Dear John I include my notes on my Pubklican research at the Bonny Cravat in Woodchurch 1851-1982 showing my sources. Everything I used I found at the Centre fro Kentish Studies at Maidstone. In the 20th Century it was mainly Kelly's Dirctory published about every 5 years and the Electoral Roll published every year except during WWII. Parish Records could christenings, marriages or burials. Sorry about the type size. 1851 Mahala Rolfe Census Born 1820 Tenterden Mahala Rolfe marries Edmund Bourne 1852 Mahala Bourne Died at Northfleet and buried at Woodchurch 1888 1855 Edmund Bourne - Kelly's Directory Edmund Bourne Publican 1852-1856 1854 Born 1820 Woodchurch Died Woodchurch 1856 1856 Edmund Bourne - Parish Records 1859 Samuel Fullagar - Kelly's Directory Samuel Fullagar Publican 1856-1865 1861 Samuel Fullagar - Census Born 1830 US Subject Died 1868 Woodchurch 1866 Charles Hillyer - Parish Records 1867 Charles Hillyer - Kelly's Directory Charles Hillyer Publican 1865-1872 1871 Charles Hillyer - Census Died at Woodchurch 1872 1872 Purchased by Shepherd Neame - Brewer 1874 Frederick Lilley - Kelly's Directory Frederick Lilley Publican 1872 est. - 1878 est. 1878 John Walter - Kelly's Directory 1881 John Walter Widower aged 73 Inn Keeper - Census 1882 John Walter - Kelly's Directory John Walter Publican 1878 est. -1886 1883 John Walter - District Blue Book Born 1808 Woodchurch Died 1886 Woodchurch 1884 John Walter - District Blue Book Gravestone in All Saints Graveyard 1887 Mrs Sarah Goodsell Mrs Sarah Goodsell Publican 1886-1899 1888 Mrs Sarah Goodsell Born 1834 Woodchurch Died 1899 Woodchurch 1889 Mrs Sarah Goodsell Gravestone in All Saints Graveyard 1900 Frederick John Milton - Kelly's Directory 1901 Frederick John Milton - Census Frederick John Milton Publican 1899-1943 est. 1905 Frederick John Milton - Kelly's Directory Born Bonnington, Kent 1871 Died 1954 Woodchurch 1938 Frederick John Milton - Kelly's Directory 1944 Albert V. I think the pub started as a beer house in about 1860, where it was purchased by Thomas Knight. I have some record of Mr Knight from the 1881 census. He subsequently sold the pub to James Bourne. According the 1901 census James B Homewood and Kevin Boorman (not sure of the surname on the latter), nephews of James Bourne were living with him and Martha; Martha name confirmed in your mail, Thanks. James or Jimmy Homewood then took over the pub un till the late 40's. My quests is to put some flesh on the bones of the Knight, Bourne and Homewood families, and ultimately try to find out who may have lived in the cottages before conversion to a beer house in the 1860's. I also want to find out the landlords of the pub to date. Any guidance on how to research this would be very much appreciated, I have had no luck so far at the centre of Kentish studies, or at the magistrate's court at Dover. Finally the Knights 1881 census is really strange according to the records, regarding children and grandchildren. The ages seem to match and fathers are given. I researched the landlords at the Bonny Cravat, Woodchurch a few years ago. Got back to its foundation as an Inn in 1690. If you need any help on where to find information like that - just ask. Best wishes - Bob Chown john@worldswonder.co.uk wrote: Can anyone help please?
