    3. Josie I have a Susannah Hart who married a John Ransley 17.2.1789. She was christened 19.7.1760. I also have a note saying her parents were Edward and Mary. Don't know is this is any help or if it is the same family. 1. [ENG-KEN-WOODCHURCH] Message to the Woodchurch list: Prior/Pryer/Pryor/Baker/Burden/Schreiber
    2. Lorraine
    3. Hi All, My maternal family originated from Woodchurch and I can trace some of them back to the early nineteenth century but I am really interested in my Grandmothers era from 1906 in Woodchurch. Her name was Annie Elizabeth Prior and she was born in the Gate House at Henghurst House - which I believe was demolished just before WW2 - as her father worked for the Schreiber family. Sadly her father died 5 months after Annie was born and her mother (Annie Elizabeth Prior nee Cackett) and brother William Edwin Prior and sister Winnifred Ethel Pryer had to leave residence. I know the children lived with their grandparents John & Ann Pryor (nee Burden) for a while as their mother had taken up with a traveller called William Patrick Baker but at some stage their mum came back and stole the children out of the grandparents garden and they ended up living in Tunbridge Wells (appx 1910). What I would like to know is can I get any info on Henghurst House & the Schriebers and why they left Woodchurch. Also my GGG uncle William Edwin Pryer/Pryor/Prior died in The Asylum, Chartham in 1924. I can find him on the 1991 census but not on the 1901 census and would like to know why and at what age he was sectioned. If anyone out there has any info on Prior/Pryer/Pryor/Baker/Burden/Schreiber/Cackett I would love to hear from you. many thanks Lorraine - waiting in anticipation!!!!!!

    1. [ENG-KEN-WOODCHURCH] Multimap? Google maps better.
    2. Gary Samson
    3. As a follow up to my earlier posting, the quality of aerial images now available on Google Maps (http://maps.google.co.uk) is astonishing in comparison to Multimap (I should have guessed as much). I really must stay in more! :-) Gary Samson Canterbury, Kent NOW Available Online! 'A Stroll Around the Green' www.goldbern.co.uk/woodchurch/stroll.htm

    2. Gary Samson
    3. I haven't used Multimap (www.multimap.co.uk) for a while, so was very pleasantly surprised to see there are now scrollable high-resolution images of the village available via the 'aerial' button. Used in combination with the online 1874 OS map for Woodchurch (www.old-maps.co.uk), this is an extremely useful resource for locating properties around the village, especially outlying farms and cottages. On other mapping sites, this level of detail was previously only available for strategically important towns and cities, such as London and Dover. Hmm, I wonder if this is something we should mention to the parish council? Although, perhaps the council is already aware of the nuclear silos near the Bonny Cravat and, of course, everyone knows the mill conceals an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of taking out Hamstreet at a moment's notice. 3. Thank you, Jon and Jennie. I'm happy to guide us through this transition and, who knows, out the other side. The primary motivation for this change, as I see it, is to improve yet further the resources we can offer anyone with an interest in, or connection to, the village (and we already have some of the best online resources of any group of our size), and to bring our enthusiasm for our shared past to those now living in Woodchurch. 3. Hi Martin, Thank you for your e-mail. It's always encouraging to read that the Woodchurch Ancestry Group websites are fulfilling a useful role for those with an interest in the village and its families. Let me assure you that the Rootsweb mailing list (or a free-to-access equivalent) will continue to be the main way of contacting other members of the group. The list has worked well since it was set up, and I certainly don't see any reason to change. That it's hosted on the Rootsweb site also means the list has maximum exposure, so anyone looking to explore a Woodchurch connection will almost certainly come across us at some point early in their research. Intermarriages can throw up some interesting and surprising relatives. Through my BINGHAM, KING, COLEMAN, and FULLAGAR connections I'm sure I have a link, however tenuous it may be, to a good many on the list. Even in the 1960s Woodchurch was still a close community. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on your position), a recent increase in non-Woodchurch families coming into the village has diversified the gene pool. Not a moment too soon, some might say! However, having enjoyed the village fete over the weekend, I can tell you that the feeling of community is still very much alive and well. And most of those there had just the one nose. I wish you well with your other, non-Woodchurch lines. All the best Gary Martin Willcocks said the following on 13.07.2007 02:53: > Hi Gary, Josie, and all: > > The new Woodchurch site will be a boon to researchers, and I agree that > a more formal organization is in order. 3. Hi Gary, Josie, and all: The new Woodchurch site will be a boon to researchers, and I agree that a more formal organization is in order. However, unless there is an easy structure for payments, I am not sure that a paid subscription to the group is a good idea. There are several other organizations I have not joined because (a) I'm a pensioner, (b) I can't pay in sterling easily from the USA, and (c) in terms of the Rootsweb affiliation I don't think the mailing list should be anything other than free to use. Membership might be an option for visitors to the museum, especially if that also buys access to, for instance, KFHS records etc., and/or discounts on museum guides and other items. You folks have put in a great deal of effort to put together the Woodchurch site and it has certainly been helpful to me. I have also contributed to the research with census information and my own personal tree information - I feel very connected to the other Woodchurch members whom I would not have known existed but for the Rootsweb mailing list in the first place. And because of all the intermarriages in this area of Kent, most of us are literally cousins. The only proviso I have is that sometimes I do need a broader perspective, as my TAYLOR lines derive from Cranbrook, and there have been other relatives with connections to Rye, Tenterden, High Halden, Biddenden, and elsewhere, where there are no similar organizations that I've been able to find - Woodchurch is seemingly unique. The nearest thing to this organization I have seen elsewhere is the Yahoo Groups Whitby Group, which is the other side of my maternal roots. Again, a very helpful and knowledgeable group of people, a good many of them have direct connections to my maternal grandfather. Now if I could just find such a focused group in the Plymouth area, I might be able to find out more about my paternal 4th ggf!!! Regards Martin Willcocks Taylorsville, UT, USA.
