HI Lynne After joining this list 2 years ago and having all the best of intentions to trace our family history I returned to work and everything stopped. Now retired again so its back to chasing the history of the family in Blackburn. I have found the family in several of the census and now trying to track down the deaths of my great grandparents and great uncle and aunt. I believe that my aunt died unmarried but have not been able to track down any info on other members. Is there any way I can find out where they would be buried in Blackburn is there a general cemetery which has the records - as Morton is such a common name - it has been difficult to find out if the following persons are family members - I have found this on the BDM Lancashire online records. 1919 Morton Mary Agnes Aged 65 Blackburn South Western Blackburn Lancashire BSW/12/7/8 (great grandmother) Morton Elizabeth Ann Aged 41 Blackburn south Western Blackburn BSW/12/64 (great aunt) 1933 Morton Benjamin Aged 78 Blackburn South Eastern Blackburn BSE/47/78 (great grandfather) It has lovely to get all your emails over the years even though I have not contributed. We will be in the UK in late August so I now have to get cracking and find out where to go etc. Regards Patricia Ps its cold over here in Australia -----Original Message----- From: eng-lan-blackburn-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:eng-lan-blackburn-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Lynne Sent: Saturday, 14 June 2014 11:52 AM To: ENG-LAN-BLACKBURN@rootsweb.com Subject: [BLACKBURN] Lancashire Fathers Hello all Are you out there? Patricia, Cemsearch.co.uk has lists of various MI's. The ladies that operate it record the MI's on a database. I used it quite some time ago for the Blackburn Cemetery in Whalley New Road. And sent off for 2 x names lists. Through that data I found and subsequently visited graves of my ancestors. However, although the website is still running (It states 15 Morton's in that Cemetery), I am not certain that it is being maintained. You could also try to contact the Cemetery direct? Hello All, It's been some years since I had posted to this list so hopefully I am doing this correctly. This might be a very long message but perhaps someone might have some suggestions as to how I can find this person. Beatrice Walmsley was my grandmother's sister, born April 21, 1881 and had a twin sister Bertha Walmsley. My grandmother was Ada Walmsley and came to Canada in 1903. She apparently never returned home and the two sisters never came to Canada to visit from what I can find in the ships records. So far I have found that Beatrice and Bertha's mother, Selina (Pollard) Walmsley, was widowed not long after the twins were born, her first husband being Houghton Walmsley. She remarried William Henry Whalley and had two sons with him, Henry (Harry) Whalley and William Arthur Whalley. Selina died in 1915 at her home at 1 Hope Street, in Blackburn. Through electoral roll lookups I found that Beatrice remained at this address until 1919. After this her sister Bertha along with her husband Thomas Royston lived at this address until they moved. I have not been able to locate any further information for Beatrice. I cannot find a death with a date that would fit her age. No marriage and I just today received another wrong marriage certificate. I've been looking for her since 2003. Her half brother Henry (Harry) married Elizabeth Parker in 1920. They had son Harry born May 29, 1925. Harry Sr. died in 1940 and Elizabeth in 1966 living at 37 Kirkham Lane along with her son Harry. According to another electoral roll look up, Harry left this address after his mother's death. Again with more wrong certificates ordered I have not found a marriage for Harry or a death. Was hoping that perhaps he had a family and they might know what would have happened to Beatrice. Not much is known of this part of my mother's family. Ada, my grandmother, died in Winnipeg in 1923 when my mother was only 13. I know that Bertha (Royston) had a son Alec born in 1916 and died in 1997. He was married to Lily Shaw but marrying late in life they had no family. Perhaps too much information but maybe someone can sort through this and hit on something that has be missed. Any suggestions on how to locate this grand aunt would be gratefully received. Regards, Alva
Hi Sheila There are a slew of Irish mailing lists on RootsWeb (http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/IRL/). Before you give up, trying subscribing/posting to a few of them. If all else fails, you could post a query to the Irish Ancestry Branch of the MLFHS http://www.mlfhs.org.uk/IAG/ Hope that helps a little. The next meeting is on Wednesday May 7th at 7.30pm. First there will be a formal Bolton Annual General Meeting (anticipated about 10-15 minutes), for which we are still inviting nominations from subscribed members of the Manchester and Lancashire FHS for candidates for the posts of all officers and also committee members. Forms were issued at the last meeting and completed forms should have been returned to Secretary Mrs Barbara Owen, 47, Laburnum Road, Bradshaw, Bolton BL2 3BX, to be received in time for the meeting. If for any reason anyone was unable to do this, contact Jane Milne at (sj_milne@hotmail.com) for a copy of the form which can then be printed, completed as per instructions, and scanned and returned to Jane or any committee member. This is your chance for a shake up or provide suggestions, so please support us with this. We aim to help everyone with Bolton interests, whether you just live in the area and want to meet like-minded people, or actually want help with local research. The official business will be followed by a talk by Dr Sandra Hayton about "Victorian Cellar Dwellers". She will tell us how industrialisation forced the "Rural Poor" agricultural workers and skilled artisans away from their traditional country life to search for employment in the developing cities. They created the new phenomenon of the "Urban Poor", and Dr Hayton has some some contemporary stories to describe their new living conditions. All are welcome to attend the meeting which is as usual at Bolton Cricket Club, Bishops Road, Farnworth BL3 2JB starting at 7.30pm. A Help Desk for private researchers will be available afterwards, and all enquiries to Barbara Owen on 01204 30 9515.

>From Who Do You Think You Are? at http://www.whodoyouthinkyouaremagazine.com - "More than 80,000 films dating back to the early 1900s have been made available to watch on YouTube. "British Pathé has uploaded its entire collection of newsreels to the video sharing website, providing viewers with around 3,500 hours of footage to explore. "Each clip is accompanied by a detailed description of its content, which ranges from bomb damage during the First World War (above), to lighter subjects such as sporting events, seaside holidays and the rather more unusual. "'Our hope is that everyone, everywhere who has a computer will see these films and enjoy them,' said British Pathé’s general manager Alastair White. "'Whether you're looking for coverage of the Royal Family, the Titanic, the destruction of the Hindenburg, or quirky stories about British pastimes, it'll be there on our channel. You can lose yourself for hours.'" Enjoy! Lynne

Dr Alan Crosby will be talking about the 1834 Poor Law Reforms: "after 230 years the new system was designed to be a deterrent aimed at making the Workhouse so unpleasant that people would do anything to avoid going there". The talk explains the details of why it gained its evil reputation and how local Lancashire officials did their best to avoid its implementation. The venue as usual is Bolton Cricket Club, Green Lane, BL1 5RH, Farnworth. All are welcome and a Help Desk available for private research afterwards.. >From the Lancashire Telegraph: RESIDENTS in Burnley will have the chance to trace back their family history at a special event taking place in April. The family history exploration day is being held at Gawthorpe Hall in Padiham as part of a project that is collecting people’s memories of the hall. The event on April 4 will allow participants can take a tour of Gawthorpe Hall and explore the SHUTTLEWORTH family history, before working on how to investigate their own family with help from the Lancashire County Council Community Heritage team. Participants will also get to experiment with creative ways to keep and display their family tree. Basic computer skills would be helpful, but not essential.
