Hi Kathy, just to add to my earlier mail, you have to bear in mind that the Hitchin you mention is the GRO Registration DISTRICT which covered all of the following towns/villages Baldock, Bygrave, Caldecote, Clothall, Codicote, Graveley, Great Wymondley, Hexton, Hitchin, Holwell (from 1897), Ickleford, Ippollitts, Kimpton, King's Walden, Knebworth, Langley, Letchworth, Lilley, Little Wymondley, Newnham, Norton, Offley, Pirton, Preston, Radwell, St. Paul's Walden, Shephall, Stevenage, Walsworth, Weston, Willian. You cannot say therefore that they died in the town of Hitchin from the GRO indexes - you would need to buy the death certificates to find where they died (& that might not be where they are buried!!), or maybe you already know they were from the town of Hitchin. The good news is that the North Herts District Council covers a large number of these towns/villages, so they may be willing to check other burial grounds in the district if you explain the problem.
