Hi Yvonne In 1841 HO107/452-03 folio 5B Cates Cabin, Chesterton John Watts 55 Inn keeper Elizabeth Watts 60 George Watts 20 All born in county None of his elusive brothers were in Chesterton that I could see. David - Thank you so very much for all that information on the Thompson -Townsend family. Now I think I have all the children. Had been told there were 17 but 2 died, and now I believe it. I thought Warboys was a village (printed a picture from the web) but what is Tick Fen--a neighborhood section of Warboys or another village? I have a photo of Charles's public house in Warboys, and in 1881 it is also their dwellingplace. I would like to take you up on the offer to check 1841 census to see if Thomas and Ann were established in Tick Fen right after marriage. Interesting that in 1851 (Lancs.) the next house held Mary Thompson, widow. Now I speculate whether this is Ann's mother who moved with the family, or had lived there all along. The 1836 marriage information from the Index is great to get, and now would like to find out if a record exists that gives their parents' names. I'm not sure there were such records unless at a church, in 1836. Who could tell me...the Hunts record office? Please advise. Thanks for all your help. It really has made my week! Priscilla Scudder
Hello all, I am trying to find my ancestors. I know that my great great great grandfather, Thomas Henry Shell (a tailor, born circa 1821 Wells, Somerset) married my great great great grandmother, Lucy Mackaness born circa 1819 on 25th April 1842 in St Neots registry office. Both are listed as residing in Kimbolton at the date of their marriage, and their fathers are listed as George Shell a baptist minister and William Mackaness a labourer. I also know that my great great grandfather George Shell was born on 19th February 1842 at Stonely, Kimbolton. I am looking to find out something about Thomas Henry Shell and Lucy Mackaness including thier other family members, and wondered whether anybody had access to the 1841 census records and could take a look for me. Thanks Peter

Hi Jean Why is it that people always seem to die a year or so before the 1851 census where a birthplace is given? Most inconsiderate of them. The John christened 1780 in Clifton was the son of John and Jane Cherry. There was a burial in Clifton on 25 Feb 1780 of John Cherry of Campton, followed by 14 July 1782 of Jane Cherry widow. So that particular John appears to have been orphaned at the age of two. I cannot see a burial that is obviously him. So what became of him? My ancestors were also from Clifton and the surrounding villages but if they moved to the next village that was as far as they went at that time. Its always easier to prove who it couldnt have been than to prove who it was! There was a John Cherry married in Wilstead/Wilshamstead, which is not far from Clifton, in 1802 who wasnt christened in that parish. It might be interesting to see if the marriage entry states which parish he was from. Try posting on the Beds lookup request board on www.rootschat.com where I know there are people with the Wilstead parish register. If you are a believer in naming patterns then Johns first son was William, and there wasnt a Jane to be seen amongst his numerous daughters, which is perhaps a pointer that it wasnt the Clifton John. Did any of the Clifton Johns grandparents leave a will which might have named him? Check with the Record Office in Bedford at archive@bedscc.gov.uk to see if they did leave wills. Diddington is closer to Northamptonshire than it is to Clifton, and IGI entries for that county are pretty sparse so it might be that he was from there. But without any baptism index its difficult to prove. You might try a request on the rootschat look up board for Northants to see if there were any Cherry marriages in the east of the county say 1765 -1780 there is a marriage index. If there were any marriages it might give you a better idea where to look for Johns baptism. Youve done the obvious things with no success I think you are in good company here as other researchers from Australia and the USA dont seem to know where John was from either, judging by the trees on various online sites which all stop with John 1780. This is all fairly negative, but you might get lucky! But I think that the Clifton John is a big leap of faith without something more concrete. Hope this helps Regards David --------------------------------- Nouveau : téléphonez moins cher avec Yahoo! Messenger ! Dear listers I have a John CHERRY who was buried in Diddington HUN 7th Jan 1847. He seems to have had 2 wives, (1) Mary EAT in 1804 and (2) Sarah CAVILLER in 1826. He was said to have been 67 years old when he died which puts him as being born circa 1780. The 1841 census says he wasn't born in the county. My question is how can I find out where John CHERRY came from. I have tried to look for a settlement prior to his first marriage in 1804 but the film I ordered from the LDS was very sparse and nothing was there. The name CHERRY is fairly common in the adjoining counties of Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire and there may be a candidate in Bedfordshire from Clifton but how can I prove it ? This particular John Cherry in Clifton seems to have had a father who died while the son was fairly young so that may have been a reason to find work elsewhere, Any suggestions welcome as I have been at a standstill for the last couple of years. Best wishes Jean
