    1. Warboys PR look up please
    2. Fiona Davis
    3. Hello everyone, My gg grandfather is listed in the 1881 and subsequent censuses as being born in Warboys in 1852. I can't find any record of him prior to 1874, which is when he married. His name is John Chapman Cox and if there's anyone who could see if his birth is listed in the Parish Registers for Warboys I'd be very grateful. Thanks, Fiona --------------------------------- How much free photo storage do you get? Store your holiday snaps for FREE with Yahoo! Photos. Get Yahoo! Photos

    1. Thomas HALL 1741 - article
    2. I have subscribed just to post this message. I came across this article in a book of bound magazines called The Captain and published in 1903, and wondered if it might be of interest to anyone. I have no idea of the truth of it! I hope I have posted to the correct list, please let me know off list if not so I can correctly post, and apologies if so. Carol The Fat Boy Perhaps an account of the Fat Boy, who lived in Willingham years ago, would interest readers of The Captain. This wonderful boy was born on October 31st, 1741, and was of an extraordinary size for his age. He did not become well-known outside the village until a surgeon, Mr. DAWKES, of St. Ives, Hunts, examined and measured him upon hearing about him. The surgeon went to see the boy, who was named THOMAS HALL, when the youthful wonder was two years and ten months old. These were his measurements. Height, 3 ft. 8½ ins.; neck 14 1-5 ins.; waist, 23 1-5 ins.; thickest part of thigh, 14 3-10 ins.; his weight in his clothes was 4 st. 2 lbs. He was extremely strong. Mr. DAWKES saw him take up, and throw from him quite easily, a blacksmith's hammer weighing 17 lbs. The parents said that he went to school with other children, and if a boy made him angry, he did not fight him with his fists, but collared the offender and dashed him to the ground by sheer strength. He served boys three times as old as himself in this manner. His voice was like a man's, and his brain power was equal to that of a boy years older. Mr. Thomas HALL, his father, was a small man, and Mrs. HALL, his mother, was of middle size. The boy did not live many years, but died on September 3rd, 1747. Some of the inhabitants proposed that a monumental stone should be erected in memory of him, so one was placed over his grave, with an inscription in Latin on it. The following is a translation:- Stop traveller, and, wondering, know Here buried lie the remains of THOMAS the son of Thomas and Margaret, HALL; who not one year old, had the signs of manhood; not three, was almost four feet high; Endowed with uncommon strength, a just proportion of parts, and a stupendous voice: before six Died, as it were, of an advanced age. He was born in this village Oct. xxxi., mdccxli, and in the same departed this live Sept. iii., mdccxlvii. EDWIN L. READ

    3. Hi, I am looking for the birth of Elizabeth ANNIX/ANNIS abt 1788 - 1792 somewhere in Huntingdon. Elizabeth ANNIX (spinster) married John WHITE (widower) on Jan 18, 1813 Willingham. I cannot find any ANNIX families in Willingham. After checking many Cambridge PR's, it was suggested that Huntingdon might be her birthplace. I am hoping someone would please lookup ANNIS/ANNIX births in areas close to Willingham. Thank you, Michele Ontario, CANADA

    3. Hi Wendy Burt/Birt/Boat. Does it matter? It’s spelt however the scribe thought it was spelt, or what he thought he heard, as doubtless the Burts themselves were illiterate in common with most of the population. Try saying Boat or Burt with a broad yokel accent and they may not sound too much different. The Christian name “Baxter” is a bit of a give away though, so I don’t think you need have too many fears about the spelling change. Pre 1754 marriage entries in parish registers are unlikely to have anything more than the names of the two protagonists, with possibly their parish if one or other was not from the parish where they were being married. Names of fathers were not included in a marriage entry until 1837 with the introduction of civil registration. Between these two dates you get the bride and groom plus the names of two witnesses. I'm seen any number of families with both an Elizabeth and an Eliza. It is clear to me that they were regarded as completely separate names. With regard to the original query, I've occasionally seen families where a name was reused after a father remarried. Presumably, for the second wife, her step-children "didn't count". 3. There is a German royal or princely family (Reuss) where all the sons are named Heinrich (Henry) and are numbered in each generation. Imagine being Heinrich XXX. In English parish records one usually can find the burial record for the first child of that name before the baptism of the second. That said, one ancestral family had an Elizabeth (1826), another Elizabeth (1829), and an Eliza (1830) baptised. Eliza is my great-grandmother, and I expected to find the burial records for both her sisters named Elizabeth. The first Elizabeth died in September 1828, but the second Elizabeth married in 1854, and died some time between the 1891 and 1901 census returns. ----- Original Message ----- From: A. 3. Hi Karen Wonder if you could please look for Charles Mason His daughter Alice was born at Paxton Huntingdon April 26 1850. She was the daughter of Charles Mason, coachman and Susan Bond, who were married at St Pancras, London, Middlesex Sept 30 1844. Thank you so much.... Pat (in Whitby Ontario) PS I'm not absolutely certain that the above Charles and Susan were her parents, (taken from the IGI) Charles was her father's name though. He was a Veterinary surgeon at the time of Alice's marriage to Frederick Bottomley in Lanc. ______________________________

    3. Hi Listers, Re today's discussion of Murfins, I took a quick look searching for "mur" in my baptisms starting in 1813, and didn't find any till 1837. When I was at Eaton Socon in June, I had a discussion about this with a local expert, who pointed out that especially in the northern part of the parish, it could have been closer to walk to the St Neots parish church with an infant than the Eaton Socon church, so the baptism may well have taken place there. Even Eynesbury isn't that far away. Having spent some hours at the Huntingdon Record Office, it seems that St Neots baptisms have been transcribed and checked, but for whatever reason, hasn't been published yet! However, I do know that you can request and purchase copies of pages of the transcription from the Record Office, as I've done so for my Bundys. Eynesbury has been transcribed, but not checked yet. You'll notice every once in a while in my Eaton Socon transcription that clergy from St Neots and Eynesbury performed Baptisms at Eaton Socon. Peter is certainly correct re the IGI in Huntingdonshire, as the LDS was not allowed to film much of anything in that county. :( Jim Bundy (with credit card in hand waiting to give money to the Hunts FHS for any and all St Neots or Eynesbury materials) Page 192 When Baptised (year) Month Day Child's Christian Name Son of / Daughter of Parents Name Surname Abode Quality, Trade, or Profession By
