Dear Merilyn, While looking for something else just now I found a memorial card given to me by my great-aunt Lily Beslee. It is of a Thomas Bingham. Obviously not your Thomas Bingham, too late, too young, but I wondered if he was anything to do with you? I would love to know who he was. The card would probably have come to my aunt from either the Beslee, Bourne, or Chapling families, all of whom lived at Redbrook Street. Josie The details are as follows: An affectionate remembrance of Thomas Bingham, who died 28th march 1878, aged 7 years. Weep not dear sister for thy child, Bid sorrow come no more, Consider that thy darling is, Not lost, but gone before. No doubt but you remember well, The happy looks he wore, But now that smiling face is cold, Not lost, but gone before. 'Tis true, while here on earth he stayed, Great suffering he bore, But now he lives with Christ above, Not lost, but gone before. Till thou shalt enter with thy child, Through the celestial door, Do not forgot thy darling is, Not lost, but gone before.
Dear Merilyn and Josie Thomas Bingham (1776-), father of Mary Bingham (1802-1880) who married David Couchman (1813-1896) at Woodchurch on 19th April 1840, was my 4X great grandfather. Mary (1802-1880) was the second of 11 children, my 3X great grandfather, William Bingham (1822-1885) being the tenth. Thomas Bingham (1776-) married Mary King (1782-1856) approximately May 1800 at St. Mary's, Great Chart. Banns were read in Woodchurch and Great Chart. Thomas was christened 26th November 1776 at Woodchurch and Mary 25th December 1782 at Great Chart. Mary, Widow, died at Sly Corner, Kenardington on 29th October 1856. I have a copy of her death certificate. I have not found the death/burial details of Thomas Bingham (1776-) yet. Thomas (1776-) was the eldest of 8 children of James Bingham (1752 approximately -1828) and Mary Henman (1752 calculated - 1834). They married at Woodchurch 30th July 1775. Both were parishioners of Woodchurch at the time of their marriage. Both were buried at Woodchurch. No known graves. William Bingham (1822-1885), my 3X great grandfather, married Mary Ann Ransley (1834-1922) at St Mary's Kenardington on 12th April 1856. My mother now 91, remembers Mary Ann Ransley Bingham clearly. They had 7 children, Sarah Ann, my great grandmother (1863-1951) being the third. I remember her from when I stayed with her in 1947 at Staplehurst, the only great grandparent I knew. The 6th child of William (1822-1885) and Mary Ann (1834-1922) was Thomas Bingham, my great great uncle, christened at Woodchurch 4th April 1871 (privately so probably sickly at birth) and buried at Woodchurch 4th April 1878. No known grave. I now know he died 28th March 1878. Many thanks Josie. I have been unable to trace Mary Henman's ancestors. I hope that tidy's a few things up. Pat and I returned from the US yesterday. Dear Bob, Excellent! I'm so pleased you were able to able to link Thomas Bingham to the right family. I think it might be a good idea if I put the bare details of all my cards on the list as I have a few that I can't match up! However, I must go and do some more searching in my cupboards as your email and Merilyn's have raised a few more questions. My father's family (Back) spent from about 1700 -1750s in Woodchurch, then about 1800- present day. In the intervening period one generation was apprenticed out as poor children to Shadoxhurst, I think, to a Couchman. One of them also married a Bingham in Shadoxhurst. Lastly, Rebecca Cramp in Merilyn's email is ringing bells because my Beslees married into the Cramp family twice in the early 1800s; one was a Rebecca....must go and look...good thing it's bank holiday. Best wishes, Josie
Dear Bob I was interested to see the name Ransley. I wonder if Mary Ann has any connections to my Ransleys. My great grandmother was Susannah Ransley, b 1833 in Woodchurch. Her father was William Ransley 1793 - 1837 and her mother Martha Morris b1795 or 1801 who, after William's death married Charles Bourne 1811 - 1859. Do you have any other information, please?
