About a dozen 2C & 3C are researching this line. Working backwards via each of our own parents, we've come to an enormous brick wall, which stops with my 2 x great-grandparents. We'd always known them as Edward Bauld STONE and Mary Elizabeth PHILLIPS born Yaxley, c1823 and 27 September 1824 respectively. Says so on their gravestones! They are in the 1871 through 1901 census' in Canada, as such. In the 1881, Edward's father [Edward STONE] is in the household - age 81, a farmer, born in England. We found them on the Yaxley 1851 census, with their first born son, borders in the household of Mary's father, Thomas PHILLIPS. They are listed under the surname STONE. Unfortunately, Edward is (birthplace) "unkn". Mary and father were born Yaxley. Imagine our surprise when one of the cousins discovered her great-grandfather's birth cert (household possessions), which stated his surname was BALLS [Edward] born 1850 Yaxley. We then found a marriage for Edward BALLS and Mary Elizabeth PHILLIPS, 20 September 1849 Yaxley. Her father is stated as Thomas PHILLIPS, but his father is down as Edward STONE. Another cousin unearthed her great-gf's birth cert (2nd child), which stated his birth was in Whittlesey in 1852. His surname is also BALLS. So we find they are using the STONE surname, but registering the children under BALLS. We've yet to find the 3rd child, Alice born c1854, under either surname with the correct parents. Nor can we properly identify Mary Elizabeth PHILLIPS with the correct mother. There were 2 Thomas PHILLIPS' who had daughters born around the same time, in Yaxley, with the forename Mary. The family arrived in Halifax County Nova Scotia c1855. No passenger list, so far located, has them under either surname. All successive children were born in Halifax Co. NS and nearly the whole family (7sons & 2 daughters) is well documented from that time on. In a 1948 newspaper item, 92 year old son John states "my family came from Yorkshire". We are still stuck in Hunts, looking for leads, which so far don't go in any direction. Fourth son, Benjamin STONE (1858-1941) married (c1883 Halifax) Sarah Louisa DAVENPORT (c1864-1932). For a short time they resided in Clarkston & Spokane Washington. Then lived in Riverside California for 60 years, where both died childless. A niece, Margaret Ellis STONE (24 Feb 1883 Dartmouth NS - 1 Dec 1965 San Diego) wife of G. D, ERVIN; daughter of 2nd son Robert STONE and Margaret MCKENZIE was living in Pacific Beach, in 1941. Oldest daughter Alice [BALLS] STONE (c1854-1942) married (c1882) James E. KERR (c1855-1922). They lived first in Millbank South Dakota, then Spokane Washington. One son James A. KERR (unkn BMD). Sixth son, Charles STONE (c1866-?) first lived in Windum Minnesota, later thought to have gone to Idaho or perhaps Utah. Nothing more is known regarding him. Second daughter Rebecca STONE is 18 years old in 1881 census. Whilst all the others are mentioned in Edward Bauld STONE;s (BALLS') probate records of May 1903, Rebecca is not. We can find no death nor marriage records for her. The other sons remained in Nova Scotia (Halifax, Oxford & Cumberland Counties), with their escendants now scattered throughout Canada & the USA, although the majority are still in Nova Scotia. Any connections? Toni ~ Ontario
Yes, Hunts is a small county, and that I think is the reason. The number of postings per month is reasonably constant (but if it weren't for Jim Bundy and his invaluable Eaton Socon transcripts the numbers would look pretty sick some months!) And it's the holiday season (or was since schools seem to have gone back) Perhaps Rootschat has taken some of the trade? Hello People, I'm researching Thomas BECK, b. abt 1785, m. Sarah PICKER in 1807 in St. Ives. I'm looking for any information that will help me discover their parents or any other family members. There are three other BECK families in St. Ives around that time: James Beck, Robert Beck and John Beck. I would like to try and find out if these families are of any relation to my Thomas Beck family. Are these gentlemen familiar to anyone? Thank you Kathy Irwin Odessa, TX USA condor@texasonline.net kathy1619@yahoo.com
William F Cooke was Born in Huntingdonshire, I would like to know if there is census for 1841 and 1831 for Huntindonshire. If there is can some one look him up for me and his household. I do not know who his parents were, but the 1851 census says he was born in Huntindonshire and by then was living in bedfordshire. He was born in 1813 and Married in Bedfordshire in 1833 to a Frances (Fannie) Warden. I sure would love to find out who his and her parents were. If any one else is working on this same line and has information please email me. Thank you for any help lended. Silvers
Probably a combination of the fine weather here in the UK and the school summer holidays, the latter are just ending. A number of other lists are similarly quiet. As to Huntingdonshire names: CADWELL, David, bap 11 May 1828 in Great Paxton, second son of John and Elizabeth - I don't have their marriage yet. David married Emily MIDDLETON (b 1824-5 in Buckden, father Samuel) on 5 Jun 1848 in Buckden. The Cadwells seem to have some association with Willian and Ann FLANDERS, 2 of the children of John & Elizabeth are with them in Eaton Socon in Bedfordshire in 1841 and another bears the name William Flanders CADWELL. Like Phoebe I had been hoping to see some reaction to my request of 25th Aug. at least to see my original email on the screen, but no!. The subject line read:- CULPIN at Stanground, St. John Baptist. What do I do next? I'm new to this list, perhaps there is some procedure that I am not aware of? Hopefully Maeve in Ewhurst, Surrey

David & Phoebe, I've been on this list for about 5 years and it has always been a quiet one. Perhaps due, as you said David, to Hunts being a rather small [and less populated] county. Over time, I think it's boundaries may have changed more drastically than some others as well. It often appears to me, that most of the researchers' ancestors came from the larger centres, and not so much the 'countryside'. I've scant info on mine, who came from Yaxley. Rarely do I see anyone asking about that village. It would indeed be nice Phoebe, if we were all related, but I'm beginning to think my lot were transplants from other counties. We know one was for sure. I too will send my info separately. Here in Ontario Canada, the children go back to school on Tuesday. Toni

Dear Hunts Listers, The county is small, but I believe another reason this list tends to be so quiet is the lack of easy public access to the parish records. Yes the Hunts FHS has produced some, but there is still a LONG way to go to have them all trnascribed and published, and even then, I doubt the miscellaneous types of records, those other than baptisms, marriages, and burials, will ever get published in my lifetime. :) I'd dearly love to have easy access to St Neots and Eynesbury, where mine moved, back and forth to/from Eaton Socon just across the River Great Ouse. Hello again. Can anyone tell me where to start looking for Bastardy Orders in Hunts, c. 1883, in the Peterborough area? Thanks, Phoebe
Hello. Can anyone help me with these initials? Woodstone USD is given as my grandfather's birthplace in 1883. It probably has some connection to the Poor Laws, perhaps representing a maternity home for unmarried women. Phoebe
Hello from Melbourne. Is anyone researching this family? An Edis Sharman (b. 1837 in Hunts) in my mother's family was descended from Mary Edis (b. 1775 in Hunts), and Edis also occurs as a given name in Crowland, Lincs, from 1864 - in this case an Edis Cherrington. It's an unusual name and I'm pursuing the possibility of family ties between the two. The geographical area involved crosses couunty boundaries but is very small. Phoebe
Hello Everyone This is not directly relevant to the original message, but just in case it rings any bells of interest with anyone i thought i'd share it in my Tree I have 2 people with the Christian name of Edis. There surname was FITZJOHN and they were father and son, baptised in Whittlesey, Cambs, in 1753 and 1787 respectively. They are connected to my ANKER ancestors which is how i've come across them Regards David Anker Hello from Melbourne. Is anyone researching this family? It depends whereabouts in Peterborough! as its a nightmare depending on where you ancestor lived in the city. Woodston, Stanground, and Fletton were in Hunts, the rest in Northants. I am off to the Record office in Huntingdon in a couple of weeks and if you want me look anything up and I have enough time. I also have access to the census from 1861 - 1902 so if you want anything looking up just let me know Karen Peterborough UK
Hi I think the USD is urban sub district, Woodston is very close to Peterborough. Karen Peterborough
This page contains an important entry for my own family, namely the nomination of John Paton of Meadowhead as Elder. Peiter Dunlope may be related also. BTW, as I'm currently working on earlier pages, it seems that the term "enemie" here refers to doing business with someone not affiliated with the church (unbeliever?). But, I still don't understand the widespread cases of "taking something from the nybor/myther". Something strange was going on in these times.
