Hi Judy I always take what I'm told by family members with a large pinch of salt! On the 1881 census on the LDS site there's a Reuben Wiles, aged 50, bricklayer born St Neots, living in London. He seems too young to have been Catherine's father, but he was living in Islington at one stage as he has a 23 year old daughter who was born there. Was he Catherine's brother perhaps? Have you found any of them in Islington in 1851? This is probably the key census as Catherine should still have been with her parents. What address was George at in 1861 - I have the 1851 London set, but it's not name indexed, so a street is always helpful? The George you found in 1861 appears to have died in Poplar, East London in 1888 as there is a death on FreeBMD in Sept quarter 1888 aged 81 (Reuben also lived in Poplar -per the 1881 census where he has a 9 year old daughter born there). I think George appears in 1881 as George Wilds aged 76, widow, born St Neots, living alone, so that doesn't help! Again though, this George seems too young to have married in 1822. But as I'm sure you know, to nail down her parents once and for all you need her birth/baptism details. As Lin suggested, you could request Huntingdon record office to search for George's baptism details, but I would try to narrow it down via the 1851 census first, as it is possible that George is a complete red herring. The question still remains though, as to why Catherine would have given her father's name as Reuben if he was George! Sorry if this is a bit disjointed! Hello David, Your thoughts are very much appreciated, thank you very much. I dont have access to the 1851, so no, I havent that information. I would appreciate you looking if you dont mind please. Here's George from the 1861census RG 9/144 Folio: 54 Page: 15 Parish: St. Marys Islington Borough: Finsbury District: St. Stephens Marys Row 3 George Wiles age 54 ag. Labourer b. St. Neots Elizabeth wife age 52 b. Islington William 18 b. Islington = b. abt.1843 Stephen 15 b. Islington George 13 b. Islington Robert 11 b. Islington Sarah 7 b. Islington I cant tell you how many hours Ive spent going through 1861 film, looking for the family. I thought the arrival online might find them hiding. Catherine is not found at the address given on her marriage certificate in March 1862. Ive asked the same question, if George was Catherines father, why is Reubens name on her marriage certificate? Also her first sons name was James Reuben. As for nailing down Catherines 1841-44 birth. It isnt for the lack of trying. Id have had a birth certificate years ago, if it was straight forward. Its been an ongoing task for several years. A cousin has been to London and gone through the birth civil registration books with no luck. Ive recently come in contact with a new-to-me-cousin who has also been trying for longer than I have and in comparing notes weve both covered the same bases and re-invented the wheel at the same time. It wasnt exactly reassuring to either of us. Yet again, parish baptism records for Islington are the stickler. Once again, thank you for the help.
