    1. ANYONE WANT A LOOK UP IN RECORD OFFICE IN HUNTINGDON - please
    2. Charlotte Edwards
    3. Dear Karen, I would be so grateful if you could have a quick look and see if there is a baptism for Richard Harvey, occupation miller, living in Hertfordshire with his son in the 1851 census. Richard Harvey is 73 years old and born in Buckden, Hunts. so born approx 1778. Richard died in Dec 1851, giving the age of 73. The first son that I have found is born in Essex abt 1810. I have found the Buckden church record on Genuki as given below. I have no access at my family history centre, so would appreciate a lookup. Thanks again, Charlotte Edwards Vancouver, B.C. 3. Hi Silvers 1841 Bedford HO107/010-07 folio 14A Ram Yard, Bedford St Paul William Cook 25 shoemaker Not born in Beds Fanny Cook 30 Not born in Beds John Cook 5 Born in Beds William Cook 5 Born in Beds Robert Cook infant born in Beds As you can see the 1841 is of far less use than the 1851, with birthplaces not given, merely whether or not they were born in the county; and ages ages over 15 were rounded down to the nearest 5 below, so 25 could have been between 25 and 29, and 30 between 30 and 34. As suspected the 1841 doesn't add much to what was in the 1851 as neither set of parents were living with William and Fanny, although another son has been added. As mentioned off board the Pedigree Resource File has this family on two separate submissions which give William's parents as James and Sarah, although this needs to be checked with the parish register (I've taken the liberty of asking Karen who has just offered to do look ups at the Record Office next week to look for William's baptism). But I cannot see this couple in St Neots in 1841, nor is there a James on the National Burial Index as having been buried in St Neots, so either they moved away from St Neots or the Pedigree Resource File information is incorrect. Let's see what Karen finds. 1. ANYONE WANT A LOOK UP IN RECORD OFFICE IN HUNTINGDON
    2. Hi Everyone, I am off to the record office in Huntingdon again next week, I intend to be there the whole day, and I normally have a couple of hours free while I am there, so if any one out there would like me to look anything up for them in the parish registers please let me know. If you do want me to do a look up for you, please let me know the parish, rough dates, and names and whether is it a Baptism, marriage or burial. Some of the registers are transcribed and others are not, if the register is transcribed its pretty easy to do :-) I will do it on a first come first served basis to make it fair. I am currently thinking of doing a one name study for Huntingdonshire of the name BRANSON and its variants so if you have any in your tree please pass them on to me. 3. Would anyone have an idea where I might find a grave for someone dying in Woodhurst? My John CARTER and presumably his wife Mary (nee CLARK) died there, somewhere between 1871 and 1901. Not very date specific, I know. Sorry! I am visiting in less than 3 weeks and would love to be able to visit the grave, if it is still where it is, as John was my great great grandfather. Many thanks Sonja Queensland, Australia.

    3. Thanks for the email Phoebe; My “Harlock” is one Eliza Jane, b approx 1833 Ramsey, who married William KILBY, date unknown as yet. Eliza is believed to have died in 1900, 21 January. William & Eliza had George 1863,Charles 1867, James 1868, Sarah Jane 1871 and Frederick 1873. Years are approximate. I have no idea of the names of Eliza’s parents nor siblings at this stage. Would love to hear if you ever establish a connection. Surely HARLOCK is none too common a name. Warm regards Sonja Queensland, Australia.

    3. re Harlocks. My maiden name is Horlock but in my extended family we have Harlocks and Horlicks. some of my Horlocks left Dorset for Australia and changed their spelling from Horlock to Harlock. My Horlocks were born in Dorset from the 1500's to this time and before that they were in Devon. I'd be happy to share info with any interested persons. Sue Horlock Kryshak.

    3. The full 1851 entry HO107/1751 folio 574 Balshall St, Bedford St Peter William Cook head marr 38 bootmaker born Hunts St Neots Fanny Cook wife 40 shoe binder? b Northants Weedon William Cook son 14 errand boy b Bedford Robert Cook 9 scholar b Bedford Nah Naphi??? Cook son 5 scholar b Bedford Fanny Cook dau 1 scholar b Bedford So in 1841 he was in Bedford, which is a big unindexed town! I'll check it out later today and see if I can find them. But even if I do it's unlikely to help with their parents. But at least now you have their birthplaces. I don't know what's available in Northants but I know that for St Neots the parish registers have not been filmed nor have the baptisms been transcribed by Hunts FHS, so it means either a trip to Huntingdon Record Office, or paying them to do a look up for his 1812/13 baptism for you - I have found them to very helpful and their charges are reasonable. There are a couple of entries on the IGI indicating that a William Cooke was a member of the Church of LDS and that he was born at St Neots on 24 Jan 1813, but no parents are mentioned. Were the family Mormons? I'll be back Regards David > Message du 04/09/05 17:57 > De : SilentSilvers@aol.com > A : ENG-HUNTINGDON-L@rootsweb.com > Copie à : > Objet : Researching in Huntingdonshire pre- 1851 > > William F Cooke was Born in Huntingdonshire, I would like to know if there is > census for 1841 and 1831 for Huntindonshire. 3. Good! There are people out there! I'm delighted to see the responses. I don't think that the school holidays are much of a factor, because (a) the Lincs list has been really humming throughout the same period and (b) these lists are global, not local. But the comment about the difficulty of access to records is very likely to explain the milk in the coconut, as my mother used to say. Anyway, it's been really interesting to read all the different views: thank you all. Perhaps I should tell the story of how my interest in the area was reawakened after some years. It may be relevant to someone out there. After a year of deep mourning for my mother I started to feel capable of research again and decided to return to her father's roots in Lincs. His stepfather's funeral at Crowland Abbey was attended by a crowd including Mr Edis Cherrington; his mother's funeral (ditto) was attended by a Mr E. Sharman. As both Edis and Sharman are in my mother's mother's line and her parents met in Tasmania, not in England, I wondered whether there was some family connection that they may not have known about when they met. Crowland is very close to Yaxley, one of the ancestral villages of Grandma's side. Mum told me once that her parents argued over whose aunt was in a family photo: Anne Hard, or Hardy, presumably born in Peterborough, Northants, maiden name unknown, was claimed by both of them. She went to live in America at some time in the C19 but visited her sister Betsy Reed in Crowland c. 1890. The story may be a bit of imagination but it may not.... Grandpa's grandfather William Reed appears on the IGI as christened in Crowland and married in Glatton, Hunts to an Elizabeth Harlock. This can't be Granny Betsy Reed (and I think it is the right William Reed, so it's probably one of those IGI false links) - but there are Harlocks in that area in my grandmother's tree. I'd just love to find that my maternal grandparents were related, so if anyone has any connections to this story I'd be delighted to hear from them. I've got quite a bit to share. Here are the relevant names, dates and places. William George REED b. 1883 Woodston, Hunts; d. 1966 Melbourne: my grandfather. Emma REED b. 1863 Crowland, Lincs; d. 1943 Crowland. Grandpa's mother. George PEPPER b. 1853 Crowland ;. d. 1936 Crowland. Grandpa's stepfather. Elizabeth (Betsy) unknown b. 1833 Peterboro, Northants. Married William REED; mother of Emma REED. William REED b. [1828] Crowland; d. 1884 Crowland. Father of Emma REED. Edis CHERRINGTON b. [1864] Crowland - attended funeral in 1936. E. SHARMAN - no details - attended funeral in 1943. George SHARMAN b. 1798 Yaxley or Holme, Hunts; d. 1867 Tasmania. Mary ELLINGTON b. 1809 Hunts; d. 1891 Tasmania. M. George SHARMAN; my grandmother's greatgrandmother. Mary EDIS b. 1775 Hunts. Married John SHERMAN/SHARMAN 1793, Hunts. Elizabeth HARLOCK - no details - m. George SHERMAN/SHARMAN 1749, Hunts. Parents of John Sherman. George was "of Elton and Yaxley". A very small circle on a map takes in all these places, and remembering that Thomas Hardy's "Tess of the Durbervilles" walked 30 miles in one day and noted only that she should allow herself a full day for the trip reminds us that the C19 concept of distance in England was not as restrictive as genealogists often think it was. 3. Hi all, Although we joined the list recently, we must have deleted some of the messages as the subject line isn't prefixed with [ENG-HUNT] or similar designation - all the other lists we've tried seem to do that and we find it a useful identifier. So we no doubt deleted the non-prefixed messages thinking they may be spam and wondered if anyone else has done the same? - it might be a contributory factor to a quiet list perhaps? Anyway, our main interests are on our PRIOR (to early 1700's) and AMPS (to early 1600's) families and we'd be pleased to hear from anyone who has related information. Best wishes, Paul & Lesley Derby UK -----Original Message----- From: Phoebe [mailto:fcutting@alphalink.com.au] Sent: 04 September 2005 09:37 To: ENG-HUNTINGDON-L@rootsweb.com Subject: thank you for help on Woodston, bastardy orders and EDIS This is a general thank you, before I reply individually, for the help I've received on the above topics. It proved that the list wasn't asleep, too! I've been on it before and found it very quiet, as it is at present - does anyone have any theories about why this is so? Is it because Hunts is so tiny? If that's it, perhaps we're all related. Now that could be fun! So I'll send another message, with all my names, and see what that turns up. All the best, Phoebe

The "probably" category is for wives: my cousin who traced the family back to 1594 is "not interested in genealogy" (!!!) and hasn't noted wives' parishes of origin, so I've put them here as "prob" from their husbands' parishes. Any rellies out there? Phoebe

    3. Hello Hunts. listers, Good to hear from you. As suggested I will repeat my original message as on 25th August;- CULPIN at Stanground, St. John the Baptist. Is there anyone who might have access to the above parish records? I have been given pages of the CULPIN name for Hunts. N'hants,Rutland, Cambs ......that general area, and there is a JAMES listed for 21 Oct. 1794. Those are the only details, no age or reason for entry. This might, just might be the father of my lost 2gt. grandmother Charlotte. I am now grabbing at straws. No, I don't know where the kind person who gave me these three pages of names got them from. Yes, I know, black mark. Alex, I will contact Hunts Record Office or Peterborough as you suggest. Thanks everyone for your replies, feel really heartened now! Maeve

Elizabeth married Jonathan FORDHAM in 1814 in Wyddial Hertfordshire. I am trying to find out who Elizabeth's parents were. I haven't been able to find her in 1861. Her husband died in 1841. I do hope someone will be able to help. Many thanks Jean
