    1. Reuben or George WILES, St. Neots
    2. Judy Mann
    3. Thank you to each one of you who answered my St. Noets Parish Record question. I understand everyones frustration, as it also adds fuel to an already frustrating situation. Let me give the situation and maybe someone on the list will have some light to shed on the subject. We have a marriage certificate for Catherine WILES and James Thomas GODFREY married in Islington, London Mar 26, 1862. Brides father is listed as Reuben WILES, bricklayer The birth of Catherine Wiles is a mystery to us but wont dwell on it as its a London problem. Marriage cert. quotes full age The various census returns from 1861-1901 all state she was born in Islington between 1841-44 with 1841 turning up most often. - no birth found in the Civil Registration birth index the search continues - thus we dont know the mothers name. James and Catherines first child was named James Rueben Godfrey. Weve recently been sent a document confirming a marriage in St.Neots. The sender, a family member is telling us the married couple documented are the parents of our Catherine WILES. The problem is, the grooms name is George and not Reuben. George Wiles married to Susan Denniss by banns 16 June 1822. http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,50985.0.html Weve been unable to locate Catherine Wiles on the 1861 census before her marriage. Weve been unable to locate a Reuben Wiles, on a census from 1861 forward. We realize he may have died before 1861. No mention of a death for Reuben on Free BMD. I have taken into consideration that George and Susannah could be Catherines grandparents, and her father, Reuben possibly their first child, and Catherine possibly his first child. On the 1861 there is a George Wiles born in St. Noets, b. 1807 living in Islington, with a family however his wifes name is Elizabeth. (second wife?) With the fiche that are available, is there anything that will indicate that George was George Reuben or Reuben George Wiles? The original marriage or a baptism record about 1790s 1800 give or take? Any suggestions on this mystery are greatly appreciated. 3. Perhaps my memory is at fault, but I'm sure that Huntingdon Record Office has transcribed and indexed the registers. When I last saw them, they were still in loose-leaf form, but that was several years ago. I've also noticed Record Office staff keying transcription data into a computer, so I would hope that the St Neots transcripts are computerised. Has anyone asked the Record Office about the state of this project? It may be struggling due to lack of funding or other resources. Regards Steven Gibbs Bedford

    3. Yes, thats right, the marriage registers are available on fiche, and burials The 1841 census for St. Neots is availale on fiche also. When I was desperate, I filled in an online request to Huntingdonshire Records Office, which they did more or less the same day. Its £12 per half hour, but the results I got were well worth it. 3. Hi Lin According to the HuntsFHS site the only fiche produced for St Neots (St Mary) - Church of England - is the burial register transcript 1604-1900. They also produce alphabetical marriage transcripts for Hunts, but these cover the whole of the county. If you've managed to find other than these I for one would be most interested! 3. I know that the Bishop at Huntingdon decided to not allow Church of England records to be filmed by the LDS about 50 years ago, for theological reasons. I'm not LDS myself, was raised as an Anglican, but I certainly appreciate the fine work done by the LDS film crews world wide. I'm wondering if now, 50 years later, someone in the hierarchy would consider reviewing that decision. After all, that was a long time ago.I'd be happy to approach someone while I'm at Eaton Socon June 11-18. Jim Bundy. .

    3. Hi Stephen, I do hope that's the case, and that St Neots is included. If not, I'd be willing to pay to have pages copied, as I stated before, and if the Record office did that by photographing pages first, that would be wonderful. I'm certainly not rich, but I could afford to contribute to the effort over time. In another area, I requested copies of pages, and some were just copied, but others were deemed to fragile to copy, and had to be photographed first. It made the copies more expensive for me, but I was happy to pay it, and know that these records are now captured, and the original records don't have to be handled any more. 3. Hi Judy, David, and Kin, You've encountered one of the most frustrating things in my research, which covers several areas of the UK. I've been completely stymied by St Neots, and next door Eynesbury, prior to 1841, except for some transcribed burials and marriage index entries. Indexes and transcriptions are nice, where they exist, but in all my researches, I've felt its important to verify information in the original records. Across the river Great Ouse, in Eaton Socon, I have access to just about everything, but when mine moved across the little bridge to St Neots or Eynesbury, they just disappear. Beyond the frustration is a great fear I have that the original parish register books lie unfilmed, and handled far more than they should. I'm trying to work with the Freereg project to see who can be contacted locally, to get permission for someone to film these pages before they turn to dust. As a last resort, I'm thinking of hiring someone to copy the register page by page over a long time, and transcribing them myself. I just don't know what else to do. Any ideas on this subject are certainly welcome. I'm afraid just waiting for transcriptions from the local FHS will yield results only after my lifespan, and again, they're only transcriptions, not filmed copies of the original pages, which are far more useful. Thanks for putting up with my rant. :) Jim Bundy ----- Original Message ----- From: "Judy Mann" <familytree91@yahoo.ca> To: <ENG-HUNTINGDON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, April 30, 2005 11:42 PM Subject: St. Neots Parish Records > Hello everyone, > > I'm wondering if anyone can tell me where to access the Church of > England parish records for St. Neots? > > I only see Independant and Wesleyan records listed in the LDS > catalogue. > > > Thank you > Judy > Canada > > Researching: WILES from St. Neots > > > > > > --------------------------------- > Post your free ad now! 3. Hi Judy I think the Parish Records for St Neots are only available at Huntingdon record office. Unfortunately they've not been filmed by the LDS, and Hunts FHS only has a transcript of burials available on microfiche. regards David >From: Judy Mann <familytree91@yahoo.ca> >To: ENG-HUNTINGDON-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: St. Neots Parish Records >Date: Sun, 1 May 2005 02:42:40 -0400 (EDT) > >Hello everyone, > >I'm wondering if anyone can tell me where to access the Church of England >parish records for St. Neots? > >I only see Independant and Wesleyan records listed in the LDS catalogue. > > >Thank you >Judy >Canada > >Researching: WILES from St. Neots > > > > > >--------------------------------- >Post your free ad now! 3. Hello list My gg grandfather, David CADWELL, married Emily MIDDLETON on 5 June 1848 in Buckden, Huntingdonshire. David was born about 1829 in (probably) Great Paxton or (possibly) Caxton and Emily in about 1825 in Buckden. They were living in Great Paxton in 1851 when their 2nd daughter was born but by 1853 had moved to Marylebone in London for my g grandmother's birth. At the time of his marriage David was a blacksmith, like his father John. Emily's father Samuel was a gardener. Does anyone have any knowledge of or interest in the Cadwells or Middletons? Many thanks Colin Moretti I'm a member of the Anglo-Italian Family History Society http://www.anglo-italianfhs.org.uk Looking for MORETTI, PAGLIANO, BARGMAN, in London TYAS, IVESON, WOOD, ABBOTT in Yorkshire
