    3. Hi Thanks everybody for the suggestions re the ship Italy . I now have a picture and a passenger list. I see the steerage fare was $26 very expensive when you have 17 children ! I have yet to find a connection between William and Richard Homewood but I feel there must be a connection somewhere. William was born in Smarden 21 June 1923 and Married Frances Drury in Maidstone in 1852. To complicate life his grandmother, aunt, sister and daughter were all Elizabeth Homewood To my knowledge there is no connection between the "Kent Homewoods" and the Sussex or Hever families.I wish there was ! There is a Woodchurch connection in that Richard Homewood b1819 in Woodchurch married Eliza King in1840 There are also connections to the Bourne ,Hart, Holyer and Dunster families I often drive very near Norbiton Common next time I go in daylight I will look for any old houses (must take my camera) Philip ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gary Samson" <gsamson@goldbern.co.uk> To: <eng-ken-woodchurch@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, February 17, 2007 9:02 AM Subject: Re: [ENG-KEN-WOODCHURCH] Georg King andJane WestMarriageCertificateDetails > Hi Philip, > > There's more information and picture of a good candidate for your > "Italy" on the following website. > > http://www.norwayheritage.com/p_ship.asp?sh=italy > http://www.norwayheritage.com/p_shiplist.asp?co=natio > > Gary Samson > Canterbury, Kent > > Woodchurch Then & Now > www.goldbern.co.uk/woodchurch/thenandnow.htm > > > Phillip Whitehead said the following on 16.02.2007 22:24: >> My next project is slightly related and concerns William Homewood who in >> the 1871 census was staying at Chestnut House,Woodchurch with John Bourne >> he >> was "leaving for America this day" and did sail on the Italy with his >> wife >> and 17 children and settled in Wilmington Delaware . 3. That's interesting, Philip. So do you know who is the Elizabeth Homewood aged 37, listed as 'farmer's wife' staying with the Beslees? Did William marry twice, or is she another relative travelling with them? Josie

    3. Josie I had a job to find the beslees in 1871 I eventually found them mispelt as Besler the other misspelling is Elizabeth which should be spelt F r a n c e s. Date and place of birth tie up with Frances shipping list calls her Mrs Frances Homewood and records in America call her Frances. the census man must have been confused with daughter Elizabeth The children's names and dates also match. I suppose the rest of the family were elsewhere in the village. I can just read the crossed out part in the census as"bound for America" Looking at the Woodchurch marriage index I see there are 4 marriages between Bourne and Homewood so there were plenty of relatives to lodge with.
