    3. Hi There has been a lot of talk on the list recently about one name studies, but i was intersted to know if anyone has/is carrying out a one place study or has used inforomation form one? It seems that all my ancestors have originated from one tiny little village, with about 800 drewllings so of course lots of cousins marrying cousins and the same surnames cropping up time and time again... Only problem is, its one of those parishes that has not given permission to have its PRs filmed by the LDS and therefore does not appear on the IGI unless the record has been submitted by a LDS church member. Therefore, I thought it would eb easier to look at the pRs and just write everything down,...i can put all thsi information into a gedcom and then try and work out how I am related to everyone I liked Roberts suggestion of keeping it as a casual thing...but is there a society like GOONS for one place studies?? I wonder if the parish in question might be more amenable now? The LDS has teams photographing/filming old records all over the world - and at the India Office Collection in the British Library constantly (Thank goodness!) It's always worth asking. Re the one place study: I know some people do these, but I haven't come across a society for them as such. I'm a GOON, and I've often wished my lot had stayed put! Regards, Ruth in Brum.

I'm a GOON, and I've often > wished my lot > had stayed put! That's because they're most likely called local historical societies! The one I belong to has been busily researching local residents of all periods and indexing local sources, including the 1841 census, the local parish registers, the tithe awards, various manorial sources, collections of old deeds, records of local industry, the oral history of elder residents, and so on, so if this ain't a one-place study I don't know what is! Furthermore, a fair number of our members are family rather than local historians; in many cases they joined the Hist Soc merely to have a chinwag with other local residents descended from old local families. I moved on to local history from genealogy (or rather, as well as genealogy), when I was faced with a dead-end on one of my trees and started looking through local wills and tax records for genealogical clues, ending up by constructing quite a large and complex picture of the goings-on of a widespread yeoman farming community spread across NE Herts and NW Essex. Still couldn't break the dead-end though - but I am 99% certain that the birth record I need would be in Clavering Congregational chapel's register - if it ever gets found again! Lawrence, Waltham Abbey, Essex (just about).

To pick up pointers and learn how to research a community, try joining the local historical society nearest where you live, even if you have no ancestral ties there; you'll soon pick up on what sources are being researched or indexed and the methods involved, and before long you'll probably be more than ready to tackle the place you're really interested in! Of course, there may well already be a group researching its history. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Ha Haa! Checked by AVG Anti-Virus.
