After spending many hours examining censuses for Lincs, Hunts and Cambs, I am now convinced that George Emerson CLARE was originally called George Emerson CLEARS. He was born in Louth, Lincs in about 1838 under the name CLEARS. I've managed to find him still in Louth on the 1841, 1851 and 1861 censuses with the name CLEARS. In 1871 however, he has changed his name to CLARE and is living in St. Ives, Hunts with wife Emma, who was born in Chatteris, and their son George William CLARE age 5. What I can't find is a reference for their marriage, either under CLEARS or CLARE. I would be most grateful if someone with knowledge of the Hunts marriage registers would look for a marriage sometime between 1861 and 1865, always assuming they did get married! The fact that his wife was born in Chatteris makes me believe that they married in this area as opposed to Lincs. Very many thanks in anticipation Norma Clare
