    1. [ENG-KEN-WOODCHURCH] Why did they get married in Woodchurch?

    3. Dear WAGs While transcribing Cowper's marriage licence indices connected to Woodchurch I came across this little gem; 'Thomas Brett of Great Chart, Maltster, bachelor, about 40 and Joan Pemmer of Great Chart, maiden, about 27, daughter of Richard Pemmer, late of Great Chart, Yeoman, deceased and now of her own government. At Woodchurch because Mr Redeemed Compton, Curate there, intendeth to bestow a wedding dinner upon them. Oct 14 1623'. Licence granted. A wealth of information but in the wrong place if you are researching ancestors in Great Chart. A few questions raised about the depth of possible Puritan ideals held by the Curate. Redeemed appears to be a Puritan name. Did the meal cost less than his fee? Was this a way of the Curate touting for business? Did the maltster provide the booze? Did the happy couple get back to Great Chart safely on their wedding night? Exactly how religious were our ancestors? In the end where the couple were married was all about food! Good hunting - Bob Chown
