My GGGGF, John BATES, is believed to have immigrated to the United States between 1785 and 1795 however we have no further information whatsoever. All the indications we have is that he was born in England about 1769-1773 by using his reported age recorded in various places. The only listing I have been able to located shows a John BATES born to James BATES and Mary Field 1 sep 1771 in Willian, Hertford, England. There are other siblings notable Mary BATES that married Elias EASTWAY (or EASTAWAY) 13 Jun 1793 in Willian, Hertford, England then immigrated to the U.S. but no records, other than U.S. census records, have been located. I am of the opinion that John traveled with his sister and husband, possibly under their name, to either New York or Philidelphia then drifted south to Charleston, SC where he was married then later moved to Griffin, Spalding Co, Ga. Is there any way to determine if John left the Willian area at the same time as Mary and Elias EASTWAY? The only listing I have been able to locate is with the WOOD Family listing on Ancestry.com.
