R.N. H.M.S. Colbourne Edward Stone Weston Road Brambley, Huntingdonshire [To save anyone explaining the first line ~ Mum & husband are ex-RN; Dad & I ex-RCN, so we know what it means/implies.] Just recently, we were given the above name and address. The address was not in my grandmother's hand, but had been with her personal processions, then tucked away for over 60 years. Gran died in Sept 1951, in the house her father had built when he wed. The name found with the address could be her step-great-grandfather, grandfather or uncle, as all 3 had the same name ... except that .... Of the 3, only the uncle had been born in (Yaxley) Hunts, coming to Canada in 1855, when he was approx. 5 years old - his mother had been born and wed in Yaxley as well. G-gf and gf were both born in Norwich Norfolk. I'm truly perplexed regarding the address and have Googled for several days, without any luck. Cannot find an HMS Colbourn(e) (RN) or even a Brambley within Hunts. Most non-navy types would write H.M.S. instead of HMS, so feel fairly certain no one in the Navy actually wrote the address down. We have no idea of when the address came into Gran's hands, but do know that there has been no sign of another Edward STONE in the RN. We have all the family in Norwich up to 1901 at least, with (would be my 2x g-gf) a stone mason, married in Yaxley in 1849, coming to Canada in 1855. Of his two brothers who stayed in Norwich, one died young, the other never married, so no sons named Edward STONE. Others in Canada are accounted for (no matelots). Our 2 x g-gf was not in the Navy and his step-father was a weaver in Norwich, and had died before 1851. None of the sisters married another STONE, nor did any of their daughters we have a married name for. So we are hoping someone on the list can help, especially with "Brambley" ~ is it a real place/village in Hunts? Any suggestions on the Colbourn(e) part? Did get one lead on a 'Bark' Colbourne, c1843 or such, information to be had from the Canadian Archives in Ottawa. Is HMS Colbourn(e) perhaps a stone frigate? Toni ~ Ontario
