My father, HARRY HESKINS; son of a HENRY JOSEPH HESKINS was born 23rd Feb 1917. His Mother is a ELSIE OLIVE DAVEY who was a orphan herself and was bought up by the family of Davey's who owned the THREE HORSE SHOES PUB PINGREEN STEVENAGE.She fell pregnant at approx 17yrs old and they threw her out but was taken in by a family with church connections in BASILS RD. My father never knew his real dad cos he was killed in action DEC1916 and my father was born Feb 1917. Elsie went on to marry a HERBERT WILLIAM WITTERING and lived in WALKERN RD. Now here comes the problem ; i cant find my father's birth certificate anywhere having searched all the normal sources, ANY info or advice would be really appreciated. Many thanks Chris

Chris Are you sure the birth was ever registered? I have an illegitimate birth in my family too around 1910 and it appears the birth was never registered either, and this has been backed up by family members who remember the mother telling people she did not register the birth. Society's values were so different then that I guess turning up to register an illegitimate baby could have been an extremely traumatic thing for a young woman.
