    1. Re: [ENG-KEN-WOODCHURCH] William Smeeth
    2. BOB CHOWN
    3. Dear Josie Monumental Inscriptions show the following for Wiiliam Smeeth Schoolmaster; 'William Smeeth, Schoolmaster, who died August 19th 1873, aged 73 years. Also his wife Sarah who died February 9th 1845 aged 57 and his only daughter Mary Jane March 23rd 1847 aged 16. (The older memorials being decayed, these were placed here by a few pupils conscious of what they owed to him. A.D. 1907)'. Too late (1907) probably for Joseph Kingsnorth born 1820. He would have known Sarah Smeeth and may have attended her funeral. He may have known Mary Jane when she was a small girl and may have attended her funeral. Best wishes - Bob Chown Josie Mackie <josie.mackie@tesco.net> wrote: Good Morning All, I have been contacted by someone who wants to find out if one of his ancestors, Joseph Kingsnorth, attended Melrose House School/Academy under William Smeeth. This ancestor's son was taught by Smeeth as a private pupil in 1871 after Smeeth gave up the school. Unfortunately Joseph was born in 1820 so the 1841 census will be too late for him. I have suggested that he look in the local paper at Ashford Library for a possible report of Smeeth's funeral in1873, on the grounds that mourners are sometimes listed in funeral reports, although I realise this is a long shot. However, I'm sure I remember reading an article somewhere about old boys of the school praising Smeeth for his work there, but my mind has gone blank about where I read it. ...parish magazine? ....old issue of Kent Life??? Has anyone else read the same article and knows what I'm talking about? And has anyone got any ideas of any other suggestions? 3. Dear Josie It is a very very long way to Sydney. Joking aside both families were on the Cornwall The Cornwall left Dartford on Sunday 5th May arriving at Gravesend the same evening. Sunday 12th May when two steam boats took us down to Margate Rd We hove too off Deal to discharge Mr Rees the pilot. Very cold as we passed the Isle of White May 14th Plymouth bearing NW Sept 1st 1839 At 6 30 am we entered Sidney harbour the most beautiful scenery burst upon the sight with the town of Sidney in the distance Nine males and nine females died on board Not surprising as they would have been well over 100 years old A beautiful day in Sydney today about 30c Regards Jilda ----- Original Message ----- From: "Josie Mackie" <josie.mackie@tesco.net> To: <eng-ken-woodchurch@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, October 19, 2007 8:32 PM Subject: Re: [ENG-KEN-WOODCHURCH] emigrants > That's interesting, Jilda. 3. Dear Bob, I don't know if they enjoyed their meal, but the marriage took place two days after the license was granted: Thomas Brett and Joane Pemmer of Great Chart were married by licence October the 16th. (Woodchurch Marriage Register: P400/1/1) I've read that dinner was served in the middle of the day at this time, so even in October they'd've had plenty of time to get back to Great Chart, always supposing the malster didn't provide too much of his wares! best wishes, Josie

    3. Dear WAGs While transcribing Cowper's marriage licence indices connected to Woodchurch I came across this little gem; 'Thomas Brett of Great Chart, Maltster, bachelor, about 40 and Joan Pemmer of Great Chart, maiden, about 27, daughter of Richard Pemmer, late of Great Chart, Yeoman, deceased and now of her own government. At Woodchurch because Mr Redeemed Compton, Curate there, intendeth to bestow a wedding dinner upon them. Oct 14 1623'. Licence granted. A wealth of information but in the wrong place if you are researching ancestors in Great Chart. A few questions raised about the depth of possible Puritan ideals held by the Curate. Redeemed appears to be a Puritan name. Did the meal cost less than his fee? Was this a way of the Curate touting for business? Did the maltster provide the booze? Did the happy couple get back to Great Chart safely on their wedding night? Exactly how religious were our ancestors? In the end where the couple were married was all about food! Good hunting - Bob Chown

    1. [ENG-KEN-WOODCHURCH] WOODGATE - BROWN
    2. Glynn & Linda Brown
    3. Following on from Lois' information, I can add the following. Samuel WOOGATE born abt 1734 (I have him as being born in Kenardington) married Elizabeth BROWN (baptised 20th Nov 1743) on 30th March 1761 at Kenardington. Elizabeth was the daughter of John BROWN & Elizabeth CLOVER of Shadoxhurst. The entry at Kenardington gives Samuel's surname as WOODGET, but he clearly signs it as WOODGATE. The witnesses were Moses MASTURS and Stephen MORRIS. As to Elizabeth WESSON who married the later Samuel WOODGATE and then George WRAIGHT, I wondered if George was perhaps a relation of Ada Annie WRAIGHT who married Edwin George KING of Woodchurch in 1905. For those of you who have a copy of my BROWN family tree, I have to admit to finding an error with my great great grandfathers date of death. Whilst making copies of the certificates that I hold, to record on a CD, I happened to notice that I had the wrong death certificate for John BROWN born 30th Aug 1818 in Warehorne. Research quickly found him in the 1901 Census living with his daughter Catharine (spelt with a K in 1901) and her husband John KING in Woodchurch. I was then able to find his death in FreeBMD as Tenterden 1910 March qtr vol 2a Page 559 and that he was buried in Woodchurch on 7th January 1910. Best wishes Glynn BROWN in Australia

    2. In response to the inquiry about Eliabeth Woodgate, I do not have direct help, but the following may be interesting. Here is what I have found, always subject to corrections and always needs more data. Samuel Woodgate (1734-1795) in Shadoxhurst married Elizabeth (d.1803). Their children are Ann (1767=1767) Elizabeth, b. 1761 John (1764-1825) in Shadoxhurst, married Mary Bean 28 Dec 1790 in Woodchurch Samuel (1765-1808) in Shadoxhurst, married Eliabeth Wesson of Ashford in Shadoxhurst 1792, she later married George Wraight of Ashford William, b. 1769 in Shadoxhurst David, b. 1771, married Sarah John Woodgate (as above) and Mary Bean had children William Woodgate, b. 1794 in Shadoxhurst George (1801-1869) in Shadoxhurst, married Mary Samuel b. 1804 Kitty (1807-1826).married George Ditton 26 jUL 1826 James (1810-1880) Shadoxhurst For info on George, b. 1801 and his wife Mary Ann, see Kent Archaeological Society monument inscriptions for Shadoxhurst. I am interested in the Woodgates because Samuel Woodgate's wife, Elizabeth Wesson, married my great-great grandfather, George Wraight, after Samuel's death. I'd be happy to find out more about the Woodgates in England. Some descendants of Samuel Woodgate and Eliabeth Wesson emigrated to the US along with Elizabeth Wesson Woodgate Wraight's children to settle near each other in New York state. Would be happy to hear more and perhaps some of this will help. Lois David, b. 1771, married Sarah ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com
