Hi Janet I couldn't read it either. I also checked the 1861 census and the only one that fitted was born in Essex. On FreeBDM there is a Thomas PEGRAM born Jun 1843 in Ongar wich is in Essex. I wondered if the 1871 is incorrect? I am a new lister and this is my first post. I have a Thomas Pegram who was born c1839 in Hertfordshire. I know that his father's name was James Pegram, a labourer. Thomas appears on the 1871 census. He is married to a lady named Mary Ann, and had a son, Thomas, age 7, and a baby daugher Jeanette Mary. On that census page, the birthplace for Thomas Pegram born c1839 is unreadable. Surrounding census details are clear as day. Can anyone who has access to ancestry.com go to that page and see if you have any ideas, Thomas Pegram is down as 32 years old. It might say Thos. instead of Thomas. Ancestry has guessed the Hertfordshire birthplace as "Werneatts", but this doesn't correspond to any actual towns or parishes in Hertfordshire that I can find. Hormead? There was certainly a Thomas PEGRAM age 12 b Great Hormead, Herts with his parents James & Hannah PEGRAM all living in Anstey in Herts in 1851. When you look at the writing for Hormead in the 1851 it is easier to convince yourself that the 1871 entry says Hormead as well!!!
