This November at Bolton and District Family History Society (http://www.bolton.mlfhs.org.uk/ for more information), we have decided that after a few serious talks we should take a more light hearted but accurate look at some of our other historical events. We have asked Lizzie Jones, a well know local speaker who describes herself as a freelance historian and writer, to come and visit us and regale us with some tales of "Blunders and Bloomers" of the past. This lady is well known for her unique style of speaking and we consider ourselves very lucky to have her visit us. The meeting will be on November 5th at Bolton Cricket Club, Farnworth BL3 2JB and start at 7.30pm. As usual all welcome, with a small charge for non-members, a Help Desk available afterwards for private research, a recycle programme for used genealogy magazines and CDs etc., (and a bar next door). We are also taking names now for our Christmas Party on December 3rd. Don't forget we also have various classes and courses taking place as we speak, and there will be more in the New Year. For more information please contact Barbara Owen Secretary on 01204 309515 or Bolton@mlfhs.org.uk

This month David Chadwick and Shirley Morgan will be speaking about life on the North Atlantic convoys. They, along with Allan Seabridge, are co-authors of "High Seas to Home, Daily Dispatches from a Frigate at War". David, a specialist in maritime history and a Bolton News journalist, was approached by Shirley, a colleague, to research and help publish the letters written by Cliff Greenwood, whilst a WW2 journalist. Mr. Greenwood, a resident of Blackpool, wrote regular letters home to his wife, from enlistment in the Royal Navy and initial training camps, to when he served on the high seas on HMS Byron, a frigate on escort duties on the convoys. In these letters he gave a first-hand account of life in the navy as a coder and some concurrent wartime events at that time. His daughter Sue and son in law Allan later found them in a loft and felt they should be published and shared. Unfortunately Allan and Sue are unable to visit us due to a clash of dates but David ha! s agreed to come and talk to us particularly about the Naval research aspect, and we can pass on any queries to the Seabridges by email. The meeting is on Wednesday October 1st at 7.30 pm and the venue as usual is Bolton Cricket Club, Bishops Road, Farnworth, BL3 2JB. All welcome with a bar available next door and a small charge for non-members of the Manchester and Lancashire FHS. A Help Desk will be available afterwards and we offer a recycle service for old genealogy magazines. Further information can be obtained by writing to Bolton@mlfhs.org.uk or contacting Secretary Barbara Owen, 01204 309515.
