    3. The Goodwin/Goodson mistranscription is then doubly compounded by Hunts being transcribed as Hants, although in this case looking at the original it's more understandable! >From: "Ron Goodwin" <ron_goodwin@circa1984.com> >To: ENG-HUNTINGDON-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: Julia GOODWIN missing from 1881 census >Date: Mon, 23 May 2005 10:30:05 +0100 > >I have a relative, Julia GOODWIN, born 07 Sep 1857 in Godmanchester. 3. I think she's mistranscribed as Julia Goodson in Rowley Regis, Staffs. The original is fairly clearly Goodwin. 3. Hello list Three of my relatives, Martha, Eliza and Ann CADWELL (aged 5, 4, 2) (all baptised in Great Paxton) have been found in the 1841 census staying with William FLANDERS (Blacksmith) (age 65) and his wife Sarah (55) in Eaton Socon. Their older siblings and parents are elsewhere (I've not tracked them down yet) Does anyone have an interest in either of these families or know of any link between them? 2. Maureen Mitchell
    3. Having just checked the Elton PR's (burials) around 1835, I've come across several entries giving Cooper's Hospital as the place of residence. On looking on http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ at the OS map for 1892 for Elton, Cooper's Hospital is located near to the Black Horse Public House. I take it that this was the old parish workhouse - can anyone confirm this (or not), please? 1. John Topham GADSBY (1821 - 1889), buried at Godmanchester!
    2. Dear Listers, Some may recall that I wrote a week or so back about the GADSBYs of Godmanchester. Well, I went to Huntingdon Library today and found a newspaper report of the funeral of 'old' John Topham GADSBY. As the report contains so many names, I thought I would post my transcript of it. Yours, etc. Geoffrey Woollard in Cambridgeshire. Newspaper Cutting (Huntingdonshire County Guardian) 4/1/1890: 'Godmanchester. Funeral of Mr Alderman GADSBY. - The remains of Mr Alderman GADSBY were interred in the burying ground attached to the Particular Baptist Chapel, on Saturday afternoon last, in the presence of a large assemblage of friends, and the general public. The cortege, headed by the Mayor (Mr T.B. FORDHAM), and the majority of the Corporation, the male Sunday school teachers accompanied by Mr F. DEIGHTON, who has been appointed Superintendent of the school in the room of the deceased, arrived at the Chapel about 3.30, where a funeral service was conducted by the Rev. T. OLDFIELD, minister of the denomination. The coffin, which was of polished oak, with brass plate and furniture, the lid of which bore three splendid white floral wreaths, was deposited in a vault, where the bodies of the first wife, and a son of deceased, had previously been buried. The brass plate of the coffin was as follows: "John Topham GADSBY, born 1st August, 1821, died 25th December, 1889." The relatives who attended the funeral were Mrs GADSBY, widow of deceased, Mr W. GADSBY, only surviving son, Mr WOLLEY, Mrs W. RAMPLEY, Mr PARRY, Mr J. BROWN and Mrs HEYWARD. The members of the Corporation present were the Mayor, Mr Alderman BEART, Councillors BAXTER, BIRD, COLE, HOWSON, LOOKER, MARGETTS, REEVE, and SMITH; Mr Gerald HUNNYBUN, Town Clerk, also accompanied. The other members were unable to be present either through illness or absence from home. Among the numerous friends and acquaintances who assembled to pay the last tribute of respect to the memory of the deceased we noticed Mr George THACKRAY (Mayor of Huntingdon), Mr P.E. TILLARD, Mr B. PRIOR, Mr W. BRAWN, senr., Mr W. BRAWN, junr., Mr J. BRAWN, Mr BROMHEAD, Mr NEWTON (Buckworth), Mr STURTON (Cambridge), Mr WILSON (Somersham), Mr T. SEWARD, Mr A. MARKHAM, Mr T. ASHTON, Mr E. CRAWLEY, Mr E. DEXTER, &c., present at the interment. The funeral arrangements were most satisfactorily carried out by Messrs. BIRD brothers, Messrs. BAXTER & Son, and Mr F. MARKHAM, who were the undertakers.'

    2. Dear Listers, I have just discovered a probable relationship with three gentlemen, all by the name of John Topham GADSBY, all born at Godmanchester (in 1821, 1853 and 1874). It appears that they were grandfather, son and grandson respectively. It also appears that JTG the elder married Martha Frances CLARK, of Godmanchester, who was my GGG Aunt. Does anybody else connect with them, please? Yours, etc. Geoffrey Woollard in (Old) Cambridgeshire.

    1. William Gifford
    2. McDades
    3. Hi! I have a problem and am hoping to get some help for the next step. I have William Gifford (soldier) who married Sarah Collingwood in Somersham in 1823. My problem is that I have two different sources here in Australia that tell me two different sets of parents for this child. One tells me that he is the son of Joseph Gifford and Elizabeth Beale, b 1797 in Bluntisham, the other that he is the son of John Gifford and Mary Harden b 1803 in Somersham. I have been unable to read the 1841 census where he may still have been alive and he was dead in the 1851 census. Anyone have any suggestions? It probably is sitting under my nose but I can't see it at present. Regards Lyn

    1. RE: Reuben or George WILES, St. Neots
    2. Judy Mann
    3. Hello David, Your thoughts are very much appreciated, thank you very much. I dont have access to the 1851, so no, I havent that information. I would appreciate you looking if you dont mind please. Here's George from the 1861census RG 9/144 Folio: 54 Page: 15 Parish: St. Marys Islington Borough: Finsbury District: St. Stephens Marys Row 3 George Wiles age 54 ag. Labourer b. St. Neots Elizabeth wife age 52 b. Islington William 18 b. Islington = b. abt.1843 Stephen 15 b. Islington George 13 b. Islington Robert 11 b. Islington Sarah 7 b. Islington I cant tell you how many hours Ive spent going through 1861 film, looking for the family. I thought the arrival online might find them hiding. Catherine is not found at the address given on her marriage certificate in March 1862. Ive asked the same question, if George was Catherines father, why is Reubens name on her marriage certificate? Also her first sons name was James Reuben. As for nailing down Catherines 1841-44 birth. It isnt for the lack of trying. Id have had a birth certificate years ago, if it was straight forward. Its been an ongoing task for several years. A cousin has been to London and gone through the birth civil registration books with no luck. Ive recently come in contact with a new-to-me-cousin who has also been trying for longer than I have and in comparing notes weve both covered the same bases and re-invented the wheel at the same time. It wasnt exactly reassuring to either of us. Yet again, parish baptism records for Islington are the stickler. Once again, thank you for the help. Judy David Cooper <cooperda@hotmail.com> wrote:Hi Judy I always take what I'm told by family members with a large pinch of salt! On the 1881 census on the LDS site there's a Reuben Wiles, aged 50, bricklayer born St Neots, living in London. He seems too young to have been Catherine's father, but he was living in Islington at one stage as he has a 23 year old daughter who was born there. Was he Catherine's brother perhaps? Have you found any of them in Islington in 1851? This is probably the key census as Catherine should still have been with her parents. What address was George at in 1861 - I have the 1851 London set, but it's not name indexed, so a street is always helpful? The George you found in 1861 appears to have died in Poplar, East London in 1888 as there is a death on FreeBMD in Sept quarter 1888 aged 81 (Reuben also lived in Poplar -per the 1881 census where he has a 9 year old daughter born there). I think George appears in 1881 as George Wilds aged 76, widow, born St Neots, living alone, so that doesn't help! Again though, this George seems too young to have married in 1822. But as I'm sure you know, to nail down her parents once and for all you need her birth/baptism details. As Lin suggested, you could request Huntingdon record office to search for George's baptism details, but I would try to narrow it down via the 1851 census first, as it is possible that George is a complete red herring. The question still remains though, as to why Catherine would have given her father's name as Reuben if he was George! Sorry if this is a bit disjointed!
