baptisms 1821 - 1855, Page 135, Entry 1074 Source: LDS Film 1849642 .... and Cleaver Street is in the same area that Margaret lived in for most of her life. Sadly there is also a birth certificate issued for 1844, so I'm pretty sure that this isn't my Margaret as her mother was married to Thomas Haworth at this time. On Margaret's marriage certificate to John Slater, there is no father's name shown, so even though her birth and her mother's marriage are close in time, it appears Thomas Haworth wasn't her biological father. (John Slater's father is also not noted - a genealogy nightmare :O) ) Does anyone have any ideas as to what I could do next to try and fathom out Margaret's birth certification? It's been niggling at me for years. I don't need it to go back in the tree - her mother Elizabeth is the stumbling block for that :O) - as I don't expect to find any information about a father on it, but until I know that for sure, it still irks me. The only time Margaret was referred to as a Nuttall was in 1861... Thomas Haworth 40 M Head Cotton Warper Blackburn, Lancashire Elizabeth 38 M Wife Daisy Green, Lancashire Margaret Nuttall 19 U Dau Cotton Weaver Blackburn, Lancshire James 17 U Son Alice 15 U Dau Edward 13 Son Thomas 11 Son John 9 Son But there's no corresponding birth information for a Haworth, and she married under the name of Nuttall. So.... any ideas, anyone?? Regards, Sally
