3. Could SKS please send me a copy of the 1851 Census for a William Wrighton (1) born abt 1814 at Kimbolton, Huntingdon. I dont know his wife's name all I know is he had a son William Smith Wrighton (2) born abt 1841 at Hargrave Northants who was married to Emma born abt 1839 at Pertenhall Beds. On the 1861 census Wrighton was spelt Royton, if that is any help. I dont know whether William (1) from Kimbolton had anymore children. I do realise that there are different counties here, but when you come to William (2) when his children came along they were also in the Huntingdon area (Kimbolton, Stonely) which I have got copies of the census's to. Thank you Regards Gillian

    2. Sue Adamson
    3. Hi Listers, I have queried GARRATT's before when belonging to this list and have made contact with alot of GARRATT searchers. This time i am after something specific. Kate Ellen BAINES dau of Thomas BAINES and Jane POLLARD born 27th March 1872 Uppingham Rutland, married Thomas Weston GARRATT of Yaxley in Peterborough 26th Oct 1896. They lived in Peterborough until at least 1901 and had three children there. Thomas was a career soldier. I know he was in Halifax, Nova Scotia in Sept 1905. A post card was received by his family, telling them that ' we' will be home before Christmas, hopefully. I do not know whether ' we ' means his regiment, or his family of Kate Ellen and children. Kate was on the 1901 census, in Peterborough, with Thomas and children, but then disappears from the face of the earth. In 1920 Thomas re married, Emily Elizabeth FROST nee TEAR. So what happened to Kate Ellen ??. I cannot find a death for her, could they have divorced ?? Any suggestions, help or ideas would be greatly appreciated Sue Adamson Australia

    3. Thanks to Jan and Doug for replies. I am already aware of the WATERNEWTON CULPINS but they do not seem to shelter my Charlotte in their family. The SPALDING family don't fit either as Charlotte stated her father was James and a shoemaker! Which fits with Northhants doesn't it. Of course Charlotte could have been baptised a Nonconformist I realise and also perhaps not ever baptised. Also Charlotte may not have been her baptismal name. Ah well. I won't give up hope altogether. Thanks again Happy Hunting, Maeve and it is dark gloomy and raining here in Ewhurst

    3. Hi Maeve I've had a look at the images and it seems to me that it's pretty consistently Elton Northants, even though Elton is actually in Hunts, and it seems to straddle the county boundary. Have you looked for John Culpin, shoemaker, in Elton? I've just had a look at the 1841 but couldn't see him, but there are other Culpins. I assume that you've been through Elton parish register with no result. Did you also look for John pre 1800? Or other baptisms with a father John? It appears as though Elton records have been extracted to the BVRI where there are numerous Culpins, but there is no trace of Charlotte, nor a marriage or baptism of John. However there seem to be burials in Elton on the NBI of children with no matching baptism on the BVRI (there's no other detail on the NBI but it might be worth checking the parish register to see if parents are named) Could the family have been non-conformist, so the children weren't baptised in the established church? Another possibility is that Charlotte was illegitimate and made up the name John for the sake of propriety. Sorry I can't help give you any postive leads Good luck David > Message du 30/07/05 10:51 > De : "ChrisMaeve" <chrismaeve@onetel.com> > A : ENG-HUNTINGDON-L@rootsweb.com > Copie à : > Objet : Charlotte CULPIN about 1818 > > Hello Listers I'm new here. 3. Hello Listers I'm new here. I wonder if there is anyone out there who can help me. For years and years I have been searching for the baptism of my 2xgt.gt.grandmother Charlotte CULPIN. I have her marriage certificate of 1839 at Coveney, Cambs.to Joseph HIAM. She was of full age and her fathers name is listed as James and he was a shoemaker. From the Coveney census of 1841 to '91 I take her date of birth to be about 1818. Her place of birth is not at all clear, it varies slightly with each census! Always Northants sometimes Easton or Eston or Elton or Elson...... Perhaps in fact she was born over the border in Hunts? I've nearly given up. Charlotte died August 1898 at Wentworth a village near Coveney aged 81. Best Wishes to all. Happy Hunting. Maeve in Ewhurst near the Sussex border.

    1. James BULL & Mary Ann BREWIN, married 1820 at Godmanchester
    2. Dear Listers, I was at Huntingdon Record Office yesterday and checked on the marriage (found on the IGI) of James BULL and Mary Ann BREWIN that took place at St. Mary's Church, Godmanchester, on the 25th of December 1820. Of course, the fathers of the parties were not mentioned, but the witnesses were William LOVELL, 'Mary' (?) 'Farley' (Furley) BULL, James BREWIN, and Mary BAXTER. I strongly suspect that James BREWIN was my GGGG Grandfather; and that Mary Ann BREWIN was my GGG Aunt and a sister of Frances BREWIN, my GGG Grandmother. Does any of this ring bells with anyone? Yours, etc. Geoffrey Woollard in Cambridgeshire.

    3. Would appreciate any information on CHRISTOPHER SMITH and family. He was the father of 1- HARRIET SMITH, born about 1828 in Stow, Huntingdonshire. She married in 1848 at Stow Longa, JOSEPH MARTIN, born 1822 in Great Catworth. 2- ELIZABETH SMITH, born 1832 in Long Stow, Huntingdonshire. She married in 1850 at Great Catworth, HENRY BAKER, born 1823 in Sudborough, Northamptonshire. The only firm information I have on Christopher Smith is that he is listed as the father on both womens marriage certificates, no idea of who his wife was. I believe they had at least one more child also named Christopher but there may be more children. The Martin family and desecendants of the Baker family came to Canada and settled between 1871 and 1905. Thank you Heather Researching Hewitt, Baker, Smith, Martin, Webb, Gunn, Adams

    3. I am hoping someone can help me to find out where William and Frances MAY were buried. I have found references for both on FreeBMD. Frances MAY -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Deaths Jun 1891 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- May Frances 69 St. Ives 3b 226 ______________________________________________ William MAY Deaths Dec 1906 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- May William 88 St. Ives 3b 157 ______________________________________________ Knowing that they had lived in St.Ives for some time I thought they would have been buried there, but I have searched the PRs for St.Ives and neither of them is there. I know they lived in Hemingford Grey for several years in the 1860s and 70s and their children were born there, so perhaps they were buried there. William was a waterman for most of his life and they lived in Wellington Street, St.Ives when the 1891 census was taken. Frances died soon after the census and in 1901 William was living at 'The Stauch' St.Ives where he was the Lock keeper. If anyone has access to the Hemingford Grey burial records, please would they look for these two entries or if anyone else has any further information, I would be very pleased. Many thanks Norma Clare

I would live to know more about them and their descendents if any are still there. I also have family pictures, many unidentified I would love to share. I understood from my grandmother, his second wife that Ernest prospered well and left behind a grocery business and rented cottages. My uncle, also Ernest Thurston who was born in Bournemouth still owned a cottage in Huntingdon until about 1986. Of the sons, Arthur married an Elsie TATMAN and Cecil and Donald married two sisters Vera and Olive DEVONPORT they too could have been from Huntingdon. Thanks for any help Sue Horlock Kryshak.

    3. Thank you Pete and Margaret for your reply. The person I am researching is:- WILLIAM THOMAS BLAKENEY Born 1893 in Margate , Kent Joined navy at age 18, served in 1911 and served until 1922. ( I have his naval record from Kew) He was married , but don't know of his wife, or any children. Lived at Diss in Norfolk before moving to ST Ives. Lived at 12, Station Road, St Ives , for a few years before he died 1961. .He is buried in the borough cemetery, requiem mass at Sacred Heart.( found a memoriam card in a relatives effects) I know of all his family anti-cedents, and siblings. I am trying to find out who he was married to, who his children were, and if possible their descendants too. It is very difficult tracing people since the 1901 census. William or Bill as he was always called, was my mother's brother, there are two others whom I can't trace either. The 'boys' were not good at keeping in touch with their sisters. So none of them , or their descendants have any info . If by looking locally, you can come up with anything about him it would be great and might even lead me to the others. All his generation are dead now of course. I am 70 myself, and it is a long time to wait for the next census to be published. Thank you in advance. Betty
