    1. NORTH at St Neots Workhouse 1851
    2. Ray Brindle
    3. Hello, fellow addicts. I'm tracking back from a man called Ted North who died in Bendigo, Victoria, in 1950. By good luck (or perhaps brilliant research), I have got to his grandparents, Thomas and Mary North, who were at the St Neots Workhouse on the day of the 1851 census. Tom was born in Buckden around 1815. Mary nee Darlar/Darler/Darlow was born in Odell, Beds., around 1825. They had two boys, William (6) and George (4), both born in Offord Darcy. (If anyone has any info about these people, or would like to ask about their subsequent line, I'd be glad to hear from you. ) Now, the interesting thing is that the Norths went off to Australia in April 1852 on the Lady McDonald - as unassisted migrants. It is unlikely that Tom could have found the 20-30 pounds for the fare in that short time, so I presume that the Poor Law Union or some other charity footed the bill. I'd appreciate information that might explain this, and especially any clues as to how I might get to records for Tom at the Workhouse and why he was there. Was there by any chance a "job lot" of St Neots people who were among the 420 passengers on that ship? Ray May your ancestors be kind to you. Ray Brindle Central Vic., Australia

    3. Hi Ray: I too would like to know how to find some information about my Palmers in the St. Neots Workhouse. Where would I find records of William and Sophia Palmer married in Newton Bromswold in 1789. One of their children was released from the St. Neots Workhouse but that is all of the information that I can find. 1. Anglican church office definitions
    2. Jim Bundy
    3. Hi Listers, I just want to thank Janet for the following. I had another helpful suggestion too re the Anglican church website (thanks Jill). Would it be useful to post these definitions somewhere, as the terms are always occurring when I (and others I'm sure)look at older records? Jim Bundy Just found my pocket guide to the Anglican Church and in answer to your questions, Rector: In some parishes the parish priest is called the Rector. His predecessors received the revenues of the parish known as tithes which made up the income of the priest. Vicar: In some parishes the parish priest is called the Vicar. Before reformation many parishes belonged to monasteries. The monastery received the revenues of the parish and paid a priest to look after the spiritual needs of the parish on its behalf. Such a priest was called a vicar. Today a clergyman is paid from a central fund, so the difference between a Rector and Vicar has no significance. Curate: A clergyman who assists a Rector or Vicar in a parish. Formerly the title referred to any clergyman who had charge ('cure') of a parish. Officiating Minister: Any ordained priest/curate can officiate at Holy Communion Churchwardens: There are usually two Churchwardens. These are elected each year at the Easter Vestry. The Churchwardens are not officers of the Bishop; their main duties are to oversee the finances of the Church and to care for its fabric and furnishings. Hope this helps regards Janet

    1. Border change confusion
    2. Zara Baxter
    3. Hiya folks I've been trying to find records of a Sarah (Ann) BUFF. I tried FreeBMD (which records her marriage in 3rd Q 1873 to John BAXTER) and I've looked for any BUFF births in the period march 1851- dec 1854. I found three BUFF births recorded in Peterborough - Christiana BUFF (Dec Q 1854), (smudged) Elizabeth BUFF (June Q 1851) and Charlotte BUFF (sept Q 1852). One quarters records was smudged so much that I couldn't tell if any female BUFFs had been born, and another looked like that section of the original had rotted or torn, as the edge had gone completely (along with any BUFFs that may have been on it). It seems like a law of genealogical research that your most vital record will be on the bit someone spilled ink on, eh? Anyway. I checked the 1881 census, just to see where the the BUFFs had gone - all bar Sarah had recorded their birthplace as Whaplode, Lincolnshire, or nearby. (hers was recorded as Lutton, Nth) Were parts of Peterborough district in Lincolnshire in the 1850s? I checked the parts of the 1851 Census that my local genealogical society had (precious little, alas) and found references to BUFFs living in Farcet and in the "minster precincts" (??), which I'm guessing is part of Peterborough itself? Most of the BUFFs I've found around Lutton and Huntingdonshire (from Huntingdonshire FHS 1851 census, 1871, 1891, index to 1881) have been lone BUFFs, probably traveled from place of birth to work. My GUESS is that the family that Sarah is part of are from Lincolnshire, but I'm not sure where the borders lay for the period 1850-1890. Genuki is a bit helpful, but it's very confusing =/ Zara

The parents are listed as Matthew CAMPLIN and Mahala WEST. Is anyone able to "look up" the 1861 census for Yaxley to see if they were still there, as I have been unable to locate them on earlier ones. The whole family is very elusive and I have struggled to get this far along this line. Any help with these names would be much appreciated, no matter how small as I really am stuck with these people.
