Margaret, Thanks for yours of today. Am surprised you saw no HINSBY or IMPEY in St.Neots parish registers. My wife's father, James Samuel HINSBY was born there 1897. Her grandfather operated a carrier service St.Neots to Bedford and with his brother, started the first autobus service St.Neots to Bedford in 1914. The two brothers were millers, farmers and coal merchants in St.Neots and both raised families there from 1874. Martha IMPEY (née HINSBY) was a greengrocer in High Street St.Neots around 1890 and also raised a family there. The three families were Christians and attended church with appropriate certificates for their life events. I have been extremely fortunate in obtaining a copy of the currier apprenticeship indenture for my great great grandfather Frederick GOODWIN, in Godmanchester 1836, and also that for his son William GOODWIN, in Kimbolton 1859. I had never previously seen such a document, and it makes such interesting reading. The apprencticeship was for a period of seven years and the indenture was a two way covenant. For his part the would-be apprentice [Frederick GOODWIN 1836] agreed: "he shall not commit fornication nor contract Matrimony within the said Term he shall not play at Cards or Dice tables or any other unlawful Games whereby his said Master may have any loss with his own goods or others during the said Term without Licence of his said Master he shall neither buy nor sell he shall not haunt Taverns or Playhouses nor absent himself from his said Master's service day or night unlawfully But in all things as a faithful Apprentice he shall behave himself towards his said Master and all his during the said Term" And the Master agreed: "Paying unto the said apprentice the sum of Three shillings per week for the first year of the said term the sum of Four shillings per week for the second year of the said Term the sum of Five shillings per week week for the third year of the said Term the sum of six shillings per week for the fourth year of the said Term the sum of Seven shillings per week for the fifth year of the said Term the sum of Eight shillings per week for the sixth year of the said Term and the sum of Ten shillings per week for the seventh and last year of the said term" Some twentythree years later, William's pay was slightly more, ending up with twelve shillings per week during the seventh and last year. [I'm not sure if this was due to inflation or whether Kimbolton was more affluent than Godmanchester!!!] Frederick was about 15 when he was apprenticed to a Downes Martin of Godmanchester, and William was about 14 when he was apprenticed to a Charles Flood of Kimbolton. I would be interested to know if any lister has kinowledge of either or both of these two "Master" curriers? Regards Ron Goodwin, Chorley, Lancs.
Hello, After several months am refreshing family names: IMPEY late 19th C St.Neots, Eaton Socon, Biggleswade, Marylebone. HINSBY late 19th C St.Neots. Thanks Reg Harvey
Hi all. In following my Barkers to the county, I have found a possible link to Houghton. Can SKS with access to the Parish register do a lookup for James BARKER born about 1798-1800. If he is there I will need to search for parents and siblings, so, where does the Parish register live? Thanks, Richard Fox. North Somerset.
Hello List Thank you to everyone who sent info on the above query Vida
I have just been given a list of names extracted from the Will of Michael HIPWELL, Innholder of Stony Stratford, BKM. Dated 01 Jun 1609. Probate 18 Jan 1609, it is at The Centre for Bucks Studies at Aylesbury Ref. No. DA/WF 18/60. He names the above as Son & Beneficiary. Unfortunately it does not give more, neither does it say County of, or Town of. Best wishes, John

Hi Ken I have a Rebecca Chapman in my line (born 1800). I know that she had two brothers Richard and David (born 1788 and 1790). They were all born Winwick, Huntingdonshire so could possibly be your Catherine's father or another relative. You would have to get the 1841 census to find out for sure. Hi List, Thought that I would list my current interests. ALTRIP in Hail Weston, Eaton Socon. SHARP in Hail Weston, Eaton Socon, St Neots and Gt Staughton areas. BRADSHAW in Eaton Socon, St Neots and Somersham areas. All periods from about 1800 onwards. Some of the ALTRIPs moved to London, the BRADSHAWs into Bedfordshire and the SHARPs stayed in Hunts. If anyone is researching these names then I would be glad to hear from them. Regards. Vida.
I am new to the list, and wonder if someone could help or advise me with this one Ann CARPENTER(maybe LANGLEY) born c 1803 Eynesbury(according to 1881census, St Neots 1871) Found in both the 1871 and 1881 census in Bedfordshire, as a window She married George STOCKER(hopefully in St. Neots) around 1835/36 First child is baptised 1837 in St. Neots Elizabeth LANGLEY, father George STOCKER, Mother Ann STOCKER, formerly CARPENTER Second child is called Ann CARPENTER born 1843 , fathers name George STOCKER, she was born Liverpool 1843 I dont know where the name LANGLEY comes in, and as their first child was born St. Neots, I assume they married there Does anyone have the 1841 census for this area that can check for this couple, birth index for Eynesbury or the marriage indexes for those years? I have been chasing them for a while now, and cannot find them Any help would be so gratefully received. Lin

Dear Brian, Have you been able to find the censuses you referenced below? Via Ancestry I have access to the 1871, though not the earlier ones. In checking I find your family with Lavender LONGLAND, 63, and Elizabeth Longland, 64, in Warboys on the 1871, along with daughter Louisa Longland, 20. Other possible LONGLAND relations, all b. Warboys and listed as heads of their own households include George Longland, 27, Warboys; George Longland, 37, Ramsey; John Longland, 31, Warboys; Lavender Longland, 34, Ramsey; Thomas Longland, 70, Warboys; and Thos Longland, 43, Warboys. Born in Ramsey and living in Ramsey is Palmer Longland, 30. One John Longland, 67, b. Warboys, is an inmate at Hemingford Grey. If you need further details on these households, let me know. Good Afternoon Huntingdon, In researching our MOWLAM ancestors, I have come across the names Henry BAR(K)ER and Mary Ann TINGEY who married (IGI) Great Paxton, Huntingdon, 1844. I have seen a marriage on 1837online for Henry BARBER at St. Neots, in the same year. Is this perhaps where the marriage would have been registered? Julia Ann BARBER, born 1848, at Brampton, the daughter of Henry BARBER and Mary Ann TINGHAY. Julia BARBER is the woman who married William MOWLAM at Primitive Methodist Chapel, ST. Peter's St. Cambridge in 1881. Her father, as given on the marriage certificate ,was Henry BARBER. If SKS has a census and could do a look up for me, I would be most appreciative. If anyone is researching any of these families, would you kindly make contact? Regards, Dorothy Mowlam, Port Elizabeth, South Africa
