Hi Eunice, I haven't managed to find Mary at all in the 1871 census - I have found her mother and siblings and I have found her future husband Alfred Omant (mistranscribed as AMANT by Ancestry) as follows: PRO Ref: RG10/1368, folio 53, page 4 Schedule 22, Barnards Yard, Back St, Hitchin Alfred OMANT Head Mar 27 Bricklayer Herts Ickleford Mary Ann do Wife Mar 28 do Hitchin Ann do Daur 4 Scholar do do Kate do Daur 2 do do Jane do Cousin Unm 18 Straw Plater do do James HOLT Brother in law Unm 21 Bricklayers Labourer do do Alfred's first wife looks as if she died in the March qtr of 1872 at Hitchin reg district. I have found Mary and family in the 1861 census - let me know if you would like details. Sorry not to have been of more help.
