I'm at a complete dead end. Can anyone help. I am looking for Esther Phillips who was the wife and executor of her husband's Rev Maurice/Morris Phillips will when he died in 1822. The will was written in 1816 and her address at this time is Harpenden, HRT. Rev Maurice died at Mill Hill (?) MDX 1822. The will was proved at (looks like Soudon although it is probably London). I am looking for anything on Rev Maurice Phillips born 1767, and/or his wife Esther Phillips who at some stage was living at Harpenden. Perhaps Rev Phillips was a rector of the CoE Church in Harpenden in 1816. His will states his name as Maurice Phillips and in small circle similar to a handwritten copyright mark are the capital letters (LL) or (LS), (LT). Does anyone know what this means? Keeping my fingers crossed. Actually we have a morturary broach of the Rev Maurice Phillips with the inscription on the reverse side. Rev Maurice Phillips, died 1822 age 55 years. The only connection I can make between myself and Rev Maurice is that my great grandmother was Hannah Ada Sylvia Phillips, daughter of John Phillips born 'nr Bristol' 1840s. As the broach has been in the family for more than 100 years, I can only presume/hope that she brought it with her and that she is the granddaughter of Rev Maurice. Long shot, but I would love to solve the riddle of the morturary broach. Thanking you for your interest. Cynthia Foley Dubbo NSW Australia
Hello Cynthia, I had a look at Alumni Oxonienses 1715-1886 but found nothing. I do not have Cambridge. Hi Cynthia, I dont know whether this might help, but at the time in which you are interested, all clergymen attended either Oxford or Cambridge University. The letters after his name are indicative of the degree he read at one of the universities. Both Universities have produced published works of all who attended their institutions and, with luck there is sometimes a "potted" history of the person concerned. I have checked the Alumni for Cambridge and there is no Maurice Phillips, so you need to check Alumni Oxoniensis (sp?). I'm afraid I dont have access to this, but you may find it in a good university or public library, or someone on the list may have access to a copy. Hope this helps Sandra Cynthia Foley wrote: >I'm at a complete dead end. Can anyone help. Perhaps this new website will help track him down: http://www.theclergydatabase.org.uk/ I quote: "The Clergy of the Church of England Database (CCEd) is a collaborative project, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and bringing together scholars from King's College London, the University of Kent at Canterbury and the University of Reading. If he was an Anglican then look at this for places to look for info http://www.lambethpalacelibrary.org/holdings/Guides/clergyman.html Of course he may not have been an Anglican minister which would make it harder still to track him down.. Hi I am searching for Mary Graves born about 1840 in Stanstead. She had a sister Elizabeth born about 1841/1842. I sent for a birth certificate, but I know I have the wrong one. In 1861 Mary had married and was living with her husband in Enfield, Middx, with her younger sister Elizabeth. Having looked on the IGI, I believe that their parents were Benjamin Graves and Mary Hutchins. On the 1861 census I found Benjamin with Ann living Stanstead, but I believe that Benjamin remarried in 1860. Does anyone have access to either 1851/1841 census that could do a look up for me to see if either Mary or Elizabeth are at home with Benjamin during that time. In 1861 he was living in Stanstead Street with his wife Ann. Finally I have found a Mary Graves on the indexes registered in Hitchin. Does this sound about right if she was born in Stanstead? Thanks Denise, Enfield Also researching ADAMS and HOPKINS in Cheshunt
