    3. There is an interesting booklet, Zeppelins over Lancashire by Peter J.C. Smith which I recently bought from Bury Library describing the bombing raid of Zeppelin L21 on the 25/26 September 1916. The airship hit Rawtenstall, the Shoulder of Mutton in Holcombe village before going west to attack Bolton. It then turned north towards Blackburn before dropping its final bomb at Bolton Abbey near Skipton. One of the bombs landed on the 1st tee at Rossendale Golf Club but unfortunately failed to explode but the bomb at the Shoulder of Mutton was more successful, the rubble produced now forming a retaining wall to the car park which contains a datestone 1751 possibly when the pub was built. 3. Hi Diana, Do you have any Marth's in your Pickering family ???? I ask because a Martha Pickering lived across the street from my family, in Blackburn, Lancs. in the 1930's..... her father I seem to recall was Jimmy (don't remember her mother ). The story goes that Marth and her father were travelling on a train from Bolton to Blackburn...one night during the 1st world war and a German zepline followed the train but lost it when the train ended up going through the Sough Tunnel (the other side of Darwen)...the Sough was I think about over a good mile long !!) and the train driver had the presence of mind to stay in the tunnel until it was safe to carry on to Blackburn..... This story was told to me as a child when Martha used to come across to play cards with my sisters.... on winter evenings. Regards Sheila (Fife)

    3. Hi Dave Thanks very much for that, we think Borlase married Ann Eccles so the marriage you found in 1801 seems to be correct. I didn't know about the 3 Census' you found for Jane, so it does say she was born in Blackburn in etc. Maybe the France thing was a mistake?? Because if she was born in France that might make it difficult to find her. Anyway I did find one possible burial for her on 31 July 1886 Burnley Cemetery aged 71 so if she is not on the 1891 Census that may be her. Your death certificates don't show fathers names do they? Only the marriage certs if they are after 1837 is that correct. Anyway I will keep searching for more on Jane. Thanks so much for your time. Dianna

    3. The forename Borlace is interesting in its own right - there was a Minister at St Bartholomews in Great Harwood named Borlace Willock whose name it has been suggested was "borrowed" by Harrison Ainsworth in The Lancashire Witches for his character Borlace Alvetham (Alvetham means "of Altham"). The Rev Willock died in 1802. IIRC from some digging I did Borlace was a Cornish name. (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borlase ) It could be that your Borlace's name was influenced by the Great Harwood Minister. From what I have Thomas Pickering b 1818 in Blackburn ( I have not been able to locate his birth/baptism as yet), he is thought to be the son of Borlasse (Borlace) Pickering and mother ? Thomas was an upholster by trade Thomas married Jane SCOTT 20th of September 1840 at St. Mary the Virgin, Blackburn. Jane I think was born in France!! Her fathers name was William SCOTT, I have no further information on the Scott family, no mother of Jane or siblings!! 3. Hi Everyone I'm doing research on the above couple. I had been doing this research many years ago and thought I would try to find some more information. Therefore I would like to find if possible the parents of Thomas Pickering and more information on Janes Scott's origins. I am descended from the above couples son Willliam who was married to Elizabeth Whitaker and came to Australia in the 1880's both William and Elizabeth died here in NSW (Sydney). Any help or advice is very much appreciated. Kind regards Dianna
