    3. Hi Richard Luck’s out so far as 1851 goes I’m afraid. He, or who I assume to be him, wasn’t with his parents. 1851 HO107/1748 folio 716B Abbotts Ripton Hunts John Stocker lodger 15 brickmaker born St Neots Hunts In household of William and Ann Walker, 57 and 56 farm lab. In 1871 in Darlington he again gives St Neots as his birthplace, age 35. So he’s consistent. For that reason I don’t really fancy the Eaton Socon Beds John Stocker. I can’t see him in 1861 so he was possibly abroad with the army. 1841 HO107/454-03 folio 5A High St, St Neots Edward Stocker 40 Ag lab Ann Stocker 40 James Stocker 15 John Stocker 14 Edward Stocker 8 Ann Stocker 6 Rachel Stocker 4 William Stocker 12 Previous house included Sarah Stocker 14 Female servant All born in county (ie Hunts) In 1851 the same family HO107/1750 folio 226 Huntingdon St, Blue Ball Yard, St Neots Edward Stocker head married 53 labourer b Eynesbury Hunts Ann Stocker wife 55 b Gt (or possibly Lt) Paxton, Hunts Edward Stocker son unmarr 19 butcher b St Neots Hunts Ann Stocker dau 16 Lace maker b St Neots Rachel Stocker dau 14 Lace maker b St Neots Mary Stocker dau 8 scholar b St Neots James Prentice lodger unmarr 19 labourer b Sharnbrook Beds I can’t see any other John Stockers born St Neots of the right age in any other census, so this looks to be the right one. Unfortunately St Neots parish registers have not been filmed by the LDS (or rather they were refused permission to film them) and they have not yet been transcribed for release on microfiche, so the only way to check for baptisms is at Huntingdon Record Office – if you can’t get there they run an efficient research service at very reasonable cost. On the assumption that this is your family, Hunts Marriage Index does not have a marriage of an Edward Stocker, but there is a marriage on the IGI on 26 Dec 1820 between Edward Stocker and Ann Parish, which looks promising. The NBI has a burial of an Ann Stocker age 63 at St Neots on 25 Mar 1859, but I can’t see Edward’s burial (he was still alive in 1861 and 1871 where he gives his birthplace as Hail Weston, Hunts) Hope this helps Regards David Richard Telford-Bailie <richard.telford-bailie@virgin.net> a écrit : Hello List New to the list and to this part of the country. On the 1881 census I have John Stocker in Darlington, states he was born 1836 St Neots. Huntingdonshire.Painters Lab/Retired Pensioner, later census described as Army Pensioner so I believe he would have been in the Army sometime during the 1850s. I have looked at old files on Rootsweb and came across a census (1841) that had been posted on this list, in mentions a John Stocker born 1836 at Eaton Socom, parents were Francis and Sarah Stocker both 50 yrs. Is there anyone that can confirm whether he was the only John Stocker in the area, I have no idea how popular the surname is or was. I believe he moved north around 1861 to 1871. Thank you.
