    1. Maddison and Chapman Folksworth and Haddon
    2. Hello, new to the list and posting my interests. I am looking for the MADDISON family centring on Haddon in Huntingdon, particularly the family of James MADDISON born 1813. However, I am keen to trade information on any branch of the Maddison family from this area. Similarly, I am looking for the CHAPMAN family of Folksworth. Sarah CHAPMAN born 1813 in Folksworth and possibly an elder sister Mary (WEBSTER). Sarah CHAPMAN married James MADDISON and they had eight known children so there must be someone out there! One of their children moved north to Yorkshire after accidentally shooting a gamekeeper so my research interests moved north with him. Have lots of info, photos and physical peculiarities to share if there are fellow researchers. Elaine Saunders

    1. Looking for someone who lives in/near Wistow, HUNTS
    2. Kurt Cowling
    3. Hi, I'm looking for someone who lives in or near Wistow, HUNTS to help me do some initial research on a farm near there. On an OS map from the 1880's there is a building identified as "Cowling's Barn". It is located on Bridge Street, east of Wistow, between Hill Rd. and the B1040, on the north side of the street. A recent look at an arial view (from villiages.co.uk) shows that there still is a building (or several) on that site. I'm wondering if this is still called "Cowling's barn/farm" and any info on who lives there now or in the past. Even a mailing address so I could contact the present occupants would be great. Thank you, Kurt Cowling

    1. So you think youy working conditions are bad
    2. Martin Edwards
    3. These were the (genuine - supposedly) regulations for a Burnley cotton Mill office in 1852 OFFICE STAFF PRACTICES 1. Godliness, Cleanliness and Punctuality are the necessities of good business. 2. This firm has reduced the hours of work, and the Clerical Staff will now only have to be present between the hours of 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. on weekdays. 3. Daily Prayers will be held each morning in the Main Office. The Clerical Staff will be present. 4. Clothing must be of a sober nature. The Clerical Staff will not disport themselves in raiment of bright colours, nor will they wear hose, unless in good repair. 5. Overshoes and top-coats may not be worn in the office, but neck scarves and headwear may be worn in inclement weather. 6. A stove is provided for the benefit of the Clerical Staff. Coal and Wood must be kept in the locker. It is recommended that each member of the Clerical Staff bring 4 pounds of coal each day during cold weather. 7. No member of the Clerical Staff may leave the room without permission from Mr Rogers. The calls of nature are permitted and Clerical Staff may use the garden below the second gate. This area must be kept in good order. 8. No talking is allowed during business hours. 9. The craving of tobacco, wines or spirits is a human weakness and, as such, is forbidden to all members of the Clerical Staff. 10. Now that the hours of business have been drastically reduced, the partaking of food is allowed between 11.30 a.m. and noon but work will not, on any account cease. 11. Members of the Clerical Staff will provide their own pens. A new sharpener is available, on application to Mr Rogers. 12. Mr Rogers will nominate a Senior Clerk to be responsible for the cleanliness of the Main Office and the Private Office and all Boys and Juniors will report to him 40 minutes before Prayers and will remain after closing hours for similar work. Brushes, Brooms, Scrubbers and Soap are provided by the owners. 13. The New Increased Weekly Wages are as hereunder detailed: Junior Boys (to II years) l/4d = Ca 10 c Boys (to 14 years) 2/ld = Ca 15 c Juniors 4/8d = Ca 35 c Junior Clerks 8/7 = Ca 70 c Clerks 10/9d = Ca 90 c Senior Clerks (after 15 years with owners) 21/-d = Ca $2.00 The owners recognize the generosity of the new Labour Laws but will expect a great rise in output of work to compensate for these near Utopian conditions.

    3. Hello Listers, I am looking for a Mary Gorham who I believe married William SEWELL at Yaxley in 1828, I've not got the exact date. I know there were GORHAMs in Yaxley in the 1841 and 1851 census. I am not sure if she would be related to them since I haven't got a record of her baptism. I would be very interested if anyone has any further information about the family. Best Wishes, Jo Hopkin ( in Scotland )
