HI Listers, I will be presenting the entries as I transcribe them from an unchecked transcription available at the Hunts Record Office. Just be sure you know these are unverified. There is supposedly a project in effect to check these, but that process started in 1999, and isn't finished yet, so I'm feeling that I need these records to have something available. Hope they help you, and I'll let you know if I hear of any further progress on the checking. I've ordered more pages to be sent to me, so I'll have more than these initial years soon. Note that Eynesbury records start much earlier than St Neots, and I hope there's less gaps. Hi Jim: I am so jealous. Wish I could have gone with your to St. Neots. My Thomas Palmer who married Mary Preston and had children including William Palmer (his son) Three of William Palmers children were born there. This Thomas Palmer whose father was Thomas from Brampton married Elizabeth Burneby in Pytchley Northampton. (I have some wills, but I cannot find out the father of Mary Preston. Recently a researcher check on this line and back a ways, the wifes Name Elizabeth Burton goes back in the ALEXANDER THE GREAT. (Don't know that I want to be connected to him....but it is interesting, if I could only find Mary Preston's line. Ho folks, We've just returned from a great 3.5 week trip to the UK. I was in the Huntingdon Record Office for 2 partial days during our final week there, and found out some interesting things, also assisted with help from a friend at Eaton Socon. I have many ancestors from in and around Eaton Socon, and if you've been there, or looked at a map, you can see how much interaction there must have been between Eaton Socon (historically Beds, now Hunts) and St Neots/Eynesbury in Hunts. So, I was eager to see what the Record office had on the unfilmed Parish Registers for Eynesbury and St Neots. What I found was quite good news. First, the St Neots register has all been transcribed for baptisms and marriages, checked, and is getting typed up for publication quite soon! Finally. Eynsbury is not so far along as yet, but has been transcribed, although not checked. I'm ordering pages of the transcription copied and sent to me anyway. Hey, its a start. I'll have some pages I did write out myself at the office for you soon. So, for those of you who had ancestors in the border area of Beds/Hunts, like me, you may get answers. That's why I'm sending this to both lists. The very helpful staff person at the office did note that its easy to get transcribers, but hard to get checkers. Wish I lived there. I'd work day and night to get it done. :) I do have a nice B&B to recommend at Eaton Socon for anyone interested. Its reasonable, and about halfway between Bedford and Huntingdon. Jim Bundy
With apologies to anyone to whom I've already corresponded about this, I am interested in any information about a couple who lived in your area in the latter half of the nineteenth century. They are Julia and Henry Only Griffiths. Julia (nee Griffiths) and Henry lived in St. Neots from sometime after 1870, I believe. He was a bishop in the New Connexion Methodist Church and died in St. Neots in 1880. Julia, age 79, was listed as the principal of a ladies school living on Cambridge Street, St. Neots, in the 1891 British census. She died in St. Neots in 1895. For a book chapter or perhaps even a biography, my special interest is Julia Griffiths Crofts. In the late 1840s and early 1850s, she worked in the United States, helping the abolitionist Frederick Douglass publish his newspaper, the North Star. Upon returning to England, she continued anti-slavery work. I am particularly interested in finding letters or other family papers, but the record on Julia and Henry is so sketchy that any clues or recommendations will be most appreciated. I shall be in England later this month and plan on spending several days doing exploratory research in the St. Neots area. Thank you, Frank Fee **************************** Dr. Frank E. Hi I have found a ancestors death certificate and wondered if anyone is researching wiles in Huntingdon in the district of Spaldwick? My william Wiles died aged 70 yrs a labourer on the 20th Aug 1846 at Backham?? it looks like and buried 22nd?? Aug 1846. Is anyone tracing the family or know any information or even if there would be a headstone for the grave still existing? Any information most appreciated or hearing from other descendents many thanks Louise in Oz.
My name is Clive Godson I am interested in the COOPER family from Offord D'Arcy So far I have got back to William COOPER b: 1839 Offord D'Arcy, who married in 1861 to Charlotte Hard b: 1843 Great Paxton
Hi, Hope I am on the right site as the area I want is known as Caxton which apparently spans the borders of Huntingdonshire and Cambridgeshire. Great Gransden = Hunts Little Gransden = Cambs In the 1901 census Joseph Fuller of Great Gransden (lived in a long street, probably a main one as the butcher, the baker, many pubs and the Baptist Chapel and school were in it, but unfortunately, the census taker forgot to name the street - that I can find - No. 1 was a pub - William the 4th). The Baptist Chapel was notated between Nos. 78 and 79 and Joseph lived in No. 81. Can someone give me an idea of the street name please. Also, in this census Joseph is age 31 and an Army Reservist on Furlough and home with his family (wife born Bedford). Can anyone give me an idea of what unit Joseph may have belonged to and why he had no occupation besides being on leave? Were reservists full time soldiers back then? Can anyone claim this family Joseph age 31, Elizabeth age 31, kids Joseph 9, Arthur 5, Frederick 2 and Alfred 1. I believe that Frederick is my uncle's father. On his son's birth certificate Frederick has a middle name of Elijah, and Frederick called his son Frederick Joseph. By backtracking, this would appear to be the only one that 'fits' the bill, not having certificates at this stage. Assuming I have the right one - Frederick Elijah married in Bedford, which means he had gone back to his mother's birth area. He married Gertrude Hickman in 1919. Can anyone help please? Thanks Sue in Australia
I would be grateful if anyone with access to Holywell PRs could see if there is a baptsim forJohn Sampson (Samson?) born c 1784 maybe as late as 1787. I have already got his marriage in 1812. Thank you very much. Sue
Hi, Since the Buckden parish records are only available at the Huntingdon Records Office, I have not been able to find out anything furthur about this Richard HARVEY, born about 1778 in Buckden. In the 1851 Census, Richard (occupation miller) was living with his son Samuel Harvey (born Debden Essex) in Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire. He had another son Richard HARVEY, a miller who was born in Thaxted, Essex about 1810. I have not yet found a marriage or any other children. Would anyone be going to the office in the next couple of weeks that would have time to see if there is a baptism in 1778 for Richard. I would also like to make contact with anyone else researching HARVEY in or near Buckden at this time. Best wishes, Charlotte Edwards

Thanks to David the mystery is solved. Yet another reinforcement, if one be needed, of the superiority of "original" over "transcription". I really should have suspected this, as the birthplace of another of my ancestors, James GOODWIN, also born in Godmanchester, was given in the 1881 transcription as "Getmoor"! ----- Original Message ----- From: "David Cooper" <cooperda@hotmail.com> To: <ENG-HUNTINGDON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, May 23, 2005 1:30 PM Subject: RE: Julia GOODWIN missing from 1881 census > The Goodwin/Goodson mistranscription is then doubly compounded by Hunts > being transcribed as Hants, although in this case looking at the original > it's more understandable! > >>From: "Ron Goodwin" <ron_goodwin@circa1984.com> >>To: ENG-HUNTINGDON-L@rootsweb.com >>Subject: Julia GOODWIN missing from 1881 census >>Date: Mon, 23 May 2005 10:30:05 +0100 >> >>I have a relative, Julia GOODWIN, born 07 Sep 1857 in Godmanchester.
